M: Nice.
W: Besides, I could buy all the things without risk because customers pay in advance. The greatest advantage, though, is by having ten customers at most, I don’t need to hire a waiter.
M: Do you ever run into problems?
W: Yes, I did one meal on a beach and the wind blew sand into people’s food. Fortunately, I’d brought a large umbrella to protect myself from the sun, so I put it around their table instead!

Ever since I graduated from high school I've worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why I'm so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear over might. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts (輪班) in a factory, the other optionshave become only too clear. " This job pays well, but it's hell on the body, " said one co-worker. " Study hard and keep reading. " she added. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陳腐的) now ring true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.
24. What does the author think of his summer holiday?
A. It was no holiday for him at all.
B. It brought him nothing but suffering.
C. It was a relief from his hard work at school.
D. It offered him a chance to make more friends.
25. What can we infer about most college students?
A. They do better in the real world.
B. They are confident when they work.
C. They think too highly of themselves.
D. They are expert at handling machines.
26. What is the biggest pressure for blue-collar workers?
A. A low income B. The lack of security
C. An unstable location D. Less break
27. How did the working experiences change the author?
A. He became responsible for his work.
B. He learned to be more practical at work.
C. He began to respect blue-collar workers.
D. He came to appreciate his college education.

According to a study published in the journal Science on Friday, Chinese scientists used carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and electricity to create starch (淀粉), a type of complex carbohydrate (碳水化合物) found in plants. This new method allows the production of starch from carbon dioxide with an efficiency 8.5 times higher than the biosynthesis (生物合成) of starch in corn.
Experts believe that if this technique can be scaled up to the level of industrialization, it could revolutionize how this key nutrient and industrial ingredient is produced because it does not require farming and processing large quantities of starchy crops like sweet potato and corn, saving more water, fertilizer, and farming land.
It could also be used to convert carbon dioxide, a common industrial waste and greenhouse gas, into a consumable product. This will aid in reducing carbon emissions and preventing climate change, especially if the electricity used is generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind.
It may provide a sustainable food source for astronauts as they travel long distances in space and attempt to colonize other planets where growing food is impractical. Future space travelers may simply convert the carbon dioxide they expel into food.
According to Ma Yanhe, director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, starch and other complex carbs account for 60 to 80 percent of the human diet.
“Our breakthrough demonstrates that synthesizing (合成) complex compound like starch is achievable in a lab, and there are many industries that can benefit from this technology.” he said.
28. Which is not a potential benefit if the technique can be used on an industrial level?
A. It will have a positive influence on climate change
B. It will generate renewable resources such as solar and wind
C. It will offer a practical food solution for astronauts
D. It will help save several sources from water to farming land
29. The underlined word in paragraph 3 can be best replaced by ________
A. transform B. transfer
C. build D. make
30. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Starch , an important complex carbohydrate
B. The great benefits of starch
C. Chinese scientists successfully turn carbon dioxide into starch
D. Chinese scientists make contributions to climate change
31. What does the following paragraph will talk about ?
A. The process of synthesizing(合成) starch in a lab
B. Industries that can take good advantage of this technology
C. The biosynthesis(生物合成) of starch in corn

British sculptor Jason Taylor has made it his mission to use his talent to conserve our ecosystems by creating underwater museums. Over the years, the environmentalist has put over 850 massive artworks underwater worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor launched his latest work---The Underwater Museum of Cannes.
“The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,” Taylor told Dezeen. “Ocean ecologies have been destroyed by human activity in the Mediterranean over the past few decades, and it is not obvious what is taking place when observing the sea from afar.”
The Underwater Museum of Cannes contains 6 sculptures featuring local residents of various ages. They range from Maurice, an 80-year-old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9-year-old student. Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.
Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. Besides removing the trash, Taylor also restored the area’s seagrass. Just one square meter of the seagrass can generate up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. The seagrass also helps prevent coastal erosion and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.
“The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense of care and protection,” Taylor told Dezeen. “If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.”
32. why does Jason Taylor create underwater museums ?
A. To protect the artworks underwater
B. To draw attention to endangered sea animals.
C. To show his sculpture talent.
D. To raise awareness of protecting the ocean.
33. Why does the outer part of the sculptures look like a mask?
A. To popularize the features of the locals.
B. To remind people to protect themselves.
C. To reflect people’s protection of the ocean.

根據(jù)第二段““The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,” Taylor told Dezeen.”(Taylor告訴Dezeen記者:“我們的主要目標(biāo)是讓人們注意到我們的海洋需要我們的幫助?!?可知,水下博物館旨在提高人們保護(hù)海洋的意識(shí)。故選D。
【33題詳解】
細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段“Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.”(這些臉有6英尺高,重達(dá)10噸,被分成兩部分,外部部分像一個(gè)面具。

根據(jù)第四段“Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. The seagrass also helps prevent coastal erosion and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.”(雖然雕塑周圍的水域現(xiàn)在呈現(xiàn)出一種純凈的藍(lán)色,但當(dāng)該項(xiàng)目大約四年前開始時(shí),海底充滿了舊的船只引擎、管道和其他人造垃圾。
根據(jù)最后一段““The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense of care and protection,” Taylor told Dezeen. “If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.””(Taylor告訴Dezeen的記者:“創(chuàng)建水下博物館的想法是為了吸引更多的人在水下,并培養(yǎng)一種關(guān)心和保護(hù)的意識(shí)?!?“如果我們?cè)谏指浇永?,?huì)引起公眾的強(qiáng)烈抗議。 但這種情況每天都在我們周圍的水域發(fā)生,而且很大程度上被忽視了。” 可推斷,海洋的情況很容易被忽視。故選A。

When I was in the sixth grade, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit it.
On a Monday morning, our teacher assigned “a secret friend” for the coming week. She wrote each Kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into ajar; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left bubble gum, pens and even money. It seems that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, when I walked into my classroom, something on my desk caught my eye. As I came closer, I found there sat a can of perfumed powder. “Oh, my God, it’s an old lady gift that I had received!” I thought to myself. What’s worse, the powder had already been opened. I felt my face turn red as I put it into my desk.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the power started talking trash about my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible,” I heard myself saying angrily, “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and filed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normally like me to say mean things like that about someone.

One possible version:
Suddenly my classmate Jenny rushed up to me, tears streaming down her face. I started to feel uneasy and didn't know what I could do to calm her down. I just knew that my words had deeply hurt her. It was not until then that I knew Jenny was my secret friend. Soon later, Jenny stopped crying and murmured to me in disappointment, “Why do you say like that, although you don't like the present which I give you? Do you know the package is my most valuable things that my grandma gave me before she left me?”A few minutes later, Jenny cried again. I felt very regretful to say such words and kept apologizing to her.
Along with my apologies, I told her the fact. Actually I didn’t dislike the present that she gave me, I just felt a bit embarrassed when I received it with many classmates watching me and discussing my gift. I tried to explained to her that I had trouble fitting in the groups since I was in the sixth grade. I knew I have said such mean words. I ensured that I would never do things like that and keep the gift preciously all the time. Can we make up? I said sincerely. “OK, I believe you,” Jenny nodded. We promised each other that we would always be the best friend from then on.
