Different countries celebrate Christmas in different ways. We asked some of our friends to explain what happens in their countries. This is what they told us:
France
In France, Christmas is always called No?l. Everyone has a Christmas tree, sometimes decorated in the old way with red ribbons and real white wax candles. Fir trees in the garden are often decorated too with lights on all night.
Father Christmas is called Père No?l. The Christmas meal is an important family gathering with good meat and the best wine. Few people send Christmas cards. More people send New Year cards to wish everyone good luck and joy for the New Year. These days Christmas lunch is a starter of foie gras (a strong tasting pate made from goose liver) followed by lunch of seafood—usually including lobsters and oysters.
New Zealand
Christmas starts for us with gifts under the tree, to be opened on Christmas morning. Then it's onto a Christmas lunch either at home or at one's parents place. Turkey or chicken with all the trimmings (佐料) is eaten. Then comes tea time. It is a BBQ for friends and family to get together, and have a few beers or wines with the meal!
Russia
In the days of the Soviet Union, Christmas was not celebrated very much. New Year was the important time—when "Father Frost" brought presents to children. With the fall of Communism, Christmas can be openly celebrated either on December 25th; or more often on January 7th. This unusual date is because the Russian Orthodox church uses the old "Julian" calendar for religious celebration days. Special Christmas food includes cakes, pies and "meat dumplings".
Sweden
The most important day is Christmas Eve. A special Christmas meal is eaten on Christmas Eve—ham (pork), herring fish, and brown beans—and this is the time when families give presents to each other. Many people attend a church meeting early on Christmas Day.
21. Why do people in France send New Year cards?
A. To tell their friends the New Year is coming.
B. To ask for some special presents.
C. To invite their friends to family gathering.
D. To send their friends best wishes and happiness for the New Year.
22. What do they have in common when celebrating Christmas?
A. A special meal is prepared. B. Everyone has a Christmas tree.
C. Parents give gifts to their children. D. People attend a church gathering.
23. Which country celebrates Christmas "twice"?
A. France. B. New Zealand. C. Sweden. D. Russia.
B
One summer day as I was heading to the teaching building, I heard someone call my name. I turned around and saw Philip, a counselor (顧問) at our admissions office, standing with another young man. Philip introduced me to him, Stephen, and reminded me that Stephen would be taking one of my classes.
Stephen looked at me. With a somewhat painful expression, he asked if my class was going to be hard and if he would be able to pass. I introduced all the things that he would be expected to learn. As we talked, I saw Stephen’s eyes getting big with fear.
I told him to do all of his assignments, and to hand them in on time. Rather than being overwhelmed (壓倒) by all of the work, I told him the most successful students made a master calendar of all the assignments so they could plan their workload.
As the fall semester went on, I learned more of Stephen’s story. It had taken him longer to finish the assignments than most young people. Family members, including his mother, kept reminding him that he was a failure. But he kept at it and didn’t take them to heart. He told me that before coming to our college, no one believed he could manage it.
Stephen didn’t become an A student. Still, he managed to pass most of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignments on time and breaking down his studying into bite-sized parts. By passing course after course, he began to gain a measure of self-esteem.
On his graduation day, he walked up to me, and said, “Thank you.”
24.What can we learn about the author according to the passage?
A.He wouldn’t have met Stephen without the introduction of Philip.
B.He told Stephen how to deal with his studies.
C.He helped Stephen get an A in his class.
D.He didn’t believe that Stephen could study in college.
25.What does the passage mainly tell us about Stephen?
A.He was an average student but hard-working.
B.He was an excellent student, but didn’t have self-esteem.
C.He was a little stupid and didn’t do well at school.
D.He was far from a top student because of his failure.
26.What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A.A good beginning is half done. B.One bite at a time.
C.Haste makes waste. D.Look before you leap.
27.According to Stephen’s questions to the author, what do we know about Stephen?
A.He wasn’t very confident about himself. B.He didn’t want to attend the author’s class.
C.He had never been an A student. D.He couldn’t pass the author’s exam.

There are many experiences a Westerner can describe as a “culture shock” in China, one of the fastest-growing economies, like eating mouthwatering baozi for breakfast. These experiences, however, paled in comparison to the one I experienced during my time in an organization I’ve been serving in for two years to provide free educational tours at my leisure — the advancement and equalizing of China’s known wealth disparity (差異) through the social network and cashless payment giant, WeChat, which I rarely used before.
Last month, the organization led a thrilling trip to camp. Initially, we went through a village kept alive by the residents. The views there are so attractive and refreshing. Walking through endless red apple trees, I saw an elderly woman who gently offered to sell me apples. Unfortunately, I informed her I didn’t have cash on hand. She quickly told me to scan the QR code on her phone, which in seconds would get my money into her bank account via WeChat. Needless to say, I was blown away. And of course, the apples were tasty.
As an advocate of financial growth opportunities in under-served communities, it was inspiring to witness that technology lets people contribute to the economy regardless of socioeconomic background in China. Though the socioeconomic problems remain to some extent, access to and adoption of technology creating financial opportunities transforms the lives of everyday citizens and enables communities to flower.
While I once didn’t believe a “cashless society” was possible and thought it could cause more unfavorable conditions, I now stand corrected. Perhaps it might take longer for New York City to adapt, as we lag behind(滯后) in this transformation and there is so much we can learn. I also wonder what the human race can achieve when technology provides endless opportunities for people of all backgrounds to advance.
28. What does the first paragraph tell us about the author?
A. She is struggling with culture shock. B. She does voluntary work when free.
C. She really enjoys Chinese breakfast. D. She likes using social networks.
29. Which of the following surprised the author during the trip?
A. The way of paying. B. Taste of the apples.
C. Popularity of WeChat. D. Scenery of the village.
30. What is the author’s attitude to a cashless society now?
A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Concerned. D. Curious.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Humans will achieve more with technology B. New York will be the next cashless society
C. Technology helps improve everyday life D. China becomes the fastest-growing economy
D
There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier, “Paper or plastic?” Well, which type of bag would you choose?
While both types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are better. They are made from a renewable source, are broken down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true?
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times larger. Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happen to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environment-friendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded. Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered as the more harmful of the two by governments. In Ireland, for example, a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
There’s no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However, we don’t seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do? How should we answer the question of “Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question: “What can I do to help the environment?”
32.Why does the author ask the question at the end of paragraph 1?
A. To express the author’s doubts. B. To tell readers how to save money.
C. To show the kindness of the cashier. D. To introduce the point for discussion.
33.Compared with plastic bags, paper bags ________.
A. need more water to produce B. require less energy to recycle
C. have less influence on forests D. take more time to break down
34.What does the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Shared. B. Discussed. C. Given up. D. Put forward.
35.Which question does the author probably hope the cashier ask?
A. Paper or cloth? B. A new bag or your own one?
C. Paper or plastic? D. A small bag or big one?

