I used t believe that nly wrds culd catch the essence (本質(zhì)) f the human sul. The literary wrks cntained such distinct stries that they shaped the way we saw the wrld. Wrds were what cmpsed the questins we sught t uncver and the answers t thse questins themselves. Wrds were everything.
That belief changed.
In an rdinary math class, my teacher psed a simple questin: What’s 0. 99 runded t the nearest whle number? Easy. When runded t the nearest whle number, 0. 99=1. Smehw, I thught even thugh 0. 99 is nly 0. 01 away frm 1, there’s still a 0. 01 difference. That means even if tw things are nly a little different, they are still different, s desn’t that make them cmpletely different?
My teacher answered my questin by presenting anther equatin (等式) : 1= 0. 9, which culd als be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself withut ever ending.
There was smething mysterius but attractive abut the equatin. The left side was unchangeable, bjective: it cntained a number that ended. On the right was smething endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, smehw, these tw ppsed things were cnnected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thught abut hw much the equatin paralleled ur existence. The left side f the equatin represents that smetimes life itself is s unchangeable and s clear. The cncrete, whle number f the day when yu were brn and the day when yu wuld die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full f limitless pssibilities, and endless pprtunities int the pen future.
S that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equatin with tw sides that balances itself ut. Still, we can’t ever truly seem t put the perfect wrds t it. S pssibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as wrds can. Fr nw, let’s leave it at that: 1= 0. 99999… and live a life like it.
4. What des the authr emphasize abut wrds in paragraph 1?
A. Their wide variety.B. Their literary rigins.
C. Their different sunds.D. Their expressive pwer.
5. What made the authr find the equatin attractive?
A. The repetitin f a number.B. The difference between the tw numbers.
C The questin the teacher raised.D. The way tw different numbers are equal.
6. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured.B. Mirrred.C. Cmpsed.D. Influenced.
7. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Perfect Equatin.B. Numbers Build Equatins.
C An Attractive Questin.D. Wrds Outperfrm Numbers.

The Rman Clsseum was built almst tw thusand years ag. Despite its age and a 14th century earthquake that kncked dwn the suth side, mst f the 150-sme ft building is still standing. Scientists and engineers have lng suspected a key t the building’s durability (使用年限) is the use f a specific Rman cncrete. But exactly hw this slid cncrete has cntributed t the architecture’s strength has been a mystery t researchers acrss the glbe.
A team f researchers recently discvered a ptential answer t why these ancient Rman buildings have been able t weather the test f time while many mdern cncrete structures seem t fall apart after a few decades. The answer is self-healing cncrete.
The material has three cmpnents: limestne (石灰石), vlcanic material and water. What the researchers fund was that the self-healing feature might be simply caused by chemistry accidentally. The limestne in the cncrete is likely the secret.
When the ancient Rmans made mrtar (灰漿), they heated up the lime t turn it int a substance called “quicklime”. And, because they intrduced water t the quicklime during mixing, the heat it prduced set up a chemical fundatin that culd strengthen the cncrete later. When tiny cracks start t frm later, the quicklime stps them frm becming bigger. When it rains, the lime reacts with the water t recmbine as varius frms f calcium carbnate (碳酸鈣), quickly filling the crack r reacting with the vlcanic ash t “heal” the material.
Fr materials scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding f ancient Rman cncrete is a welcme discvery. “This is ne way that the material can be mre envirnmentally friendly,” says Ramirez. “It’s srt f like a message in a bttle. The Rmans made the material. We had t kind f figure ut hw they did it s that we can make better materials — and then, yu knw, in turn, be better prtectrs f ur envirnment.”
8. What can we learn frm Paragraph 1?
A The secret f Rman cncrete has been revealed.
B. The Rman Clsseum was built in the 14th century.
C. The whle Rman Clsseum survived the earthquake.
D. Rman cncrete is essential t the architecture’s strength.
9. What des the underlined wrd “weather” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Take.B. Stand.C. Avid.D. Fail.
10. What d we knw abut the self-healing prcess?
A. The lime itself culd fill the crack later.
B. The quicklime shuld be made n rainy days.
C. The chemical fundatin culd weaken the cncrete.
D. Cmbining water and quicklime wuld prduce heat.
11. What can be inferred frm Ramirez’s wrds?
A. Peple can be inspired t make greener materials.
B. The secret f Rman cncrete is hidden in a bttle.
C. Rman cncrete has greatly imprved the envirnment.
D. Rman cncrete is ppular in making mdern architecture.

