I had mixed feelings today, nervous, worried, happy, excited… My heart went down when Miss Chan, our head teacher, said that Matthew and Beth, two students from England, would spend three months with us! I was worried that I had to speak English so much! But at the end of the school day, I was happier than I thought: the morning with them today was more enjoyable than I expected.
Today is the most unforgettable first day I have had! Matthew is fantastic! His English is clearer and easier to listen to than I thought. The other English student, Beth, is the most helpful girl I’ve ever met. There were lots of things to do on the first day. Beth offered to help Miss Chan put up all the notices. Of course, some of the credit (功勞) should also go to me because I translated some of the notices for her. Miss Chan praised us!
We finished all the preparations 10 minutes earlier than expected, then Beth and I talked for a while, Matthew sang several English songs and did some stand-up comedy (單人喜劇表演) at the party. We all praised him. When the bell rang to end the first school day, none of us wanted to leave.
When I went back home, I had a little headache. I have probably spoken more English today than the whole of last year.
It was really a happy day! I hope our friendship can continue, even after they go back to England!

(2022·全國·高一單元測試)It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad for the vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going back to school.
Most teachers start the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class.
When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention so you'll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.
You might have already known a lot of people in your class on the first day. But it's a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends!
Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they'll have mapped out a seating plan. It's a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don't forget.
Here are a few final tips for a fantastic (奇異的) first day: Get enough sleep. Have a healthy breakfast. Try your best. (2022·廣東·深圳市寶安第一外國語學(xué)校高一期中)For Canaan Elementary’s second grade in Patchogue, N. Y., today is speech day, and right now it’s Chris Palaez’s turn. The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With shining dark eyes, he seems like the kind of kid who would enjoy public speaking.
But he’s nervous. “I’m here to tell you today why you should ... should ...” Chris trips on the “-ld,” pronunciation difficulty for many non-native English speakers. His teacher, Thomas Whaley, is next to him, whispering support. “... Vote for ... me ...” Except for some stumbles, Chris is doing amazingly well. When he brings his speech to a nice conclusion, Whaley invites the rest of the class to praise him.
A son of immigrants, Chris started learning English a little over three years ago. Whaley recalls how at the beginning of the year, when called upon to read, Chris would excuse himself to go to the bathroom.
Learning English as a second language can be a painful experience. What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes. “It takes a lot for any student,” Whaley explains, “especially for a student who is learning English as their new language, to feel confident enough to say, ‘I don’t know, but I want to know.’ ”
Whaley got the idea of this second-grade presidential campaign project when he asked the children one day to raise their hands if they thought they could never be a president. The answer broke his heart. Whaley says the project is about more than just learning to read and speak in public. He wants these kids to learn to boast (夸耀)about themselves.

(2022·江蘇·錫東高中高一期末)He looked like a pirate.
With his handkerchief tied in a knot behind his little nine-year-old head, he looked like a pirate, a sad pirate. The first time little David came to our camp, he was hairless and worn out from medical treatments. He was also very angry.
Paul Newman’s camp counselors (指導(dǎo)老師) were hoping to fill David’s days with fun and laughter. But David stayed inside himself, wanting to be alone, or in a comer of the cabin. At this camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, we had seen some pretty tough children worn out by cancer recover full of energy despite their illness. But we saw little progress in David no matter what we tried with him. Five days into the eight-day session saw a quiet, sad little pirate.
Then something happened on that fifth night. Something at camp that we would call “huge”. It was cabin night. That’s the time when campers and counselors spend time together in each individual cabin instead of an all-camp activity. Campers love cabin nights because there’s always a bedtime snack. On the cabin table that night were bags of potato chips.
David slowly walked over to the table, leaving his comer to join the rest of us. He took one of the bags of the potato chips and started smashing (弄碎) it with his little fists, as all the other campers looked on in disbelief, I wondered what the cabin counselor would do.
The college-age volunteer counselor positioned a bag of chips on the table in front of himself, and he, too, started smashing it with his fist. The campers went crazy as everyone ran to the table to get in on the fun of smashing potato chips with their fists.
Somehow everyone knew, everyone sensed, that anger within him was now being released.
For the last couple days of the session, David was a different kid. He was a little nine-year-old boy again, trying to fill the hours of each remaining day at camp with as much fun as could be possible.
Several days after the session, David came back again, This time, there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t try to fit in to his day. He sure was having a great time at camp. David asked me if I needed an altar (祭壇) boy when I celebrated Mass in the woods. Sure enough, he was my altar boy.I remembered how carefully he listened to me when I talked about death. I said it’s only a doorway. You walk through the door and there’s the Lord God and behind God a whole line of people waiting to hug you.
After Mass, he said to me, “Hey Fatha, a door, huh?”
A couple more days of fun passed and tonight was the talent show. The tradition is that campers and counselors dress up in costumes, and everyone gets a standing applause for singing and dancing or simply just acting like fools on stage.
The show had begun: lights, camera, action.
Unfortunately, the only action taking place in our row of seats was little David making his way from counselor to counselor to say an early good-bye to camp. He had become quite ill and had to go to the hospital because of this new crisis.
When this little nine-year-old pirate stood in front of me, he gave me a hug and a big wet kiss on my cheek. I was crying. He was crying. A whole row of counselors was in tears. After the hug and kiss, he put his hands on my shoulders, and tears still in his eyes, said: “See you on the other side of the door, Fatha.”