“A nursing home would be safer, Dad,” Arlyn told her father, Jim.
“No way,” Jim interrupted. His wife passed away just a year before. At 91, he still wanted to remain in the cottage he and his wife had built.
Jim started experiencing an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Arlyn found his decline was indeed all-consuming. However, she herself was in her late sixties; her house was a 40-minute drive from the cottage. One day, when she read about a new eldercare service called Care. coach, it fueled her interest. For about $200 a month, a computerized avatar (頭像) (controlled remotely by a human caregiver) would watch over a home-bound person 24 hours a day. She signed up immediately.
A week later, a tablet arrived. Following the instructions, Arlyn uploaded dozens of family pictures. Then an animated dog appeared on the screen. She presented the tablet to Jim, pointing to the screen pet, and said excitedly, “Here Dad. You have a new companion.” Jim, doubtful about the dog’s service, knew he had to learn how to get along with the dog before Alzheimer’s took hold.
Within a week, Jim and his dog, whom he named Pony, settled into a routine. Every 15 minutes or so, Pony would look for Jim calling his name if he was out of view. Sometimes Jim would “pet” to awake the sleeping Pony on screen. Pony reminded Jim which caretaker would be visiting to do the tasks: preparing meals, driving him to a senior center, etc. Pony would read poetry aloud or discuss the news. When Pony praised Jim’s sweater, Jim repaid by petting Pony’s screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head. One evening when Arlyn came to visit her father as usual, she was amazed to find that Pony was holding up a photo of her late mum to her dad between its paws.
注意:
1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應為150左右;
Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes. ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.

Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate (偏離) from your plan.”(這意味著每天留出特定的時間來學習,然后盡可能嚴格地遵守這個時間表。 However, try not to go off - track too often or for too long.(但是,盡量不要太頻繁或太長時間偏離軌道。)符合語境,其中go off - track 和上文deviate from your plan對應。故選E項。
37.【C】由前文“Our brain can only focus effectively for so long before we start losing concentration”(我們的大腦只能有效地集中注意力這么長一段時間,然后才會開始失去注意力。)和后文“chances are much higher that you won’t remember all of the information you’re trying to learn.”(你不記得你想學的所有信息的可能性要大得多。) So if you try to study for several hours once(所以如果你試著一次學習幾個小時)符合語境,有承上啟下作用。故選C項。
38.【F】由后文“Some people prefer to study in complete silence, while others find that some background noise helps them focus better. There is no right or wrong answer here-its all about finding a place to study. that allows you to work as efficiently as possible.”(有些人喜歡完全安靜地學習,而另一些人則發(fā)現(xiàn)一些背景噪音有助于他們更好地集中注意力。 Where you study can also affect how effectively you use your time(你在哪里學習也會影響你如何有效地利用時間)符合語境,其中Where 和小標題中place對應,且本句有啟下作用。故選F項。
39.【G】由后文“it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.”(你可以更容易地指導你的學習課程,更好地利用你的時間。) And once you know what specific topics or ideas you need to work on(一旦你知道了你需要研究的具體主題或想法)符合語境,其中specific topics or ideas you need to work on與后文direct your study sessions accordingly對應。故選G項。
40.【B】由后文“If you find that you’re struggling to understand the material or just not making progress as quickly as you’d like, seek assistance in time. There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance. In fact, it can save lots of time in the long run by getting you the support you need early on.”(如果你發(fā)現(xiàn)你很難理解這些材料,或者只是沒有像你想的那樣快速地取得進展,請及時尋求幫助。 Don’t be afraid to ask for help(不要害怕尋求幫助)符合語境,對下文有概括作用,且help與下文也對應。故選B項。

Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes. Memories flashed through Jim’s mind. It had been more than a year since his wife’s death and hardly had he mentioned her anymore. That day, though, he gazed at the photo affectionately and declared emotionally, “I still love her”. Sensing Jim’s sadness, Pony sent hearts to Jim on the screen and comforted him. Uplifted by Pony’s loving remarks, Jim petted Pony’ screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head again. Pony responded with its tail wagging cheerfully. Arlyn sat in silence, with an illusion of slipping back to the old happy days.
Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief. She was amazed at Pony’s heart-warming service and her dad’s fondness for Pony. Pony was more than just a virtual companion; rather, he had become a member of the family, a loyal friend who had helped them through the tough times. With time going by, Arlyn noticed the improvement in her father’s cognitive ability and mood, and he got more engaged in conversations. Arlyn was grateful to Pony. Knowing that Pony was not a substitute for human interaction, she resolved to cherish every moment with her dad, for the presence of loved ones was crucial.
