Every summer, thusands f swamp sparrws (沼澤麻雀) sing sngs in the Nrth America’s wetlands. These special brwn birds nly knw a few sngs, but they sing them very well. In fact, their sng list hasn’t changed much fr hundreds f years.
Like humans, baby swamp sparrws learn sngs frm their elders. “Swamp sparrws just make few mistakes when they learn their sngs.” says bilgist Rbert Lachlan. Actually, they cpy the music s well that it stays the same frm the elder t the yung.
“Just like children, the sparrws dn’t remember every sng they hear,” Lachlan says. “They just pick up the sngs they hear mst ften. It’s an example f what scientists call ‘cnfrmist bias’.” Until recently, this learning ability was thught t be special nly t humans.
Between 2008 and 2009, Lachlan’s team recrded the sngs f 615 swamp sparrws acrss the nrtheastern United States. The study fund that nly 2% f these sparrws sang a different sng, while the ther sparrws sang sngs just frm their list. “The sng-types that yu hear in the wetland f Nrth America tday may have been there 1,000 years ag.” says Lachlan.
Hwever, anther team fund that a few sparrws changed their sng list in recent years. Nw scientists are explring the influence f lsing habitat (棲息地) n sngbirds. Man-made barriers—such as cities, rads and plantatins—can break up a bird ppulatin int a number f islated (孤立的) grups. It stps birds frm sharing their sngs with each ther.
“The findings are really exciting.” says scientist Andrew Farnswrth. He hpes that future research will start frm these studies. Fr example, scientists might learn hw ther animals keep their cultural traditins alive. Farnswrth adds, “It’s really cl t think this culd happen in ther animals t.”

Julie Andersen’s great interest in diving (潛水) led t her lve fr sharks and the cean. She turned her lve int a jb and started cean cnservatin grups.