The suthwestern United States has experienced drught fr mre than 20 years. Arizna has increasingly pumped (抽吸) water frm undergrund, but that meets less than half f what the state needs. Meanwhile, tens f thusands f new residents arrive every year, and mre cmmunities are built. One reprt shws that a large area near Phenix desn’t have enugh grundwater fr all the hmes that develpers want t build there. That means 800,000 peple.
Sme experts say the slutin is t imprt water frm utside the state. One idea is t build a $5.5 billin desalinatin (脫鹽) plant n Mexic’s Sea f Crtez. The plant wuld remve salt frm the water and pump that water t Arizna thrugh a 200-mile pipeline. Supprters say this culd prvide a water supply fr decades.
Envirnmentalists see a different future. Sme f the salt taken ut f the Sea f Crtez might end up back in the cean, harming wildlife. The pipeline wuld damage land where peple and animals live. And the desalinatin prcess uses lts f energy. This wuld create greenhuse gases, the very gases that are causing the cnditins that have led t Arizna’s water prblems.
Margaret Wilder is a prfessr at the University f Arizna, in Tucsn. She warns that big prjects like this ne culd be used t shw much mre unsustainable develpment in the desert in the future. Mrever, desalinating water wuld likely be a massive expenditure fr Ariznans. Cities pay abut $50 t $150 fr 326,000 gallns. That’s enugh fr a family f three in Phenix fr a year. Desalinated water culd charge 20 times as much.
Envirnmentalists say the gvernment shuld fcus n cutting the demand fr water rather than increasing the supply. That wuld mean taking water-saving measures and limiting hw many hmes are built. Thusands f husehlds in Tucsn, Arizna, are cllecting rainwater and using it fr cking, drinking, and in their gardens. Gvernment leaders have taken ntice. Tucsn als helps residents pay fr equipment that cllects rainwater fr hme use.
12. What is the prblem faced by the suthwestern United States?
A. A ppulatin increase.B. A serius heatwave.
C. A waste f resurces.D. A water shrtage.
13. What d envirnmentalists prbably think f the desalinatin prject?
A. It prvides a lng-term slutin t drught.
B. It wuld harm the planet frm varius aspects.
C. It fails t take peple’s basic needs int accunt.
D. It draws peple’s attentin t envirnmental destructin.
14. What des the underlined part “a massive expenditure” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Affrdable.B. Cstly.C. Unsafe.D. Beneficial.
15. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Peple are unsatisfied with the gvernment’s water measures.
B. Cllecting rainwater is the key t meeting water demands.
C. Peple are explring water resurces with fficial supprt.
D. Public cncern abut water safety has increased.

C. The questin the teacher raised.D. The way tw different numbers are equal.
6. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured.B. Mirrred.C. Cmpsed.D. Influenced.
7. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Perfect Equatin.B. Numbers Build Equatins.
C. An Attractive Questin.D. Wrds Outperfrm Numbers.

根據(jù)第一段“I used t believe that nly wrds culd catch the essence (本質(zhì)) f the human sul. The literary wrks cntained such distinct stries that they shaped the way we saw the wrld. Wrds were what cmpsed the questins we sught t uncver and the answers t thse questins themselves. Wrds were everything.(我曾經(jīng)相信,只有語言才能捕捉到人類靈魂的本質(zhì)。文學作品包含了如此獨特的故事,它們塑造了我們看待世界的方式。文字構(gòu)成了我們試圖揭示的問題,以及這些問題本身的答案)” 可推知,在第一段作者主要強調(diào)了語言的表達力量,故選 D。
【5題詳解】
細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第五段“There was smething mysterius but attractive abut the equatin. The left side was unchangeable, bjective: it cntained a number that ended. On the right was smething endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, smehw, these tw ppsed things were cnnected by an equal sign.(這個方程式神秘而迷人。左邊是不變的、客觀的:里面有一個沒有盡頭的數(shù)字。右邊是無窮無盡的東西,數(shù)字無限重復。然而,不知怎么的,這兩個相反的東西被一個等號連接起來了)”可知,作者覺得這個等式很迷人,因為數(shù)字雖然不同,但是卻被等號連接起來了。由此可知,讓作者覺得這個等式迷人的是兩個不同的數(shù)相等的方式。故選D。
【6題詳解】
詞句猜測題。根據(jù)劃線詞下文“The left side f the equatin represents that smetimes life itself is s unchangeable and s clear. The cncrete, whle number f the day when yu were brn and the day when yu wuld die. But then there is that gap in between life and death.(等式的左邊表示有時候生命本身是如此的不可改變,如此的清晰。你出生的日期和你死亡的日期的具體整數(shù)。但是生與死之間有一段距離)”可知,作者躺在床上思考的是這個等式與我們的存在是多么相似,劃線詞paralleled的意思是“與……十分相似”,和 mirrred意思相近,故選B。
【7題詳解】
主旨大意題。通讀全文,尤其是第四段“My teacher answered my questin by presenting anther equatin (等式): 1= 0. 9, which culd als be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself withut ever ending.(我的老師給出了另一個等式:1=0. 9,也可以表示為1=0. 99999… 不斷重復,沒有盡頭)”和第五段“There was smething mysterius but attractive abut the equatin. The left side was unchangeable, bjective: it cntained a number that ended. On the right was smething endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, smehw, these tw ppsed things were cnnected by an equal sign.(這個方程式神秘而迷人。左邊是不變的、客觀的:里面有一個沒有盡頭的數(shù)字。右邊是無窮無盡的東西,數(shù)字無限重復。然而,不知怎么的,這兩個相反的東西被一個等號連接起來了)”可知,本文主要講的是作者在數(shù)學課上學了一個等式后的一些感悟。由此可知,最恰當?shù)臉祟}是A 選項 “The Perfect Equatin(完美的等式)”。故選A。

A. The secret f Rman cncrete has been revealed.
