Which one do you like most? Why?What do you know about these paintings? One way to understand Western art is to look at the history of its painting. In the Middle Ages, Western art aimed to teach Christianity, so it was two-dimensional and unrealistic. This changed with the emotional paintings of Giotto di Bondone. Renaissance painting became less religious as people wanted paintings that were beautiful, interesting, and accurate. At this time ideas on perspective by Masaccio were adopted by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, producing some of Europe's greatest paintings. The use of oil paints reached its height with Rembrandt, a master of shadow and light. Photography in the mid-19th century meant accuracy was no longer needed. So, named after a painting by Claude Monet, Impressionism focused on light and movement in nature or daily life, while Renoir used such techniques to show people's humanity. Modern Art saw the Cubism of Picasso and other artists' abstract creations seemingly ask, “What is art?”
