I was sitting in a chemistry lab class during my first year f university, nervus abut the experiment we were t perfrm. I grabbed a pipette and, as I feared, my hand started t shake. The experience was disheartening. I was hping t pursue a career in science, but I started t wnder whether that wuld be pssible. I thught my dreams had crashed t the grund.
I was a by brn with brain damage. My family managed t find gd dctrs where we lived, in Leningrad (nw St. Petersburg), Russia, and I tk part in clinical trials testing new treatments. Shrtly after my first birthday, I started walking and it became clear my intelligence functin was unaffected. S, in sme sense, I was lucky. Still, I culdn’t d sme things grwing up. Bth hands shk, especially when I was nervus r embarrassed. My left hand was much wrse than my right, s I learned t write and d simple tasks with my right hand, but it wasn’t easy t d anything precisely.
As a teenager, I faced a lt f bullying at schl. Feeling alne, I jined a study grup called “The natural wrld”. I thught that getting int the wrld f animals wuld keep me away frm peple. That’s hw I came int the field f bilgy. At university, I enjyed the lectures in my science classes. Many lab tasks prved impssible, hwever. As I struggled with my md, I read a bk abut depressin. Frm then n, the physilgy f mental disrders became my scientific passin. I lked int what was being dne lcally and was excited t discver a lab that did behaviral experiments in rats t study depressin.
At the end f my secnd year, I apprached the prfessr f the lab t see whether I culd wrk with her. I was afraid t admit I culdn’t d sme lab tasks. T my relief, she was cmpletely supprtive. She set me t wrk perfrming behaviral experiments fr thers in the lab with the help f clleagues. I lved the supprtive atmsphere and stayed there t cmplete my master’s and Ph.D.
I’ve cme t realize that my hands aren’t the barrier I thught they were. By making use f my abilities and wrking as part f a team, I’ve been able t fllw my passins. I’ve als realized that there’s much mre t being a scientist than perfrming the physical labr. I may nt cllect all the data in my papers, but I’m fully capable f designing experiments and interpreting results, which, t me, is the mst exciting part f science.

Peple are already paying mre and mre fr fd due t glbal warming — and rising temperatures will drive fd prices a lt higher in the next decade. Accrding t a study by the Eurpean Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alne will be pushing up wrldwide fd prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
T find ut hw this is affecting fd prices, Maximilian Ktz at the Ptsdam Institute fr Climate Impact Research and his clleagues examined data n the mnthly prices and weather cnditins in 121 cuntries between 1996 and 2021. By lking fr assciatins between fd prices and factrs such as the average mnthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures f drught and extreme rainfall, they fund a strng link between the average temperature and the fd prices a mnth r s later.
In regins nrth f 40 degrees, like the latitude (緯度) f New Yrk City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led t falling fd prices. But abve-average temperatures increased fd prices in summer and at all times in the rest f the wrld.
“The study didn’t lk at why prices rse, but the likely explanatin is that extreme heat is reducing yields,’’ Ktz says. “Crps may be drying ut n the vine (藤) when they shuld be being harvested.’’ Factrs such as extreme rainfall had less impact n fd prices than average temperatures. This may be because flding tends t be lcalized, while abve-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar cnclusins. Ktz’s team then went further by investigating hw fd prices culd change based n average temperature rises in climate mdel predictin. In the wrst situatin, glbal fd inflatin (食品通脹) due t climate change ges ver 4% per year by 2060. “We need t be aware f the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges fr fd security,’’ says Ktz. “Warming-fueled extreme weather is increasingly affecting fd prductin arund the wrld. If farmers dn’t adapt their practices t better cpe with rising temperatures, the lsses will becme mre serius.’’
8. What des the study fcus n?
A. The impact f climate change n fd prices.
B. The factrs in the rising living csts.
C. The effects f natural disasters n fd prductin.
D. The cmparisn f fd prices in different regins.
9. Hw did researchers reach their cnclusins?
A. By cnducting a survey amng farmers.B. By referring t previus studies.
C. By tracking sme cities fr years.D. By analyzing a mass f data.
10. What is the main reasn fr the rising fd prices accrding t Ktz?
A. Frequent rainfall.B. Extreme high temperature.
C. The increasing demand fr crps.D. The influence f trade plicies.
11. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?
A. T call n peple t pay attentin t fd security.
B. T urge farmers t take actins t deal with the climate issue.
C. T predict the lss caused by the heat wave.
D. T explain the situatin f glbal fd inflatin.

