Every week, two converted blue buses packed with children’s books carefully drive along the streets of Kabul, avoiding areas where deadly explosions are common. These travelling libraries stop off at schools in different parts of the city, delivering a wealth of reading material directly to youngsters who have limited access to books.
“A lot of schools in our city don’t have access to something as basic as a library,” says Freshta Karim, a 27-year-old Oxford University graduate who was inspired to start Charmaghz, a non-profit organization, in her home city having grown up without many books herself. “We were trying to understand what we could do to promote critical thinking in our country.”
While for many people a bus or train journey presents a rare opportunity to get stuck into a book, in some cities public transport is being used as means of getting books to communities that need them most. Afghanistan, for example, has one of the world’s lowest literacy rates, with only three in 10 adults able to read, according to UNESCO. The majority of public schools in Kabul do not have libraries and the city’s libraries do not offer many children’s books. For Karim, buses were a cost-effective, efficient way to get books to children.
Charmarghz rents them from a state-owned bus company. “We go to nearby schools,” she says. “We try to stop inside communities rather than on the main streets where explosions often happen.”
The organization is funded by donations from local business and communities, and also rents a third bus that acts as a mobile cinema. Over 600 children visit the buses each day to read, socialise and play games. “They are often very excited,” she says. “Our biggest challenge is that so many children want to come inside the bus, but we can’t have all of them in one day.”
14. Why does Freshta Karim set up the organization?
A. To raise money for the poor. B. To recycle abandoned buses.
C. To build libraries for the local schools. D. To offer the children more reading opportunities.
15. What is special about Charmarghz?
A. It’s funded by UNESCO. B. It’s a state-owned organization.
C. It buys buses from a company. D. It aims to inspire critical thinking.
16. What is the most pressing problem for Charmarghz?
A. Deadly explosions. B. Poor public transport system.
C. Shortage of travelling libraries. D. Lack of support from the government.
17. Which of the following best describes Freshta Karim?
A. Caring and courageous. B. Humorous and ambitious.
C. Demanding and enthusiastic. D. Honest and hardworking.
D 15. D 16. C 17. A

Napping may be part of life for most of us. However, some countries where daytime naps have long been part of the culture, such as Spain, now discourage the habit. Meanwhile, some companies in the US now promote napping as a way to boost productivity. “It’s important to try to reveal the biological pathways that contribute to the reason why we nap,” says Dashti from Harvard Medical School.
Previously, co-senior author Richa Sexena at Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH) and he colleagues used many databases of genetic and lifestyle information to study other aspects of sleep. To gain a better understanding of the genetics of napping, they performed a genome(基因組)-wide association study (GWAS),which involves rapid scanning of complete sets of DNA of a large number of people.
For this study, the researchers used data from the UK Biobank, which includes genetic information from 452,633 people. All the participants were asked to clássify their naps during the day as “never/rarely”,“sometimes” or “usually”. The GWAS identified 123 regions in the human genome associated with daytime napping. Then the participants wore activity monitors called accelerometers, which can provide data about daytime napping. This data also showed that the self-reports about napping were accurate.
Several other features of this study bolster its results. For example, the researchers obtained similar findings in an analysis of the genomes of 541,333 people collected by 23andMe,a consumer genetic-testing company. Also, a significant number of the genes near or at regions identified by the GWAS are already known to play a role in sleep.
The team also identified at least three potential mechanisms that promote napping. Some people need more shut-eye than others. A daytime nap can help make up for poor-quality sleep the night before. People who rise early may “catch up” on sleep with a nap. “This tells us that daytime napping is biologically driven and not just an environmental or behavioral choice,” says Dshti. Some of these mechanisms are linked to health concerns, such as a large waistline and increased blood pressure, though more research on those associations is needed.
