如果一個(gè)單詞里面有兩個(gè)或者以上的音節(jié)，我們讀的時(shí)候會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)里面有部分是讀得比較響亮的。這些單詞中讀音特別響亮的音節(jié)就叫單詞的重讀音節(jié)。

元音是構(gòu)成音節(jié)的主體，輔音是音節(jié)的分界線。
1. 兩輔音之間不管有多少個(gè)元音，一般都是一個(gè)音節(jié)。如：bed 床，bet 打賭，seat 坐位，beat 毒打，beaut 極好的 beau'ty 美。2.兩元音字母之間有一個(gè)輔音字母時(shí)，輔音字母歸后一音節(jié)，如：stu'dent 學(xué)生，la'bur 勞動(dòng)。3.有兩個(gè)輔音字母時(shí)，一個(gè)輔音字母歸前一音節(jié)，一個(gè)歸后一音節(jié)，如：let'ter 信，win'ter 冬天。
單音節(jié): 一個(gè)音節(jié)叫單音節(jié)。只有一個(gè)音節(jié) 的單詞叫單音節(jié)詞（ mnsyllable ）。比如：take雙音節(jié): 兩個(gè)音節(jié)叫雙音節(jié)。只有兩個(gè)音節(jié)的單詞叫雙音節(jié)詞（ disyllable ）。比如： letter多音節(jié)：包含三個(gè)及三個(gè)以上音節(jié)的單詞是多音節(jié)詞： 比如：vegetable

單詞可以按照音節(jié)來分成這幾種類型：
單音節(jié)詞多數(shù)是重讀音節(jié)，標(biāo)記讀音時(shí)不需要使用重讀符號(hào)。如：gd [ɡud] luck [l?k] man [m?n] cme [k?m] in [in]
雙音節(jié)詞的重音一般落在第一個(gè)音節(jié)上。如：sister ['sist?] 、brther ['br?e?]等。如何劃分音節(jié)：1、在兩個(gè)音節(jié)的相鄰處有兩個(gè)輔音字母時(shí)（r）除外。如： let-ter Eng-lish ， ap-ple。2、在兩個(gè)音節(jié)的相鄰處只有一個(gè)輔音字母時(shí)（輔音字母組合除外，如：ch,ck,sh,th),這種情況要借助字典。
