The lunch in the back rm f a dull Mscw restaurant cnsisted f small bites f fd and largeshts f vdka. Musk had arrived that mrning with Ade Ressi and Jim Cantrell n their search t buy a used Russian rcket fr their missin t Mars. After many tasts t friendship, the Russians gave the Americans gifts f vdka bttles with labels that had each persn’s image. Musk, wh was hlding his head up with his hand, passed ut, and his head slammed int the table.
That evening, slightly recvered, Musk and his cmpanins met with anther grup in Mscw sellingused missiles. That encunter turned ut t be equally dd. The Russian in charge was missing a frnt tth, s whenever he spke ludly, which was ften, spit wuld fly ut in Musk’s directin. At ne pint, when Musk started his talk abut the need t make humans multiplanetary(多行星), Cantrell recalls, the Russian spit at them.“Did he just spit n us?”Musk asked, eyes wide pen.“Yeah, he did,”Cantrell answered.“I think it’s a sign f disrespect.”
Despite the clwn shw, Musk and Cantrell decided t return t Russia in early 2002. Ressi didn’tcme, but Justine did. This time Musk fcused n buying tw Dnepr rckets, which were ld missiles. The mre he negtiated, the higher the price went. He finally thught he had a deal t pay $18 millin fr tw Dneprs. But then they said n, it was $18 millin fr each.“That’s insane!”he says. The Russians then suggested maybe it wuld be $21 millin each.“They taunted him,”Cantrell recalls.“They said,‘Oh, little by, yu dn’t have the mney?’”
It was frtunate that the meetings went badly. It drve Musk t think bigger. Rather than merely usinga secndhand rcket t put a demnstratin greenhuse n Mars, he wuld attempt ne f the mst audacius(大膽的) prjects f ur times: privately building rckets that culd launch satellites and then humans int rbit and eventually send them t Mars and beynd.

This past year an issue has been bthering me. It’s the way scientists talk.
This is nt a new cncern. Many years ag science writer Susan Hassl and atmspheric scientist Richard Smerville wrte a humrus but serius piece abut hw the terms that climate scientists use mean ne thing t them but ften smething very different t thers. In the climate system, fr example, “psitive feedback”refers t amplifying(放大)feedback lps(循環(huán)), such as the ice-albed feedback.(“Albed,”basically means“reflectivity.”)The lp develps when glbal warming causes Arctic ice tmelt, expsing water that is darker and reflects less f the sun’s warming rays, which leads t mre warming, which leads t mre melting ... and s n. In the climate system, this psitive feedback is a bad thing. But fr mst, it brings t mind cmfrting images, such as receiving praise frm yur bss.
Hassl and Smerville call this“speaking in cde.”Cdes, f curse, are nt intended fr utsiders, but sme scientific language is mysterius even t many insiders.
Studies shw that strange terms, in fact, cnfuse peple and make them feel excluded(排除在外的). One study shwed that even when participants were given definitins fr the terms being used, materials full f technical terms made them less likely t identify with the scientific cmmunity and decreased their verall interest in the subject. In plain wrds:terms turn peple ff.
Of curse, technical terms used in regulatry cntexts may be hard t change fr legal reasns. But if scientists culd explain in a mre accessible way, it wuld help us understand their claims and better appreciate their wrk.
28. What has bthered the authr recently?
A. The latest scientific research.B. The manner scientists behave.
C. The speeches delivered by scientists.D. The terms emplyed by scientists.
29. What leads t the develpment f the lp in“ice-albed feedback”?
A. Changeable temperature.B. Lwer reflectivity f water.
C. The expansin f Arctic ice.C. The decrease in the sun’s warming rays.
30. Why d Hassl and Smerville describe scientific language as“cde”?
A. Because it is intended fr daily use.
B. Because nly experts can understand it.
C. Because it rarely gets acrss t utsiders.
D. Because they want t make the language mysterius.
31. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Scientists:Please Speak Plainly
B. Insiders: Be Friendly t the Public
C. Turn Peple ff with Technical Terms
D. Get Mre Engaged in the Scientific Wrld

The attendance f accident and emergency department(A&E)is variable. We used t jke that Mnday was the busiest day f the week. But sme peple argued that Sunday, and even Tuesday, were als very busy.
In the business sectr, it is well knwn that Mnday has an effect n trading vlume: Mnday has a lwer vlume than ther weekdays. In the medical field, Watsn mentined that mre peple had heart attacks n Mnday mrning—the s-called“Black Mnday Syndrme”. In fact,“Mnday Syndrme”is variably defined in the literature t mean different things t different peple: frm ccupatinal disease t increase in injury, etc. When these effects are gruped tgether and viewed frm the macrscpic(宏觀的)perspective, it culd translate int an increase in demand f the healthcare service n Mnday. If it can be shwn that this pattern f service demand is reprducible in ur lcal setting, then measures can be taken t redistribute resurces t appeal t the uneven demand during the week.
The present study emplyed existing data btained frm the cmputer system f the A&E department f a reginal hspital with a daily attendance f abut 300 per day. The daily attendance frm April t June 2010 was gruped in days f the week, in rder t find ut whether the attendance n Mnday was different frm the rest f the week. Main measuring variables were the mean(平均的)attendance data f different days f the week. Standard deviatin(偏差)and 95% cnfidence interval(CI)f the means were calculated and cmpared. Lastly, mean attendance f Mnday was cmpared t that f nn-Mndays. Careful inspectin f the data shwed that Mnday was the busiest day f the week(Figure 1)—it had significantly higher attendance than Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (p
