Why I Dn’t Spare “Spare Change”
“Pr but hnest.” “The deserving (值得幫助的) pr.” These wrds always cme t my mind when I think f “the pr.” But I als think f peple wh, perhaps thrugh alchl (酒) r drugs, have ruined nt nly their wn lives but als the lives f thers in rder t give way t their wn pleasure. Perhaps alchlism and drug addictin (上癮) really are “diseases,” as many peple say, but my wn feeling --- based. Of curse, nt n any serius study --- is that mst alchlics and drug addicts belng t the “undeserving pr.” And that is largely why I dn’t give spare change t beggars.
But surely amng the street peple there are als sme wh can rightly be called “deserving.” Deserving what? My spare change? Or simply the gvernment’s assistance? It happens that I have been brught up t believe that it is prper t make cntributins t charity (慈善機(jī)構(gòu)), but if I give sme change t a beggar, am I making a cntributin t charity and thereby helping smene, r, am I perhaps simply encuraging smene nt t get help? Or, maybe even wrse, am I supprting a cheat?
If ne believes in the value f private charity, ne can either give t needy peple r t charitable rganizatins. In giving t a beggar ne may indeed be helping a persn wh badly needs help, but ne cannt be certain that ne is giving t a needy persn. In giving t an rganizatin, n the ther hand, ne can feel that ne’s mney is likely t be used wisely. True, facing a beggar ne may feel that this particular unfrtunate persn needs help at this mment --- a cup f cffee r a sandwich --- and the need will nt be met unless I put my hand in my pcket right nw. But I have cme t think that the beggars whm I meet can get alng withut my spare change, and indeed perhaps they are actually better ff fr nt having mney t buy alchl r drugs.

While parents, particularly mthers, have always been attached t their infants (嬰兒), scietal cnditins frequently made this attachment difficult t maintain (保持). A study published in September suggests there is a surprising way t get peple t avid unhealthy fds: change their memries. Lftus says there’s nthing t stp parents frm trying it with their verweight children. “I say, wake up --- parents have been lying abut Father Christmas fr years, and nbdy seems t mind.
