Recently, I had lunch with a yung Chinese student wh studies at a cllege in New Yrk. He is very bright and ambitius and I enjyed ur cnversatin. Still, I felt upset and useless afterwards because I was nt able t prvide him with any gd news. Graduating at the end f this year, he asked me hw he culd find a jb in this cuntry and fulfill his career dreams.
In recent years, students wh fund a jb here after graduatin have had t g thrugh a cruel lttery system t btain their H-1B wrking visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because f the ever grwing number f applicants. Last year, there were 233,000 applicants and nly 30 percent f them were lucky, abut half f the rate in 2013.
And it can nly becme wrse. US frmer President Dnald Trump’s immigratin plicies in this cuntry have been tightening up and this trend will cntinue fr at least the next few years. In this case, freign students studying scial sciences, a field in which starting salaries are rarely abve the required amunt, can kiss their visa hpes gdbye.
Cmpared t the lder generatin f Chinese students, tday’s yung peple n lnger cnsider the US as the nly ptin. Many start t think China ffers better pprtunities in the lnger term.
This is nt t say that Chinese students in the US are nt interested in jb pprtunities here any mre. A few years f wrk experience in the US can give them advantages when they finally land back in their hme cuntry. But if the jb pprtunities are largely reduced by the tightening f immigratin plicy, I expect there will be a decline. And if that happens, it is the American ecnmy that will suffer frm the lss f thse educated, hard-wrking and talented immigrants.
24.The authr felt useless because ___.
A.he culdn’t find a jb in the fierce jb market.
B.he was less bright and ambitius than the Chinese yung student.
C.he culdn’t win the cruel lttery.
D.he had t make the Chinese student realize it was difficult t find wrk there.
25.Which is nt the reasn why freign students have difficulty finding jbs in the US?
A.It is increasingly hard fr them t get their H-1B wrking visa.
B.The number f applicants in the jb market is ever grwing.
C.Dnald Trump’s immigratin plicies have been tightening up.
D.The starting salaries they require are higher than expected.
26.Suppsing there were 250, 000 applicants in 2013, hw many f them gt their H-1B wrking visa?
A.125, 000. B.75, 000. C.150. 000. D.200, 000.
27.What’s the writer’s attitude twards the tightening f immigratin plicy in the US?
A.Indifferent. B.Cncerned. C.Favrable. D.Objective.

Beautiful cral reefs (珊瑚礁) in Thai seas have been gradually wrsening due t glbal warming that causes cral bleaching, in additin t certain human activities withut prper cntrl and envirnmental cnsciusness. Recently, researchers frm Thai university Chulalngkm have created 3D-printed cral reefs mdeled n the nature f real crals called Innvareef t accelerate the recvery f the cral reef ecsystem.
Innvareef crals are cated with calcium and phsphate nutrients (鈣磷營(yíng)養(yǎng)物) that crals need t thrive and cnsist f flat surfaces. The reefs’ hles serve as habitats and hiding places fr many sea animals. Artificial reefs als make use f hydrdynamics technlgy t enhance their resistance t tidal frces and ensure that they stay in place. Finally, the PH (level f acidity) f the selected type f cement used fr the reefs is clse t that f seawater, and the design cncept is that f Leg, easily assembled (組裝) and disassembled blcks that are easy t transprt and fix.
“The Innvareef is nt t large. It’s light-weighted and can be carried by anyne thus saving transprtatin csts. Yu can simply put it at any desired lcatin in the sea and then dive dwn t put all the units tgether t cmplete the Innvareef. Nt even five minutes afterward, fish and several cean creatures start t cme in t survey and make it their new habitat, leading t bidiversity arund the Innvareef. Mre imprtantly, the research data indicates that the settlement and grwth rates f planula n the Innvareef are better than thse n ther artificial reefs,”said Assciate Prfessr Dr. Nantarika Chansue at Chulalngkrn University.
Innvareef is the hpe fr the effective recvery f natural cral reefs. Nw the team is fcused n adding mre details s that the new structures lk mre like natural reefs. Fr the future generatins f Innvareef, the team will develp a mre specific design fr each sea species in the area.
28.What functin is expected f the Innvareef?
A.T extend the life f crals. B.T mnitr the grwth f crals.
C.T help restre natural cral reefs. D.T prtect cral reefs frm human destructin.
29.What d we knw abut the Innvareef frm paragraph 2?
A.It is highly resistant t heat. B.It has lw manufacturing csts.
C.It prvides rich nutrients fr fish. D.It is prtable and easy t assemble.
30.What are Dr. Nantarika Chansue’s wrds mainly abut?
A.The advantages f the Innvareef. B.The inspiratin fr the Innvareef.
C.The methds f imprving cean habitats. D.The imprtance f prtecting bidiversity.
31.What will researchers prbably d in the future?
A.Apply the Innvareef n a large scale. B.Carry ut mre tests n the Innvareef.
C.Make a specific design f the Innvareef. D.Cnduct further research n natural cral reefs

Mst new runners assume that the best way t imprve is simply t run greater and greater distances. While it’s true that ging farther and faster will imprve yur running skills, mst caches and trainers will advise sme level f strength training as well. Fcusing n yur cre is a cmmn suggestin. A recent study seems t back this up. In the Jurnal f Bimechanics, researchers investigated a symptm that has lng cnfused runners frm beginners t experienced nes. A gd number f runners, 14 percent t be exact, experience gradual lwer back pain. The results f the new study seem t suggest that weak deep cre muscles might be t blame. When these muscles aren’t strng enugh, the study fund, muscles n ther areas f the bdy kick in t keep the runner up-right, eventually leading t back pain.
T understand the rle that these muscles play, the researchers had eight vlunteers with minimal running experience run alng an indr track. High-speed cameras and 3D mtin detectrs analyzed which muscles mved, and hw much. Once they created a wrking cmputer mdel fr each runner, the scientists imitated what wuld happen if certain deep muscles were weaker, r shut ff cmpletely. As it turns ut, when a persn can’t use their deep cre muscles very well, their bdies still want (and need) t maintain a gd running frm, and uses surface muscles t d s.
What’s wrng with that? A muscle is a muscle, right? Nt exactly. While the surface muscles are ften targeted in wrkuts - they give yu a six-pack (六塊腹肌), after all - they are pretty useless when it cmes t supprting yur spine (脊柱). The deeper cre muscles, which essentially lie beneath and can’t be seen frm the utside, d all the heavy spinal lifting.
It’s imprtant t nte that even when yu’ve made these muscles super strng, yu wn’t likely ntice visible results. But they will prbably help yu run better and definitely help prevent ptential back pain. Perhaps thrwing a nice lng plank (平板支撐) may wrk.
32.Why d mst new runners want t run farther and faster?
A.Because they think it can imprve running skills.
B.Because sme caches and trainers advise them t d s.
C.Because a recent study prves it t be helpful.
D.Because it’s a kind f useful strength training.
33.What des the new study shw us when peple d the running?
A.14 percent f the runners have weak muscles.
B.The muscles n ther areas lead t back pain.
C.Strng deep cre muscles can prevent back pain.
D.The beginning runners usually have weak cre muscles.
34.What happens when peple d the running?
A.A wrking cmputer mdel can be created.
B.Certain deep muscles becme weaker.
C.They use bth deep and surface muscles.
D.Deep cre muscles prbably functin first.
35.What can we infer frm the text?
A.Ding a lng plank can benefit the runners.
B.The spine is supprted by the deep muscles.
C.Training the six-pack is useless.
D.Super strng muscles can’t be seen.