18. What did the researchers at MGH focus on in their new study?
A. The causes of long napping time.
B. The benefits of napping frequently.
C. The reasons behind the napping habit.
D. The genes contributing to poor sleeping quality.
19. Why did the researchers use the activity monitors?
A. To study the database more efficiently.
B. To find the cause of genetic variation.
C. To guarantee the accuracy of the self-reports.
D. To explore how the participants feel after the naps.
20. What does the underlined word “bolster” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Draw attention to.
B. Give support for.
C. Play a decisive role in.
D. Show different opinions on.
21. According to Dashti, what will the researchers study next?
A. The ways to help people sleep better.
B. The causes of and solutions to some health concerns.
C. The impact of environment on people’ s napping choice.
D. The connection between some health problems and the three mechanisms.
C 19. C 20. B 21. D

The American space agency NASA says a spacecraft has entered the sun’s outermost atmosphere for the first time. Scientists announced that Parker Solar Probe traveled through the solar atmosphere’s outer edge, known as the corona (日冕). They described the entry as a successful touch on the sun.
Unlike Earth, the sun does not have a solid surface. Instead, it is a superheated ball of material held together by gravity and magnetic (磁的) forces. The temperature of the corona is so high that the sun’s gravity cannot hold on to it and some solar material escapes from it and goes into space, which causes the solar wind. The solar wind is the flow of charged pieces, known as plasma.
Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 which mainly studied the solar wind. The sun is actually a magnetic variable star with solar activity happening nearly periodically. Scientists said being able to study the solar wind and the corona close up could help them better understand “the way the activity causes changes to the planet we live on”.
“We can actually see the spacecraft flying through the coronal structure during a total solar eclipse (日全食),” Nour Raouafi, the project scientist, said, adding that it took them a few months to examine information from the spacecraft and to confirm the result and that the evidence used included data on magnetic fields and the solar wind, as well as images. Scientists reported Parker Solar Probe successfully went in and out of the corona at least three times.
The Parker team said early data also suggested the spacecraft may have entered the corona during its ninth close approach in August, but a further study is needed to make a confirmation. The spacecraft is expected to keep getting closer to the sun and diving deeper into the corona until its final orbit, planned for 2025.
22. What do we know about the solar wind from the text?
A. It affects the corona’s temperature. B. It functions as the surface of the sun.
C. It is caused by magnetic forces. D. It comes from the sun’s outer atmosphere.
23. Why did NASA launch Parker Solar Probe?
A. To find out why solar activity happens.
B. To know how solar activity influences Earth.
C. To get more evidence of the solar wind.
D. To take measures to control the solar wind.
24. What are the scientists’ attitude to their findings?
A. Confused. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. D. Favorable.
25. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Spacecraft Touches the Sun for the First Time
B. Parker Uncovers the Secrets of the Solar Wind
C. NASA Brought New Discoveries about the Sun
