Once I spoke at a high school. After the speech, I was asked to see a special student. An illness had kept the boy
Home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed. He was Matthew. When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal weight lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles(障礙)and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain(抱怨). He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. He knew what he was talking about. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.
When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion(冠軍). You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I got the news that Matthew had died and a letter Matthew had written me a few days before:
Dear Rick,
My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. The doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more. But I still smile as much as I can.
I told you some day I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I’ll never make it. But I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you.
Thank you for loving me.

The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My granddad told me to just put my feet on the pedals and start pedaling(騎自行車).He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn’t.
As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from pedaling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes(車閘)and fell right off the bike. My granddad kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.
As soon as I started pedaling again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. Since that happened, my granddad decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up bright and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn’t that afraid of falling anymore.
Though I knew there were a lot of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my granddad’s help. After all, riding a bike was what I wanted to do eagerly.

Water is the driving force of all nature, Leonardo da Vinci claimed. Unfortunately for our planet, water supplies are now running dry at an alarming rate. The world’s population continues to increase but that rise in number has not been matched by adequate supplies of fresh water. Reports show that more than a billion individuals-one in seven people on the planet-now lack access to safe drinking water.
In Sao Paulo, a Brazilian city, drought got so bad that residents began drilling through basement floors and car parks to try to reach groundwater. Officials in this city warned that rationing (配給制) of water supplies was likely soon. Citizens in Sao Paulo might have access to water for only two days a week. In California, US, officials have shown that the state has entered its fourth year of drought. At the same time, its per capita (人均) water use has continued to rise.

Dear Zhang Wei,
You have told me that you are very nervous about the coming speech contest and I will try to make some suggestions which I hope can help you.
In my opinion, you should get well prepared before the speech contest by practising before a mirror. Besides, you had better use a brief and concise language in your speech so that you can leave a deep impression on the judges. In addition, when you are giving the speech, remember to keep smiling and even if you forget your words, don’t be panic and just continue your speech, because no one will notice it.
Wish you success in the speech.
Yours,
John
第二節(jié)
【答案】One possible version:
Fresh water is now in short supply worldwide. Sao Paulo and California are two typical examples, and both of them have got into trouble for not having enough fresh water.
Quite many things give rise to the shortage of fresh water. Firstly, more and more fresh water is needed with the growth of global population. Secondly, drought has been affecting some cities in the world and thus these cities have been lacking in fresh water. Above all, millions of tons of fresh water is polluted every day due to the industrial and domestic waste.
To deal with the problem, the government should take stricter measures to forbid factories from pouring waste into the clean river. As a citizen, we should learn to recycle and reuse the fresh water. Only if we take steps to save every drop of fresh water can we avoid a severe worldwide water shortage in future.
