Getting Organized follows on from the first workshop. Getting Organized is catering to a broader crowd, which includes all undergraduate’s and postgraduate.
Next is a workshop called Communicating. The way people interact here may be quite different to what you’re used to, especially if you come from abroad. We’ll cover an area that many foreign students struggle with — how to talk with teachers and other staff.
The Anxiety workshop is held later on in the year and deals with something you will all be familiar with —— the nerves and anxiety that come when exams are approaching.
Finally, we have the Motivation workshop. The big topic here is how to stay on target and motivated during long-term research projects. This workshop is strictly for research students. Well, that's it, thanks for your time.

Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were working in their New Zealand garden in late August. They were removing unwanted plants when they found something strange. After a little digging, Colin discovered there was a very large potato growing in his garden. And they never planted potatoes!
“We couldn’t believe it, ” Donna said. “It was just huge.” The couple worked the potato out of the soil and brought it to a scale. It weighed almost 8 kilograms.
The potato may be the largest ever recorded. In 2011, a large potato from Great Britain weighed just under 5 kilograms. The New Zealand potato, now named Doug, could break the record. The Craig-Browns asked Guinness (吉尼斯) to recognize their potato as the largest ever. They are waiting to hear from the organization.
The potato has become famous in the town of Hamilton, Colin took Doug on walks round the neighborhood, “We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine,” Colin said. “It’s all a bit of fun.”
Colin said he does not have any special gardening methods to pass on. Normally, he and his wife fertilize (施肥) their garden with waste from cows and dried grasses. The Craig-Browns were growing cucumbers (黃瓜) in that part of the garden, so they didn’t expect there was a potato. It may have been growing for two years or more.
The potato is getting a little old now, two months after it was taken from the ground.
Right now, it is in the freezer.
24. How did the couple feel when they found the potato?
A. Satisfied. B. Surprised. C. Thankful. D. Hopeful.
25. What does “a scale” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A tool. B. A plant. C. An animal. D. A person.
26. Why has the potato become famous?
A. Because it won’t go bad easily.
B. Because it is an unexpected visitor.
C. Because it may be two years old at least.
D. Because it may break the Guinness record.
27. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Two skilful gardeners. B. A potato on Facebook.
C. The possible largest potato. D. A special gardening method.

故選A項。
根據(jù)第三段“The New Zealand potato, now named Doug, could break the record. The Craig-Browns asked Guinness (吉尼斯) to recognize their potato as the largest ever.”(現(xiàn)在被命名為Doug的新西蘭土豆可能會打破紀錄。

Italy has recently been selling hundreds of old homes incredibly cheap, thanks to plans that have led to the rebuilding of local communities.
Scottish businessman Cesidio Di Ciacca bought a whole village. He has just finished renewing Borgo I Ciacca, a rural village dating back to the 1500s and historically named after his family.
“At the turn of the 20th century my grandparents left the village in search of a better future,” Di Ciacca said. “They moved to Scotland, leaving behind their home.” Inspired by nostalgia (懷舊) for his ancestors’ land, Di Ciacca decided to return to breathe new life into the village and rebuild the local economy.
Di Ciacca needed to acquire the entire village to begin repair work. So the first step was to track down all 140 owners of the 30-hectare village property —a long and complicated process made more difficult by the fact that emigration (移民) had spread them across the world.
“It all started off as a hobby. Then I realized I needed to make this dream of mine into a sustainable business,” said Di Ciacca. “When my daughter Sofia decided to leave her corporate job and take care of the vineyards, I turned the village into a rural farm producing honey, jams, wine, and extra virgin olive oil, and launching eco-conscious activities.”
The 2, 500-square-meter village now hosts a small cultural center and conference room for meetings. There’s also a canteen with wine-tasting spots and a kitchen for cooking lessons. Bucolic marathons are held in spring, with people running up and down the vineyards and then relaxing at the little square where villagers once met to chat in the evenings after working in the fields.
“I want this village to be an important center for all Italian-Scottish people abroad who want to return and reconnect with their origins, and maybe even help their native country by launching activities and opportunities for growth,” Di Ciacca said.
28. What drove Di Ciacca to rebuild the village of Borgo I Ciacca?
A. The potential for profit.
B. His grandparents’ wishes.
C. Curiosity about local lands.
D. Love for his ancestors’ origins.
29. Why was it hard to find the village’s original owners?
A. They had moved to different places.
B. Many had passed away years ago.
C. They were unwilling to sell their shares.
D. They had refused to return to the village.
30. What activities can people do in Borgo I Ciacca now?
A. Barbecue in the fields. B. Host agricultural meetings.
C. Feed animals on the farm. D. Pick grapes in the vineyards.
31. What can be inferred from Di Ciacca’s words in the last paragraph?
A. He needs fund for further repair work.
B. He thinks the village is a profitable cause.
C. He wants to help others of Italian origins.
D. He plans to make his village a famous resort.
D 29. A 30. B 31. C
根據(jù)第三段的“Inspired by nostalgia (懷舊) for his ancestors’ land, Di Ciacca decided to return to breathe new life into the village and rebuild the local economy.(出于對祖先故土的懷念,Di Ciacca決定回到村莊,為村莊注入新的活力,重建當?shù)亟洕?”
根據(jù)第四段的“So the first step was to track down all 140 owners of the 30-hectare village property —a long and complicated process made more difficult by the fact that emigration (移民) had spread them across the world.(因此,第一步是追查這處30公頃村莊房產的所有140名所有者——這是一個漫長而復雜的過程,由于移民已將他們分散到世界各地,這一過程變得更加困難。)”
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段的“The 2, 500-square-meter village now hosts a small cultural center and conference room for meetings.(這個2500平方米的村莊現(xiàn)在擁有一個小型文化中心和會議室。)”
根據(jù)最后一段的“I want this village to be an important center for all Italian-Scottish people abroad who want to return and reconnect with their origins, and maybe even help their native country by launching activities and opportunities for growth(我希望這個村莊成為所有海外意大利蘇格蘭人的重要中心,他們希望回國并重新與他們的祖國聯(lián)系起來,甚至可能通過開展活動和發(fā)展機會來幫助他們的祖國。)”

