In these days f electrnic everything, yu’d think that mst businesses wuldn’t be using paper cheques (支票) any mre. In fact, fr mst businesses, paper cheques are still a thing. As many as ne in three business deals are paid this way and 81% f firms in the US are still using paper cheques t settle sme f their bills.
Stp the eye-rlling because yeah, we knw electrnic payments are quicker t make, authrize and cmplete, and they’re easier t track and reprt. They save paper and are gd fr the envirnment. They’re mre secure, efficient and cst less. They can be made and apprved frm anywhere. A grwing number f businesses nt nly prefer electrnic payments, but are requiring custmers t d this. Even Micrsft recently annunced that it wuld n lnger accept paper cheques frm its partners.
But still ... I’m ging t miss the paper cheque. I’ve always enjyed the circumstance f the biweekly cheque run and the grandest part is the final apprval evidenced by the ultimate prf f authrity: the signature. Sme f my clients take delight in the pprtunity t examine and sign every cheque because there’s n better example f pwer than this. Paper cheques are nt nly a written frm f cntracts favred by firms thrughut histry but als a frm f marketing where cmpanies can prudly display their lgs. They are clear evidence f stability and reliability
Unfrtunately, the writing is n the wall fr the paper cheque. And that makes me sad. Accrding t the Small Business Administratin, the majrity f small business wners are ver the age f 50. We grew up with Swansn TV Dinners, hckey withut helmets (頭盔) and appinted smking sectins in airplanes. We’ll retire and yunger generatins will bury us alng with ur chequebks.

Fr decades, “simpler is better” has been accepted as a universal truth in marketing. Nick Light, assistant prfessr f marketing at the UO Lundquist Cllege f Business, has tested that assumptin. He fund that mst cnsumers prefer fferings that appear t be easy t use and understand. Hwever, pushing simplicity can have a hidden, cstly dwnside.
“Simplicity is nt a silver bullet,” Light said. “This methd might wrk fr established cmpanies with track recrds t back up their claims. But it can be risky fr a start up with n histry r a cmpany in a cmplicated market categry where failures r breakdwns are mre cmmn.
Light’s earlier experience stimulated his interest in the study. He was a marketing manager at a direct-t-cnsumer mattress (床墊) cmpany. With the catchwrd“ne perfect mattress”, the cmpany ffered nly ne mattress mdel shipped directly t the cnsumer’s dr, dramatically simplifying the mattress-buying prcess. “Sme custmers calling with even minr prblems such as a slight disclratin in the material, wuld get really angry,” Light said. “They wuld say things like, ‘I dn’t understand what’s s difficult abut this,’ even when prducing and shipping mattresses are quite cmplex. These custmers were getting verly upset because the prduct and prcess had been labeled as simple.”
The study als shwed that cnsumers judged the cmplexity f brands r prducts based n their mental cnnectins. Fr example, when study participants viewed advertisements fr tw different cmpanies, they frmed mental pictures f the simplicity r cmplexity f the brand depending n hw plain r busy the art was and the details prvided in each ad.
Light als lked int prduct quality and custmer pinins and fund that cnsumers are less likely t recmmend simpler brands after failures cmpared t mre cmplex brands. Therefre, the lessn fr marketers is t be mre careful abut building branding and advertising strategies arund simplicity, because they culd easily backfire if the prduct r service fails t deliver.
32. What des the underlined wrds “a silver bullet” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. A risky investment.B. A business strategy.C. A quick-fix methd.D. A cure-all slutin.
33. What did the use f simplicity in the mattress business lead t?
A. Rising custmer dissatisfactin.B. Reduced expenses fr prducers.
C. Lnger transprt time fr gds.D. Mre cmments frm custmers
34. What mainly influence cnsumers’ views n a brand accrding t the study?
A. The cmpany’s histrical backgrund.B. The impressins shaped by ad design.
C. The advertising reviews n its website.D. The richness f clr in its packaging
35. What advice des the authr give t marketers?
A. Advertise after-sale custmer service.B. Be cautius abut simplicity-themed effrts.
C. Stress prduct quality ver simplicity.D. Imprve brand presence thrugh scial media.