D. Parker Is Designed to Reach the Sun in 2025
D 23. B 24. C 25. A

Scientists said being able to study the solar wind and the corona close up could help them better understand “the way the activity causes changes to the planet we live on”(帕克太陽探測器于2018年發(fā)射,主要研究太陽風(fēng)。
根據(jù)第四段的“it took them a few months to examine information from the spacecraft and to confirm the result and that the evidence used included data on magnetic fields and the solar wind, as well as images(他們花了幾個月的時間來檢查來自航天器的信息,并確認(rèn)結(jié)果,所用的證據(jù)包括磁場和太陽風(fēng)的數(shù)據(jù),以及圖像)”和第五段的“but a further study is needed to make a confirmation(但還需要進(jìn)一步的研究來證實(shí))”可知,科學(xué)家們花費(fèi)數(shù)月時間檢查來自航天器的信息并確認(rèn)結(jié)果,并且認(rèn)為需要開展新研究以確認(rèn)“帕克太陽探測器”在8月份是否進(jìn)入日冕。
通讀全文尤其是根據(jù)第一段“The American space agency NASA says a spacecraft has entered the sun’s outermost atmosphere for the first time. Scientists announced that Parker Solar Probe traveled through the solar atmosphere’s outer edge, known as the corona (日冕). They described the entry as a successful touch on the sun.(美國宇航局稱一艘宇宙飛船首次進(jìn)入太陽最外層大氣層。科學(xué)家們宣布,帕克太陽探測器穿過了太陽大氣的外緣,也就是日冕。他們稱這次進(jìn)入是一次成功的太陽之旅。)”可知,本文主要介紹了美國國家航空航天局的“帕克太陽探測器”首次近距離接近太陽,故A項(xiàng)“Spacecraft Touches the Sun for the First Time(宇宙飛船首次接觸太陽)”作標(biāo)題最佳。故選A。

根據(jù)第二段的首句“One of the most popular reasons for working out following an online video is that it offers ultimate convenience. (跟著在線視頻健身最流行的原因之一是它提供了極大的便利。)”可知,本段主要介紹了在線健身的優(yōu)勢之一是其便捷性。同時根據(jù)空前“No need to roll out of bed at 5 a. m. to attend that 6 a. m. boot camp class, which may end up being full when you arrive.(沒有必要在早上5點(diǎn)從床上爬起來去參加早上6點(diǎn)的訓(xùn)練營課程,當(dāng)你到達(dá)時,訓(xùn)練營可能會爆滿。)” E項(xiàng)“Instead, you can turn it on at home at your convenience.(相反,你可以在你方便時在家里打開課程。)”
根據(jù)空后“Most online fitness programs are much less expensive than similar offline programs—most range in cost from $ 10 to $ 20 per month. Some are even free.(大多數(shù)在線健身項(xiàng)目都比類似的線下項(xiàng)目便宜得多,每個月的費(fèi)用從10美元到20美元不等。有些甚至免費(fèi)。)”可知,本段談?wù)摰氖窃诰€健身在價格方面的優(yōu)勢。A項(xiàng)“Another is the price.(另一個是價格)”能夠概括段落的主要內(nèi)容,同時A項(xiàng)中的“Another”與第二段首句中的“One”的呼應(yīng)關(guān)系亦是提示。故選A。
根據(jù)第四段的首句“Online training also has broad offerings. (在線培訓(xùn)的內(nèi)容也很廣泛。)”可知,本段主要介紹的是在線健身可以提供多樣的選擇。同時根據(jù)空前“When you head online, you have instructors from around the globe, all ready and willing to help you master your favorite moves.(當(dāng)你上網(wǎng)時,你有來自世界各地的教練,他們都準(zhǔn)備好了,愿意幫助你掌握你最喜歡的動作。)”可知,網(wǎng)絡(luò)上有來自全世界的教練已經(jīng)準(zhǔn)備好并愿意幫助你掌握你最喜歡的動作,空后“Just because there isn’t a Krav Maga class in your area doesn’t mean you can’t go online to find one led by qualified instructors.(僅僅因?yàn)槟闼诘牡貐^(qū)沒有Krav Maga課程并不意味著你不能在網(wǎng)上找到一個由合格的講師帶領(lǐng)的課程)”提到你所在的地區(qū)沒有Krav Maga課程并不意味著你不能在網(wǎng)上找到一個。綜上可知,空處應(yīng)是在講在網(wǎng)上能不受限制地開展多種多樣的健身活動,故C項(xiàng)“The same goes for different types of exercise.(不同類型的運(yùn)動也是如此。)”
根據(jù)第一段最后一句“If you’re considering joining the online fitness community, consider these benefits and drawbacks.(如果你正在考慮加入在線健身社區(qū),考慮一下這些好處和缺點(diǎn)。)” 上文內(nèi)容介紹的是優(yōu)勢,最后一段“Very few online fitness programs enable the instructor to see you, check your form, and offer corrections based on your performance.(很少有在線健身項(xiàng)目能讓教練看到你,檢查你的狀態(tài),并根據(jù)你的表現(xiàn)給出糾正。)” 因此空處應(yīng)填一個承上啟下的句子,引出在線健身的不足,故B項(xiàng)“But it’s not without problems.(但是,它也不是沒有問題)”符合語境。故選B。
