Althugh fires are still a danger in every majr city tday, they were a much mre serius prblem in earlier centuries. The histric Great Fire f Lndn was a serius example f the damage fire can cause.

There are n accurate recrds f hw many peple died in the fire because the wrst damage happened in pr neighburhds. Unfrtunately the gvernment didn’t recrd the deaths f pr peple in thse early times.
When the fire happened, peple in Lndn were already struggling t survive a large plague(瘟疫)utbreak that had begun in 1665. Lndn’s husing trubles were a majr cause f the prblem. At the time, much f central Lndn cnsisted f clsely packed and prly made wden buildings. This created an unhealthy envirnment because germs travelled freely frm hme t hme. In additin, the buildings were n narrw, dirty streets where peple threw their garbage. Rats were attracted by the garbage, and they brught fleas(跳蚤)—the carriers f the plague. Once peple caught the plague frm flea bites, the disease spread rapidly thrughut the city especially in the cramped central district. It was in these terrible cnditins that the Great Fire raged thrugh Lndn.
Despite the damage, the fire had a psitive effect because it destryed the ld, prly made wden buildings. It als killed mst f the rats and fleas, which slwed the spread f the plague. After the fire, the gvernment rebuilt the damaged areas. Whenever pssible, they used brick r stne. Thus, the new he uses were much mre slid and mre difficult fr rats t enter. Widened streets and imprved garbage cllectin als helped t stp the disease frm spreading frm persn t persn because there was simply mre rm t walk.
