A few years ag, I bught a Leg Taj Mahal (泰姬陵樂高積木) fr my dad’s

my dad and I gathered arund the large dining table t piece the mdel tgether, faced
with thusands f tiny white pieces, each packaged in numbered plastic bags,
accmpanied by a thick instructin bk.
The evenings passed quickly, and the building rse befre ur eyes. We culd see
ur effrts prducing gd results, and as we turned t the bring task f rdering the
clred bricks n the building’s flr, ur cnversatin t tk a turn. We were
amazed by hw cmplex the mdel was and its instructin bk. We realized the bk
itself was a wrk f art, beautiful, but als surprisingly detailed and clear. It prvided
us with the cmfrt f certainty. We knew if we fllwed all the instructins, we
wuld end up with a mdel that lked exactly like the picture n the bx. If we made
a mistake, all we had t d was t repeat ur steps and start again.
Life, hwever, des nt fit tgether s neatly and rarely gives us such
straightfrward instructins. We talked ver ur respective lives, decisins made, and
actins and chices never taken. Dad reflected n a life well lived, and I, in my
mid-thirties, n the uncertain path that lay ahead. Here, we were the expert architects
ding the assembling (組裝), but ut in the wrld, we were the nes being assembled.
We think we’re in cntrl, but ur chices are shaped by frces beynd ur cntrl. In
the face f uncertainty, we have t prceed, trusting bth in the prcess and the end
result.
Smetimes, n the days I return hme, I g t the spare rm t lk at the
cmpleted Leg mdel, which brings frth a sense f happiness and cmfrt. It
reminds me that life is built slwly, with mistakes, an element f uncertainty and n

If yu recently had truble figuring ut if an image f a persn is real r
generated thrugh artificial intelligence (AI), yu ’ re nt alne. Accrding t a new
study frm University f Waterl, Ontari, Canada, researchers fund that peple
had mre difficulty than was expected distinguishing wh is a real persn and wh is
artificially generated.
The Waterl study saw 260 participants prvided with 20 unlabeled pictures: 10
f which were f real peple btained frm Ggle searches, and the ther 10
generated by Stable Diffusin r DALL-E, tw cmmnly used AI prgrams that
generate images.
Participants were asked t label each image as real r AI-generated and explain
why they made their decisin. Only 61% f participants culd tell the difference
between AI-generated peple and real nes, far belw the 85% threshld (門檻) that
researchers expected. “Peple are nt as adept at telling the difference as they think
they are,” said Andrea Pcl, a PhD candidate in Cmputer Science at the University
f Waterl.
Participants paid attentin t details such as fingers, teeth, and eyes as pssible
indicatrs when lking fr AI-generated cntent — but their assessments weren ’t
always crrect. Pcl nted that the nature f the study allwed participants t
cmpare phts in detail, while mst Internet users lk at images in passing.
“Peple wh are just scrlling thrugh nline infrmatin in a rush r dn’t have time
wn’t pick up n these clues,” Pcl said.
Pcl added that the extremely rapid rate at which AI technlgy is develping
makes it particularly difficult t understand the ptential fr ill-intentined r illegal
actin caused by AI-generated images. The pace f academic research and
law-making isn’t ften able t keep up: AI-generated images have becme even mre
realistic since the study began in late 2022.
“Disinfrmatin isn’t new, but the tls f disinfrmatin have been cnstantly
evlving and prgressing, ” Pcl said. “ It may get t a pint where peple, n
matter hw trained they are, will still struggle t distinguish real images frm false
nes. That’s why we need t develp tls t identify and prevent this.”
28. What des the underlined phrase “adept at” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Skillful at. B. Cncerned with. C. Puzzled abut. D. Curius abut.
29. What caused the unsatisfying result f the experiment?
A. Failing t receive prfessinal training.
B. Lacking enugh attentin t the details.
C. Shrtage f experts’ guidance
D. Ignring facial expressins.
30. What’s Pcl’s advice n dealing with disinfrmatin?
A. Prviding peple with related training.
B. Banning the spread f disinfrmatin.
C. Ding sme field research in persn.
D. Designing tls t recgnize and stp it.
31. What is the text mainly abut?
A. Methds f distinguishing disinfrmatin.
B. Challenges caused by AI-generated images.
C. Difficulties in telling AI-generated images.
D. Differences between real and false images.

Cycling advcates in Canada’s Prvince f British Clumbia (B.C.) hpe a new
U.S. study will bst the case t allw cyclists t yield, which means t slw dwn
and pass withut stpping fully, at stp signs and safely rll thrugh intersectins (道
路交叉口). While it’s the law like B.C. fr cyclists t stp at stp signs, like every
ther rad user, it’s cmmn t see peple n tw wheels chse an illegal yield —
rlling past the sign after checking it’s safe t pass thrugh. “It makes it a lt mre
efficient,” said Vancuver cyclist Ben Cper abut getting thrugh intersectins.
“I’m nt ging t cme t a full stp. Yu knw, the amunt f energy it takes t stp
my entire bike and get it ging again — it just desn’t make sense.”
The argument ver whether rlling stps — that is, n need t stp cmpletely,
but pass slwly — shuld be legalized has been nging since the early 1980s when
the state f Idah first made it legal, resulting in the mve being named the Idah stp.
Several ther U.S. states have since fllwed suit, including Oregn. Canada hasn’t
yet adpted laws fr rlling stps fr bikes.
Cycling advcates in B.C. say they’ve been pushing the issue fr years and hpe
a new study frm researchers at Oregn State University, published this mnth in an
academic transprtatin jurnal, will aid their argument.
The Oregn study says with prper educatin fr bth cyclists and drivers, Idah
stps d nt lead either riders r drivers t act unsafely. Researchers bserved 60
peple paired ff wh went thrugh 16 virtual interactin scenes as either cyclist r
driver, cming tgether at a fur-way-stp intersectin. They fund that instead f
drivers being angry tward cyclists wh appeared t be breaking the law by rlling
thrugh, driving participants apprached intersectins either mre slwly r at a
similar pace after being educated abut what bicycle rlling stps were.
Nearly fur ut f five crashes invlving cyclists in B.C. happen at intersectins.
“This research gives decisin-makers infrmatin t supprt prspective legal
plicies, set up educatinal prgrams and design strng enfrcement ( 執(zhí) 行 )
practices,” said Hurwitz, ne f the researchers.
32. What is Ben Cper’s pinin abut cyclists’ yielding at stp signs?
A. It’s mre effective. B. It’s against the law.
C. It’s a waste f time. D. It’s dangerus fr cyclists.
33. What is the result f the study at Oregn State University?
A. Rlling stps always cause mre accidents.
B. Suitable educatin ensures safe “Idah stps”.
C. Study shws rlling stps shuld be banned.
D. Drivers are mad at cyclists yielding at intersectins.
34. What is the attitude f Hurwitz twards legalizatin f yield?
A. Dubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Disprving. D. Supprtive.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Citizens Call fr a Ban n Rlling Stps
B. Bicycle Safety Tips n Rlling Stps
C. B.C. Cyclists Push fr “Idah Stp” Law
D. Plicy Makers Fcus n Cyclist-Driver Crashes