Most of us are familiar with the Sunday scares. Marisa Jo Mayes knew those feelings all too well. Sick of the “instant panic” she felt upon waking up, in 2022, she decided Mondays didn’t have to be so stressful. She started a routine (常規(guī)) of Bare Minimum Mondays, which has become a hit on TikTok. The idea is to focus on just two or three important things on Mondays, while looking after your mental health.
Writing in Insider, Mayes explained she doesn’t do any work for the first two hours on Monday mornings — no meetings, no technology — while instead focusing on starting the day feeling good. When she starts work tasks around 10 a.m., she makes sure they’re creative tasks she enjoys. She does that for about an hour, and then takes a break. After that, it’s time to work, meaning no distractions until she gets her main work tasks done, which usually takes two or three hours.
Mayes said Bare Minimum Mondays has changed her life after experiencing burnout (過度勞累) from her old work routine. “Giving myself actual permission to just do the least amount of work possible that day was extremely relaxing, because I’d got used to believing that my worth is directly tied to my productivity and output,” she said. “So relieving that pressure and choosing to let myself off the hook (擺脫困境) was a much-needed change of mindset going into the beginning of the week, which suddenly allowed me to be productive again.”
David Yadush is a doctor. He said Bare Minimum Mondays could help reduce stress and burnout by giving people time to focus on their mental health. He added that burnout decreases the quality of work, so sometimes reducing how much we work could actually have better results.
Of course, not everyone can do this every Monday. But Yadush said just taking breaks often at work and going to bed early on Sundays could help, too.
32. Why did Mayes start her routine of Bare Minimum Mondays?
A. To make herself feel better. B. To make her work purposeful.
C. To help increase her productivity. D. To keep her work-exercise balance.
33. What can we learn about Mayes’ Bare Minimum Mondays?
A. It’s a waste of time. B. It’s beneficial.
C. It’s suitable for everyone. D. It’s difficult to carry out.
34. What’s David Yadush’s suggestion on reducing burnout on Mondays?
A. Sleeping early on Sundays. B. Asking for leave on Mondays.
C. Doing sports on Mondays. D. Working hard on Sundays.
35. What lesson can we draw from Mayes’ story?
A. Health is the first wealth.
B. Many hands make light work.
C. Working smartly is harder than working hard.
D. You can’t do a good job if your job is all you do.
A 33. B 34. A 35. D

Sometimes we get along. 36 But most of the time, we love our brothers and sisters. And research shows that the sibling (兄弟姐妹) bond is about more than family dinners. They make us happier. For many, that sibling bond means a lifetime of emotional support. That’s why a tight relationship with your siblings can bring happiness later in life. 37 So bonding with our brothers and sisters isn’t only important as we grow and mature, but may also bring major benefits later in life.
Siblings keep us physically fit. 38 Many people believe that friends and family have the largest impact on how healthy our lifestyle is. And staying fit together may help grow that sibling bond. Nearly one-third of people with healthy habits distance themselves from those with less healthy ones.
39 Not only can siblings boost mental health and physical fitness, but strong social ties may help you live longer, according to research published in the journal PLOS Medicine. On average, those with poor social connections died about 7. 5 years earlier than those with solid bonds. This may be because caring about our friends and family inspires us to take better care of ourselves. 40
No matter the reason, keeping that strong connection with our siblings could help us live a longer, happier and healthier life.
A. They could help you live longer.
B. Other times they drive us crazy.
C. Our siblings’ health is often similar to our own.
D. Research shows that older people with living siblings are more positive.
E. Siblings make perfect childhood friends, as they share the same environment.
F. Research shows that our siblings can help us stay active.
G. Or it may be because we turn to loved ones for support when we’re sick or stressed.

