In these days f electrnic everything, yu’d think that mst businesses wuldn’t be using paper cheques(支票) any mre. In fact, fr mst businesses, paper cheques are still a thing. As many as ne in three business deals are paid this way and 81% f firms in the US are still using paper cheques t settle sme f their bills.
Stp the eye-rlling because yeah, we knw electrnic payments are quicker t make, authrize and cmplete, and they’re easier t track and reprt. They save paper and are gd fr the envirnment. They’re mre secure, efficient and cst less. They can be made and apprved frm anywhere. A grwing number f businesses nt nly prefer electrnic payments, but are requiring custmers t d this. Even Micrsft recently annunced that it wuld n lnger accept paper cheques frm its partners.
But still ... I’m ging t miss the paper cheque. I’ve always enjyed the circumstance f the biweekly cheque run and the grandest part is the final apprval evidenced by the ultimate prf f authrity: the signature. Sme f my clients take delight in the pprtunity t examine and sign every cheque because there’s n better example f pwer than this. Paper cheques are nt nly a written frm f cntracts favred by firms thrughut histry but als a frm f marketing where cmpanies can prudly display their lgs. They are clear evidence f stability and reliability.
Unfrtunately, the writing is n the wall fr the paper cheque. And that makes me sad. Accrding t the Small Business Administratin, the majrity f small business wners are ver the age f 50. We grew up with Swansn TV Dinners, hckey withut helmets(頭盔) and appinted smking sectins in airplanes. We’ll retire and yunger generatins will bury us alng with ur chequebks.
We knw this will unavidably change. Fr nw, many businesses in the US are still relying n paper cheques t pay. Yes, they’re inefficient and cstlier. But please be patient. Allw me t have this ne little enjyment while it lasts.
8.What phenmenn des the authr describe in paragraph 1?
A.Ding business is increasingly difficult.B.Everything is ging electrnic in the US.
C.Paper cheques are still in use in business.D.Mst American firms fail t pay the bills.
9.What des Micrsft’s decisin indicate?
A.The grwing trend f shifting t electrnic payments.
B.The change in frms f cperatin in big cmpanies.
C.The ptential cmeback f paper cheques in the market.
D.The ppularity f electrnic payments amng custmers.
10.What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 3?
A.Defend his preference.B.Intrduce a new cncept.
C.Call fr readers’ supprt.D.Prmte an ld traditin.
11.Why des the authr mentin Swansn TV Dinners and hckey withut helmets?
A.T emphasize the utdated nature f past trends.
B.T shw his attachment t ld-schl practices.

D.T suggest the reliability f traditinal methds.
Fr decades, “simpler is better” has been accepted as a universal truth in marketing. Nick Light, assistant prfessr f marketing at the UO Lundquist Cllege f Business, has tested that assumptin. He fund that mst cnsumers prefer fferings that appear t be easy t use and understand. Hwever, pushing simplicity can have a hidden, cstly dwnside.
“Simplicity is nt a silver bullet,” Light said. “This methd might wrk fr established cmpanies with track recrds t back up their claims. But it can be risky fr a start-up with n histry r a cmpany in a cmplicated market categry where failures r breakdwns are mre cmmn.
Light’s earlier experience stimulated his interest in the study. He was a marketing manager at a direct-t-cnsumer mattress(床墊) cmpany. With the catchwrd “ne perfect mattress”, the cmpany ffered nly ne mattress mdel shipped directly t the cnsumer’s dr, dramatically simplifying the mattress-buying prcess. “Sme custmers calling with even minr prblems such as a slight disclratin in the material, wuld get really angry,” Light said. “They wuld say things like, “I dn’t understand what’s s difficult abut this,’ even when prducing and shipping mattresses are quite cmplex. These custmers were getting verly upset because the prduct and prcess had been labeled as simple.”
The study als shwed that cnsumers judged the cmplexity f brands r prducts based n their mental cnnectins. Fr example, when study participants viewed advertisements fr tw different cmpanies, they frmed mental pictures f the simplicity r cmplexity f the brand depending n hw plain r busy the art was and the details prvided in each ad.
Light als lked int prduct quality and custmer pinins and fund that cnsumers are less likely t recmmend simpler brands after failures cmpared t mre cmplex brands. Therefre, the lessn fr marketers is t be mre careful abut building branding and advertising strategies arund simplicity, because they culd easily backfire if the prduct r service fails t deliver.
12.What des the underlined wrds “a silver bullet” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.A risky investment.B.A business strategy.C.A quick-fix methd.D.A cure-all slutin.
13.What did the use f simplicity in the mattress business lead t?
A.Rising custmer dissatisfactin.B.Reduced expenses fr prducers.
C.Lnger transprt time fr gds.D.Mre cmments frm custmers.
14.What mainly influence cnsumers’ views n a brand accrding t the study?
A.The cmpany’s histrical backgrund.B.The impressins shaped by ad design.
C.The advertising reviews n its website.D.The richness f clr in its packaging.
15.What advice des the authr give t marketers?
A.Advertise after-sale custmer service.B.Be cautius abut simplicity-themed effrts.
C.Stress prduct quality ver simplicity.D.Imprve brand presence thrugh scial media.
When I was in primary schl, reading index cards(索引卡) under the guidance f ur librarian was hw my classmates and I lcated the bks we wanted and entered the wrld f ideas. It was amazing. 16 Then the same librarian explained that bk-lcating infrmatin was als available n a website. We culd select bks withut even leaving ur chairs.
17 The librarian was nt cnfident that the new technlgy wuld last. S, as kids, we kept ne ft planted in each wrld, learning the digital landscape while als physically explring libraries.
Thrughut educatinal histry, new tls have been accepted, rejected, r ignred. Digital card catalgues (目錄) are an example f tls that facilitate learning, leading many schls t adpt a generally friendly attitude tward new technlgies. 18 Sme tls negatively affect ur learning, the mst recent example being ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbt that can respnd t the questins ne asks, drawing n stres f infrmatin and its interactins with ther users. Where ChatGPT impacts educatin is in cmpleting tasks assigned t students. Students can quit thinking— allwing ChatGPT t digest difficult readings n their behalf. 19
But learning t write is learning t think. Thinking is smething we need t grw and prgress as human beings. 20 ChatGPT and related technlgies destry this imprtant task. I recmmend that students resist emplying them in the cntext f reading and writing if they wish t be transfrmed by their learning.
A.Sure, AI can d these tasks fr us.
B.Educatin is meant t shape a persn.
C.But nt all tls are equally cnstructive.
D.They can als ask it t cnstruct essays assigned by prfessrs.
E.If allwed t have access t AI-based tls, n ne wuld ever think.
F.Hwever, this whle prcess seemed disappinting the very next day.
G.In thse days, we were living between the digital and pre-digital wrlds.