根據(jù)空前“Very few online fitness programs enable the instructor to see you, check your form, and offer corrections based on your performance.(很少有在線健身項(xiàng)目能讓教練看到你,檢查你的狀態(tài),并根據(jù)你的表現(xiàn)給出糾正。)”和空后“This is particularly concerning for beginners, as they’re more likely to do incorrectly. (這對初學(xué)者來說尤其重要,因?yàn)樗麄兏赡茏龅貌徽_。)”可知,空處應(yīng)是在線健身項(xiàng)目缺乏面對面指導(dǎo)的結(jié)果。G項(xiàng)“This means you could perform exercises wrongly, or even unsafely, without knowing it.(這意味著你可能在不知情的情況下錯誤地、甚至不安全地進(jìn)行鍛煉。)”

Aminah always studied hard, so there was nothing unusual about her receiving top marks at the end of the year. But Farhan was often playing with the village boys when he should have been studying. To help motivate him this year, their father had promised to buy him a bicycle if his grades improved.
Aminah was sure that even this generous offer wouldn’t change her brother’s habits. But when Farhan started staying home and studying, everyone was surprised.
At the end of the school year, Aminah received top marks as she always did. And, as usual, her parents gave her 100 rupees (盧比) as a reward.
For the first time, Farhan got top marks too. True to his word, their father came home with a bicycle. It was well used, and much of the paint had been chipped (脫落) off. But to Farhan, it was the most beautiful bicycle in their country. Farhan’s friends cheered when they saw it. It was understood that something as precious as a bicycle would be shared with everyone.
Well, almost everyone.
After a few days of watching Farhan and the village boys learning to ride, Aminah and her friends grew bitter. They spent afternoons on the hill just north of the village, sitting in the shade of a mango tree and watching the lazy stream flow at the foot of the hill. They could hear the boys cheering and laughing on the other side of the hill.
“Why doesn’t he let us ride, Aminah?” asked Fatima. Aminah shrugged (聳肩), trying to act as if she didn’t care.
“He and the other boys just want the bicycle all for themselves!” replied Shehnaz. Sarah shook her head. “But Aminah is his sister! He should share with her.” An older sister commanded respect.
As they talked, the boys’ screams grew closer. Aminah looked up and saw her brother on his bicycle at the top of the hill. “Look! I can do it!” Farhan yelled at the top of his lungs. He had finally gotten the hang of it. The boys cheered as he began to speed up.

One possible version:
Suddenly, Farhan lost control of the bicycle, heading in the direction of the girls, toward the stream. “Help! Help! I can’t control its speed,” Farhan cried at the top of his voice. So nervous and frightened was Farhan that he had no idea how to stop the bicycle. Seeing the bike running at breakneck speed toward them, all the girls but Aminah shouted with fright and then ran away to avoid being hit. However, it was at the very moment that Aminah stood in the middle of the road, trying to pull the bike to slow down with all her strength. Finally, the bike stopped with no one being hurt.
Farhan looked at Aminah, then at his bicycle, then back at his sister. He scratched his head, asking, “Aren’t you afraid of being hit?” “I could run away, but you’re my brother. I can’t leave you in danger,” Aminah replied in a determined voice. Hearing the words, he felt a sense of warmth welling up inside his body with tears of gratitude streaming down his cheeks. It hit him that he didn’t share his joy of getting the bike with his sister, let alone invite her to have a ride. Ashamed and guilty, he looked sincerely at his sister, “Would you like to have a try? I can teach you how to ride.” “Sure!”, Aminah agreed with delight. All boys and girls present cheered and laughed. After that, Farhan shared everything he had with his sister.
