In 2019 my kid started school, but I learned more lessons than she did. I'd heard prep (學(xué)前班) was a big thing so we needed to take things easy. The advice was for her but it could have been for me too.
So I didn't ask my kid to do dancing lessons, and I turned down a big work project. The idea of turning down work has always made me worried. If I'm honest, this probably has less to do with the lost money and more to do with the fear that I might enjoy the time off too much. I mean, how do I know who I am if I'm not working?
Turns out my kid didn't miss the dancing lessons one bit. And every day of Term One I felt happy that I got to walk home from school with her instead of racing somewhere else every night.
In the first few weeks my daughter was so worn out after school that she would fall asleep during dinner. As I put her into bed and explained how good it was to rest, after a few weeks, I felt that rest made me feel better too. Perhaps there had been a connection between busy work and my neck pains.
Prep students are expected to begin learning how to read and it's hard work. It took us several months to move onto harder books, and over and over we saw the rewards (?獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)) of sitting in that uncomfortable place until you broke through. We don't do that much, as adults (成年人), but it's good for us. I started doing yoga (瑜伽) again, after a long break, and let myself enjoy the feeling of being the worst in the class.
I learned a lot in a year, even more than my kid. I learned that it's OK to work less, rest more, and do things I'm not good at yet.
24. What worried the author most about turning down the work project?
A. She might lose herself.
B. She would have no money.
C. She couldn't enjoy the time off.
D. She might not help her kid at all.
25. What was the author's kid like at the beginning of Term One?
A. She missed dancing a lot.
B. She didn't like her dinner.
C. She found it hard to fall asleep.
D. She was very tired after school.
26. How did the author's yoga lessons go?
A. She found pleasure in them.
B. She was unwilling to do them.
C. She was too busy to finish them.
D. She had never attended them before.
27. What did the author learn from reading with her kid?
A. It's all right to do things you're not skillful at.
B. You can't have your cake and eat it.
C. We all want to be happy.
D. Everyone is different.
C?
When I told my parents I was quitting (?辭去) my job, my parents objected strongly. They said something to me, “You won't have any money, NO!” “Setting up a business is very risky, you shouldn't do it!” and “Your job is so good with great pay, why do you want to quit?”
Their comments didn't stop me since I had already made up my mind. I told them that I knew what I was doing. At the same time, I understood their concerns (?擔(dān)憂(yōu)), which I had already put into my business plan.
After 9 months or so, my parents stopped discouraging me. After my first or second year, they actually understood that I was doing this for life. It's been 10 years, and for the past 8 years, they never asked me to do anything different. In my family, when you don't get strong discouragement, that means acceptance. Similarly, when I told them about my plan to travel around the world, to try a different diet (?飲食), among other plans, they would completely disagree at first. But after I pushed forward and moved forward with my goals (?目標(biāo)) for a while, they would come to accept them.
At the end of the day, remember that your parents love you. If they don't care about you, they wouldn't be against what you do at the risk of influencing your relationship with them. So don't hate them. Use their objection as a positive force. It will take time for them to change their mind, but when they see your determination (?決心) and see you succeeding, and feeling happy and fulfilled doing so, they will realize that you are no longer a little boy / girl who requires their worry and control. That's when they start to be more hands-off and give you the space to grow and come into your own.
28. What did the author decide to do after giving up his job 10 years ago?
A. Go on a diet.
B. Start his own business.
C. Travel around the world alone.
D. Improve his relationship with his parents.
29. How does the author get his parents' acceptance when doing something different?
A. By sticking to his goals.
B. By turning to someone else.
C. By showing more respect for them.
D. By having more communication with them.
30. What advice does the author offer in the last paragraph?
A. Change jobs from time to time.
B. Live a happy and successful life.
C. Find the space to improve yourselves.
D. Think about parents' opinions positively.
31. What does the text focus on?
A. Whether to give up your job when you don't like it.
B. What to do when your parents don't support you.
C. How to communicate with your parents properly.
D. Whether to change your goals now and then.
D?
For many years, scientists and animal lovers have worked to make the world safer for endangered species (?瀕危物種). Now, there is something that needs protection from these protected animals?—?a famous French cheese called Roquefort, known as the?“King of Cheeses”.
Roquefort is made from sheep's milk in the southern part of the French mountains. Farmers have been making Roquefort for thousands of years, and they follow many rules when making it, to be sure that it is done in the traditional way. One of the rules is that they must let their sheep live freely in the mountains.
However, following these rules has become very dangerous. Wolves have moved into the area, and they have killed 62 sheep. The wolves are an endangered species, and have not been seen in the French mountains since the 1920s. No one is allowed to kill the wolves, but the farmers are now saying it is impossible for their sheep to live in the same mountains as the wolves. Farmers have dogs to protect the sheep and have also built electric fences (電柵欄), but they say they will not have enough money to continue making Roquefort once they have spent it all on keeping their sheep safe. Many people have said that wolves that attack (?襲擊) sheep should be killed, since they have become a threat to the farmers' jobs. Others think that anyone who wants the wolves killed is trying to make them become extinct (滅絕的).
Maybe it would not be a problem if Roquefort became extinct instead, and the wolves were able to live in the mountains. But then the farmers would not have jobs. Will the people of?Southern France?be able to find a way that protects both the wolves and the King of Cheeses? Let's wait and see.
32. What can we learn about Roquefort?
A. It is produced in many places in?France.
B. It has been made in modern ways.
C. It has a long history.
D. It is easy to make.
33. What problem do the sheep face?
A. They have been endangered since the 1920s.
B. They are in danger of being attacked.
C. They are too expensive to feed.
D. They are killed by people.
34. What may happen if farmers fight with the wolves?
A. They can't afford to make the cheese.
B. They have no time to make the cheese.
C. They have no idea how to sell the cheese.
D. They can't produce the cheese with high quality.
35. What do people think of the wolves?
A. They agree with killing the wolves.
B. They support leaving the wolves as they are.

閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開(kāi)頭語(yǔ)續(xù)寫(xiě)兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
It was a cold night, and there was ice in Dad's beard when he came back in. “Come on,?Elizabeth,” he said. “Put on your coat. It's cold out.”
I was sad. Not only wasn't I getting the dress I wanted because there was not enough money; now Dad was dragging (?硬拽) me out into the cold.
Outside, I became even sadder. There, in front of the woodshed (柴棚), was our truck.
“Dad, what are we doing?” I asked.
“We need to load (裝載) wood onto the truck,” Dad said.
I unwillingly started loading wood — the wood we'd spent all summer cutting into blocks.
“Have you been by Mrs. Clark's lately?” he asked.
Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her with three children to raise on her own.
“Yeah,” I said. “Why?”
“I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile, trying to find a few chips. They're out of wood,?Elizabeth.”
That was all he said, and we loaded the truck high with wood. Dad then went to the smokehouse and took down some meat, telling me to go load it. He returned to the truck carrying a bag of flour (面粉) over his right shoulder and a smaller bag of something in his left hand. “What's in the little bag?” I asked.
“Shoes. They're out of shoes. I got the children a little candy too.”
Then Dad explained that he and Mom had saved enough money to buy me a dress. Yesterday, when he saw little Jake, Dad knew what he had to do. “I spent that money on some shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand,” he said.
We rode the two miles to the?Clarks' place in silence. I tried to think about what Dad was doing. We did have a big woodpile, meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn't have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer neighbors than us. Why was it our business?

寫(xiě)作
第一節(jié)
One possible version:
Dear Ellen,
I'm so sorry to hear that you haven't been getting along with your parents very well recently.
Sometimes parents don't agree with us on some issues. But no matter what conflicts you have with them, please remember they love you. What you should do is tell them that becoming a member of the cheerleading team will not only make you relax, which in turn can help you study more efficiently, but also give you a chance to make more friends. So I believe your parents will finally support you.
I'm looking forward to your reply.????
Yours,
Li Hua
第二節(jié)
One possible version:
We unloaded the wood behind the?Clark?house and knocked on the door.?Mrs. Clark opened the door. The three children were sitting in front of a small fire in the fireplace. “We brought you a few things,” Dad said, and set the bag of flour and meat on the table. He handed her the other bag. She opened it and took out the shoes. She was so moved that she was almost crying. “We brought a load of wood, too,” Dad said. He turned to me and said, “Elizabeth, go bring in some wood. Let's get that fire burning.”
Soon the fire was burning, and everyone's spirits rose.?The children smiled when Dad handed them each a piece of candy, and Mrs. Clark looked on with a smile that probably hadn't crossed her face in a long time. I could see that the children missed their dad, and I was glad that I still had mine. I could also understand very well. My father had given me a gift greater than a dress. He gave me the look on Mrs. Clark's face and the smiles of her three children.

54. B。 下文中的I was surprised myself是提示。
55. A。由上文的描述及文章末句Today, one would never guess I hadn't grown up with hockey可知,“我”后來(lái)竟然愛(ài)上了曲棍球這項(xiàng)運(yùn)動(dòng)。此處表示我們“一直繼續(xù)(continued)”去看曲棍球比賽。