, I was unharmed and stepped ut t the situatin. The girl wh had hit me was in tears. She t me and explained that her brakes(剎車) had taken lnger t because f the slippery rad. Minutes later, a pliceman and directly issued the girl a ticket fr “failure t cntrl speed”, and several ther ffenses, which culd have led t the f her license. The girl was extremely upset, but she was helpless against the result. I cmfrted her that it wasn’t her and prmised t help.
Tw weeks later, I received a ntice t appear as a witness in the girl’s trial. Althugh it wasn’t required, I decided t seek . Upn seeing me in curt, the girl appeared quite . I recunted the incident , saying neither f us was speeding and that the rad was exceptinally slippery. I als the girl wasn’t t blame.
When I finished speaking, the curtrm erupted int applause, and the judge praised me fr my citizen’s duty. After careful cnsideratin, he dismissed the against the girl. I believe whever encunters such a case wuld d the same.

At 6:00 am, I stepped ut f my car and int ne f the httest July days ever recrded in Hustn. My T-shirt was sn wet with sweat as I waited in the parking lt. Experienced runners surrunded me, all wearing apprpriate clthes fr the intense heat. At the age f 53, I was abut t train fr my first half marathn. This was my plan fr building friendships in an unknwn city.
Hustn was quite different frm Suthern Califrnia where I grew up, went t cllege, married, and raised tw daughters. Mving here due t my husband’s jb transfer(調(diào)動) was a real challenge, especially at a time when many f my friends were thinking abut retirement. With my daughters grwn, gne were the days f PTA meetings, team mm duties, and attending my children’s high schl events. Hw culd I make any friends in a city where I hardly knew anyne? What wuld each day lk like? Wuld my tw aging dgs be my nly cmpanins(伙伴)?
The answer arrived when Annie, the real estate agent, unexpectedly called me ne day. “Dana, wuld yu be interested in jining the lcal chapter f USA Fit here in twn?” Hnestly, I had n idea what she was talking abut. What I did knw was that Annie was a runner. I had even heard her mentin marathns befre.
“What des it invlve? I mean, is this abut running? But that’s just nt my thing.” I was hping she wuld hear the disinterest in my vice. Nt Annie! She didn’t give up easily. “Cme n! Yu’ll lve it! It’s a grup f runners and walkers wh meet fr six mnths, training fr the Hustn Marathn and Half Marathn. Yu’ll make friends, Dana. Trust me.”
Excuses raced thrugh my mind, but Annie’s prmise f ptential friendships wn me ver. The prspect f cnnecting with thers wh shared a cmmn gal was irresistible and sn I fund myself standing amng the “purple peple”, the grup f half marathn walkers, n that first training day.
