“Frever chemicals” take their name frm the fact that they cntain flurine-carbn bnds (碳氟鍵), and because they last, if nt frever, fr a very lng time. These chemical bnds are incredibly difficult t break dwn, which means that pllutants frm these chemicals build up ver time in ur envirnment. As well as in ur bdies, they've been fund in the sil and in drinking water.
While sme have nw been banned, these chemicals have been used in a wide range f cnsumer prducts. They have a repellent effect (驅(qū)避效應(yīng)) n il and water and s have been used fr stain-prfing furniture and carpets. Frever chemicals have been used t make nn-stick pans and grease-prf (防油脂的) fd packaging. Yu can find them in waterprf clthing. Particular cncern has been raised abut their use in makeups and ther persnal care prducts. These prducts are ften used near mucus membranes (黏膜), like thse in ur eyes and muths, which culd make it easier fr chemicals t be absrbed int ur bdies.
The exact level f risk is uncertain, but studies have suggested links between these cmpunds and cnditins such as cancer, reprductin prblems, develpmental prblems in children, and reduced immunity. Hwever, the level f expsure at which peple becme at risk is nt yet clear. It may be unlikely t cmpletely avid these chemicals, but peple can take steps t reduce their expsure. Using air and water filters (過濾器), as well as reducing the amunt f dust in ur living spaces is ne way t d this. Anther way is t carefully check the ingredients f makeups as well as the materials in carpets and furniture befre buying them.

The shapes and textures (紋理) f quartz grains speak t the prcesses that changed and transprted them. Stanfrd researchers have develped an AI-based tl – SandAI - that can reveal the histry f quartz (石英) sand grains ging back hundreds f millins f years. With SandAI, researchers can tell with high accuracy if wind, rivers, waves, r glacial (冰川的) mvements shaped and depsited grains f sand.
The tl gives researchers a unique windw int the past fr gelgical and archelgical studies, especially fr eras and envirnments where few ther clues, such as fssils, are preserved thrugh time. SandAI’s apprach, called micrtextural analysis, can als help with mdern-day frensic (法學(xué)的) investigatins int illegal sand mining and related issues.“Wrking n sedimentary depsits (沉積物) that haven't been disturbed feels abut as clse as yu can get t being in a time machine - yu' re seeing exactly what was n the surface f Earth, even hundreds f millins f years ag. Sand AI adds anther layer f detail t the infrmatin we can pull frm them,” said Michael Hassn, an assistant prfessr f Earth and planetary sciences Stanfrd University.
Histrically, micrtextural analysis has been dne by hand and eye, using magnifying glasses and micrscpes t attempt t draw inferences abut sand grains’ histries. Mdern science has cnfirmed the apprach, shwing that transprt principles d indeed cnvey telltale characteristes - fr example, grains that traveled farther ften appear mre runded because they’ve had their sharp crners dulled; waves and wind als leave distinctive abrasin (磨損) patterns.
Hwever, traditinal micrtextural analysis is highly subjective, time-cnsuming, and scattersht acrss different studies. Thanks t the new tl, which emplys the pwer f machine learning t deeply examine micrscpic images f sand grains, micrtextural analysis can nw be far mre quantitative, bjective, and ptentially useful acrss a wide range f applicatins. It als analyzes individual sand grains instead f lumping multiple grains int a single categry, ffering a mre cmplete evaluatin.
“Instead f a human ging thrugh and deciding what ne texture is, we are using machine learning t make micrtextural analysis mre bjective and rigrus(嚴(yán)密的),” said Lap?tre, anther researcher frm Stanfrd.
32. What is the functin f SandAI?
A. T help with sand mining and related issues.B. T change and transprt quartz grains.
C. T analyze quartz grains accurately.D. T examine envirnment.
33. What des the underlined wrd “them” in Paragraph 2 refer t?
A. Researchers.B. Investigatins.
C. Sedimentary depsits.D. Gelgical and archelgical studies.
34. What d we knw abut mdern micrtextural analysis?
A. It has been dne using magnifying glasses and micrscpes.
B. It desn't depend n micrscpic images f sand grains.
C. It can be far mre quantitative, bjective and useful.
D. It has been used wrldwide.
35. What des the text mainly talk abut?
A. The applicatin f SandAI.B. Gelgical studies.
C. The research n quartz grains.D. Earth science.
