Chances are that yu've heard the phrase "like a mth(飛蛾)t a fire”-and prbably seen it in actin at a night time campfire r barbecue, t.
It turns ut, hwever, this age-ld saying may nt be quite right. Rather than being attracted t light, mths' tendency t fly tward brightness is a behaviral respnse t help them determine which way is up, suggests a new study published tday in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins.
Unlike humans, mst insects dn't have vestibule(前庭的)systems t help them maintain directin in space. "But they d have a system that allws them t really quickly tell what's bright and what's dark, and give them feedback abut the sky s that they can fly stably," Sndhi, the leading researcher, says. "If they mess that up.they start crashing r they g t high and then they lse their speed."
What if the light is spread ver a wide area rather than cming frm a singular pint? The researchers stretched a large white sheet acrss theatre tp and sht a UV light n it. "If the insects were truly 'attractive the light, they shuld fly up tward it," says Sam Fabian, a study c-authr and insect researcher at Imperial Cllege in Lndn. "Instead, the insects flew straight thrugh this illuminated(照明的)passage, flying hw they wuld during the day."
The team then placed the sheet n the grund and shined the light n it, which is when smething truly strange happened:"All these mths flying ver it turned upside dwn and crashed ut f the sky,"Fabian says.
These behavirs suggest that artificial light can cause a mismatch between the insects' sense f which way is up and the true directin. This behaviral natural ability culd spell truble fr insects ppulatins. Satellite data has revealed that the use f artificial light has skyrcketed ver the past decade, with the wrld getting 2 percent brighter each year. Depending n hw lights are used, their shine culd catch insects in a tiring rbit, r send them falling t their death.
32.Why is the ld saying mentined at the beginning?
A.T illustrate a cmmn sense. B.T lead a new thery.
C.T ppularize a cmplex phrase. D.T intrduce
33.Hw d the insects cnfirm their directin when flying?
A.By flying ver the tree tps. B.By keeping their speed stable.
C.By appraching the psitin f light. D.By distinguishing the bright and dark
34.What d paragraph 4 and 5 mainly fcus n?
A.Detailed accunt f the research prcess.
B.Simple clarificatin f the research results.
C.Ptential applicatin f the research findings.
D.Further explanatin f the research cnclusin.
35.What is the pssible impact f artificial light n insects?
A.It declines their chances f survival.
B.It imprves their ability t shine at night.
C.It familiarizes insects with their flight rbit.
D.It assists insects t maintain their sense f directin.