Advcates f AI chatbts in educatinal settings say the tls can assist in activities like brainstrming — r help students get started n tugh math prblems. But many teachers say their students are shrt f the skills t imprve upn what AI prduces, r the maturity (成熟) and self-awareness t knw where the wrk f AI ends and their wn respnsibility begins.
A 2024 study f nearly 1,000 high schl students put the matter t a test: 9th, 10th, and 11th graders attended a brief math lessn, then practised slving related prblems in preparatin fr a quiz. Sme relied n traditinal methds — cnsulting their ntes and textbks t find pssible answers — while thers had access t a basic versin r a tutr versin (輔導(dǎo)版) f ChatGPT.
The results were a success f technlgy — until they weren’t. Students using the basic and tutr GPTs scred an astnishing 48 percent and 127 percent better than their peers during the practices, respectively, but when the same students went t get back the infrmatin frm their memry during a fllw-up clsed-bk test, their math skills had disappeared. Test perfrmance f the students wh had used the basic versin f ChatGPT drpped s sharply that they scred 17 percent belw their peers wh had relied n pen and paper. Given the pprtunity, students used the sftware as a “crutch” and ften skipped straight t the answer, the researchers cncluded. When applied at key mments, the technlgy actually “runs the risk f blcking learning.”
But ChatGPT and ther similar AI tls aren’t ut f the game. In several studies, the tls perfrmed well when designed t guide student learning-by refusing t give away answers, fr example, r asking in-depth fllw-up questins. AI is making rapid prgress, but isn’t a threat t replace teachers. Fr nw, it’s nly as smart as its human makers.
12. What is a prblem f students when using AI chatbts?
A. They are nt aware f hw AI chatbts wrk.
B. They lack the ability t emply AI effectively.
C. They are incapable f imprving AI chatbts.
D They refuse t take their wn respnsibility.
13. Hw did GPT users perfrm cmpared t students using traditinal methds?
A. Basic GPT users perfrmed best during the practices.
B. Tutr GPT users scred 127% better during the test.
C. Basic GPT users’ perfrmance drpped during the test.
D. Tutr GPT users scred 17% lwer during the practices.
14. What des the underlined wrd “crutch” mean in paragraph 3?
A. A device t help peple walk.B. A strategy t deepen learning.
C. A tl t imprve math skills.D. A shrtcut t find quick answers.
15. What are AI tls expected t d in educatin setting?
A. Enhance students’ thinking ability.B. Fllw AI designers’ instructins.
C. Give in-depth answers instantly.D. Replace traditinal teaching methds.

根據(jù)前文“Engage with the text. Engagement is crucial when reading literature. (與文本互動。在閱讀文學(xué)作品時(shí),投入是至關(guān)重要的)”可知,本段的主題是講述與文本互動,所以G項(xiàng)“This means actively interacting with the text, nt just reading the wrds (這意味著積極地與文本互動,而不僅僅是閱讀單詞)”是對前句的進(jìn)一步解釋,而后文“Ask questins as yu read: Why did the character d that? What des this scene symblize? What might the authr be trying t say? This active engagement helps yu t think critically and t immerse (沉浸在) yurself in the literary wrld. (當(dāng)你閱讀的時(shí)候問一些問題:為什么這個(gè)角色要那樣做?這個(gè)場景象征著什么?作者可能想說什么?這種積極的參與可以幫助你批判性地思考,讓自己沉浸在文學(xué)世界中)”是講述互動的具體方法。故選G項(xiàng)。
【17題詳解】
根據(jù)前文“Understand the histrical and cultural cntext. (了解歷史和文化背景)”以及后文“It reflects the culture in which it was written. By researching the histrical perid, the authr’s life, and the scial nrms (規(guī)范) f the time, yu can gain a deeper understanding f the text.
設(shè)空處位于段首,為本段中心句,根據(jù)后文“Literature is an art frm that uses language in creative and ften cmplex ways. Pay attentin t the authr’s use f literary devices such as imagery, symblism, metaphr, and irny. Knwing these techniques can reveal hidden layers f meaning and give yu a greater appreciatin f the authr’s craft.
根據(jù)前文“Reflect n themes and persnal relevance. Great literature ften deals with themes that are universal and timeless. Reflect n the themes yu encunter in the text and cnsider hw they relate t yur wn experiences and beliefs.
Literature is meant t be shared and discussed. Cnversatins with thers can enhance yur understanding and enjyment f a text. Jin a bk club, participate in nline frums, r simply discuss the bk with friends r classmates. These discussins can prvide yu with new perspectives (觀點(diǎn)).