(2022·甘肅·永昌縣第一高級中學(xué)高一期中)My life was totally changed because a simple three-word phrase was delivered at the right time in just the right way.
When I was three years old, my parents discovered I was totally deaf, a situation which forced them to make an important decision about my education.
After talking with doctors, they made a decision that would forever change my future. Instead of sending me to a private school for the deaf, they decided to give me a normal education. All of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing.
I experienced great anxiety throughout elementary school. In addition to the problems of "fitting in" with the other students, I also struggled with most of my schoolwork. Since fitting in was so important to me, every time people around me laughed or smiled, I did the same, even though I usually had no idea what was going on.
Mrs. Jordan, my 5th grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase. One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips and immediately raised my hand. I couldn't believe it—for the first time I knew the answer. But when she called on me to give the answer, I was afraid. Here was an opportunity to impress the teacher and show her I was worthy of her love. Maybe, it could even impress my classmates a little.
Despite my fears, I felt confident because I was sure I had the right answer. I took a deep breath and answered Mrs. Jordan's question.
I will never forget what happened next. With sparking eyes and a wide smile, she cried, “That's right, Stephen!”
My heart burst with pride as an ear-to-ear grin filled my face. My confidence went up like never before. I decided at that time that I would make a place for myself in this world. A simple three-word phrase delivered with unbelievable enthusiasm totally changed my young life.

(2022·吉林市教育學(xué)院高一期末)Welcome to senior high. Your great adventure is about to begin. It is a time when you can challenge yourself to improve. Some senior high students are invited to share their secrets and advice.
Wang Zanduo, 17, Hebei
One of the most important things for seniors is to learn to get along with others. We all know nobody is perfect. Getting along with others takes patience and understanding. You should always respect others’ differences and make new friends with people sharing common interests. It’s also a time to learn to keep your temper (脾氣) under control. A hot temper cannot solve any problems, but patience can.
Sun Xiuyuan, 16, Shandong
To enjoy your high school life, I would say that you don’t want to stress yourself out. Senior years provide you with more chances to explore who you are and what you want to do in the future. I really enjoy doing extracurricular activities and community service. My experiences of joining a singing club and a computer programming club, as well as volunteering, have encouraged me to search for the unknown and find more fun and warmth in the world. Try things you are not familiar with, and remember, no matter what your talents are, you can always go beyond yourself.
Zhao Yuebei, 18, Hainan
It’s true that senior year means a lot more work. Don’t worry! A very useful study method is the mind map to help organize information. Creating your own system of knowledge is important. It plays a key role especially in the review stage of the final year. You can start by writing down a key concept (概念) in the center of a page, then add related points and ideas around it. I have benefited a lot from this method since it pushes me to review and organize all my knowledge.
28.According to Wang Zanduo, how can you get along well with others?
A.Making efforts to become perfect.
B.Being patient and understanding.
C.Trying to be different from others.
D.Developing the same interest as others.
