While dlphins and parrts have been bserved addressing each ther by imitating the sund f thers frm their species, elephants are the first nn-human animals knwn t use names that d nt invlve imitatin, the researchers suggested.

The researchers studied elephant “rumbles” (隆隆聲) recrded at Kenya’s Samburu Natinal Reserve and Ambseli Natinal Park between 1986 and 2022. They identified 469 distinct calls, which included 101 elephants issuing a call and 117 receiving ne. When the researchers played a recrding t an elephant f their friend r family member calling ut their name, the animal respnded psitively and “energetically”, the researchers said. But the same elephant was far less enthusiastic when played the names f thers. “Unlike parrts and dlphins, the elephants did nt merely imitate the call, suggesting that elephants and humans are the nly tw animals knwn t invent ‘randm’ names fr each ther.