分析句子可知,“ (involve) why dogs like wagging their tails or the brain structures of chimpanzees”在句中為定語,修飾名詞topics,名詞topics與動詞involve為主謂關系,所以此處用現(xiàn)在分詞involving,故填involving。
結合空前“l(fā)et workers take action to use firm bricks as foundations to build institute to research animals. ”及空后“ he found the harmful wasted water from construction polluted the roots and shoots of the crops”可知,他讓工人修建研究所,結果卻發(fā)現(xiàn)建筑中有害的廢水污染了農作物的根和芽,這個結果是他沒有料想到的,所以空后內容和前文為轉折關系,however“然而”,表示轉折,故填However。
短語:be bothered to do sth.“不介意做某事”,故填to set。
主語his bike為第三人稱單數(shù),所以空處填has been staying,故填has been staying。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Jim.
I understand quite well what you’re going through. It’s not unusual for us teenagers to have difficulty getting along well with parents.
Take it easy! But remember it’s significant to learn to control your anger. After all, those who easily get irritated are less likely to become a good listener and communicator. Thus, when your parents criticize your weekend arrangements, don’t explode but explain tenderly and patiently. Besides, don’t forget to tell them how much you love them.
Hope you’ll find these suggestions helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua
There was a little boy named Johnson, who lived with his father in their attractive little cottage near a forest. They didn’t have much but were content with the little they had. Every day after he came home from school, Johnson would accompany his father to the forest to collect firewood.
One day, when Johnson was in the forest collecting wood, he came across a puppy (幼犬) which seemed to be all alone. Johnson looked here and there for his owner but in vain. So he picked him up, put him under his shirt and carried him home. Having reached home, he said to his father, “Dad, I found a little puppy alone in the forest! Can we keep him, please?” Feeling Johnson’s happiness, his father couldn’t decide whether to keep the puppy or not at the time. He told him, “Oh, Johnson, that’s the cutest puppy I’ve ever seen! But we don’t have much. What will we do about his food and sleeping arrangement?” Johnson replied, “It’s OK. I’ll give him half of my meals and let him sleep with me in my bedroom.” Hearing this, Johnson’s father just nodded. Johnson was wild with joy, and he named the puppy Rigo.
From that day onwards, Johnson and Rigo became the best friends. Rigo followed Johnson wherever he went. When Johnson went to school, Rigo would patiently wait outside the classroom till the classes ended. At night, Rigo slept next to Johnson on his tiny bed and dreamed sweet dreams.
On one particular day, Rigo was sick, unable to follow Johnson so he stayed at home. That day it rained heavily, and the roads everywhere turned slippery (濕滑的). On his way home, Johnson was trying to reach home as soon as possible as he imagined Rigo waiting for him and keeping him warm. Unfortunately, Johnson missed seeing a hole at the side of the road and fell down the hole! He cried for help, hoping to be heard by passers-by. But due to the loud thundering and noise of the heavy rain, no one heard him.
注意:1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應為150詞左右;
Johnson was trapped in the hole, not knowing whether he could be rescued.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Rigo barked and ran around the hole anxiously.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
?Johnson was trapped in the hole, not knowing whether he could be rescued. It had become very late, and Johnson’s mother was worried at home. She called the neighbors, and they formed a search party to find Johnson. Rigo too, was worried, and so he joined them all. They searched high and low but still couldn’t find Johnson. Rigo used his keen sense of smell and went sniffing everywhere. Then Rigo came closer to the hole.
Rigo barked and ran around the hole anxiously. Rigo’s behavior drew the search party’s attention, and they ran towards the hole. When they looked into it, they found Johnson sitting and shivering in the darkness, wet and cold. Some people comforted Johnson gently while others fetched a rope quickly and dropped it down to Johnson. He held onto one end and then they pulled him up. Everyone cheered, Rigo jumping around happily. Johnson’s mother hugged him tightly. Johnson thanked everyone for helping him and hugged Rigo lovingly for being his best friend and hero.
