Just being intelligent (聰明的) desn’t mean smene will be successful. And just because smene is less intelligent desn’t mean that persn will fail. That’s ne take-hme message frm the wrk f peple like Angela Duckwrth, wh wrks at the University f Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Like many ther scientists, Duckwrth wndered what makes ne persn mre successful than anther. When digging deeper, Duckwrth fund that the peple wh perfrmed best shared a quality independent f intelligence. They had what she nw calls grit (毅力). Duckwrth develped a set f questins t test it. She calls it her “grit scale (量表).”
In ne study f peple 25 and lder, she fund that as peple age, they becme mre likely t stick with a prject. She als fund that git increases with educatin. Peple wh finished cllege scred higher n the grit scale than peple wh quit befre graduatin. Peple wh went t graduate schl after cllege scred even higher.
She then did anther study with cllege students. Duckwrth wanted t see hw intelligence and grit influenced perfrmance in schl. S she cmpared scres n cllege-entrance exams, which measure IQ, t schl grades and scres n the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended t have mre grit. That’s nt surprising. Getting gd grades takes bth smarts and hard wrk.
But sme peple cunter that this grit means success. Amng thse peple is Marcus Crede, a prfessr at Iwa State University in Ames. He recently pled the results f 88studies n grit. Tgether, thse studies tested nearly 67, 000 peple. And grit did nt predict success, Crede fund.
Hwever, he thinks grit is very similar t smene’s ability t set gals, wrk tward them and think things thrugh befre acting.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far mre strngly cnnected t schl grades than grit,” Crede says. “We can teach students hw t study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m nt sure we can d that with grit.”
28. What can we knw frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. Intelligence determines success. B. Nt all smart peple will succeed.
C. Duckwrth redesigned a grit scale. D. Grit decides hw intelligent ne might be.
29. What might influence a persn’s grit accrding t Angela Duckwrth’s findings?

30. What des the underlined wrd “cunter” in paragraph 5 mean?

31. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Grit can hardly be taught. B. Grit can be imprved eastly
C. Grit is strngly related t test anxiety. D. Grit has nthing t d with schl grades.

As the extreme heat waves nw affecting parts f Eurpe, Asia and the US make clear, hmes in any area f the wuld badly need t be changed t help deal with a htter climate.
The quickest, simplest slutin is t equip (安裝) air cnditining. But this wuld lead ta huge increase in electricity demand, researchers warn, driving further climate change. “If ur hmes are verheated and the first slutin that we run t is air cnditiners, that is ging t dry up ur energy systems,” said Miranda, a researcher frm Oxfrd University.
A greener slutin wuld be t develp “passive cling” technlgies, which dn’t require large energy inputs. Bertie Ozarisy frm Middle East Technical University fund a special hme built in 2015, Userhuus, had a “severe verheating risk” during the summer. Using cmputer mdels f the huse, he fund that adding a wind catcher was the mst effective fr reducing indr temperatures. Wind catchers get the cler wind frm high abve the grund and direct it int the building, pushing ut the warmer air inside the huse. Hwever, althugh wind catchers culd be easy t fit t new hmes, equipping them is likely t be expensive.
Further research shwed that pening windws at night and pulling dwn shades during the day can lwer indr air temperatures by 14C during a heatwave. “Mst heat in a hme cmes frm tw surces; first, peple and equipment they use, and secnd, slar heat gain thrugh windws.” Says Bertie. “Ht utside air is actually a very small surce.”
“The imprtant thing is t pen up the entire huse at night, t pen the windws as sn as utdr air is cler than indr air, and t leave them pen all night until the next mrning. Clse them nly when the utdr air temperature rises.” he added. Blcking sunlight frm entering the hme is therefre an effective way t keep temperatures under cntrl.
32. What is Miranda’s attitude twards equipping air cnditining?
A. Uncaring. B. Psitive. C. Objective. D. Unfavrable.
33. What might be a disadvantage f a wind catcher?
A. Its high cst. B. Its pr effect.
C. Its ugly design. D. Its equipping prblem.
34. Accrding t Bertie Ozarisy, mst heat in a hme cmes frm __________.
A. ht utside air B. peple’s activities
C. air-cnditining system D. prly-designed windws
35. What can be a suitable title fr the passage?
A. Surces f Heat B. Reasns fr Heatwaves
C. Hw t Keep Hmes Cl D. Hw t Equip Air Cnditiners
