When Sarah Lee was a child, she lved t watch the birds in her backyard and wnder hw they culd fly s effrtlessly. As she grew lder, Sarah became interested in the science behind flight and decided t study aerspace engineering in cllege.
After graduatin, Sarah began wrking fr a cmpany that designed airplanes. Hwever, she sn realized that the traditinal methds f airplane design were nt always efficient r sustainable. She began t wnder if there was a way t design airplanes that mimicked the natural wrld.
Sarah started t study birds and insects, bserving hw they were able t fly with such grace and efficiency. She asked questins like: Hw d birds adjust their wings t different wind cnditins? Hw d insects use their wings t hver in place?
With this knwledge, Sarah began t design airplanes that incrprated bimimicry, r the imitatin f nature. She created wings that culd adjust their shape based n wind cnditins, just like a bird’s wings. She als designed planes that culd hver in place, like a dragnfly.
Sarah’s designs were a hit. Her cmpany began t prduce airplanes that were mre efficient and sustainable than ever befre. They used less fuel and emitted fewer pllutants int the air.
Sarah nw travels arund the wrld, giving talks n the benefits f bimimicry in engineering. “Nature has been slving prblems fr millins f years,” she says. “We can learn a lt frm the natural wrld if we just take the time t bserve and ask questins.”

It’s n secret that inhaling (吸入) smke is bad fr yur lungs. But nw, scientists are suggesting smke may als carry and spread infectius diseases. The thery, published in Science Magazine, is based n research that fund wildfire smke is crwded with thusands f species f micrrganisms. Sme f these micrrganisms, including bacteria and fungal spres, are knwn t cause disease.
The new research suggests that when a wildfire burns plant r animal matter and disturbs sils, it expses thusands f species f bacteria and fungi that therwise might nt easily becme airbrne (空氣傳播的). Yu might think the high heat frm fire wuld kill these rganisms, but ne study mentined in the article fund that sme bacteria even multiply pst-fire. Scientists say the rganisms attach t smke particles, allwing them t travel thusands f miles acrss cntinents.
Dr. Peter Chen, directr f the Divisin f Pulmnary and Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Ls Angeles, is interested in the thery but smewhat skeptical that the micrrganisms in smke wuld actually cause infectins. Many bacteria and fungi dn’t cause lung infectins, says Chen, but it’s certainly pssible that a significant amunt culd wrsen symptms in smene with a preexisting lung cnditin. “I always thught it was the particles in smke that were causing these issues,” says Chen. “But when I read this, I started thinking: Culd it be the micrrganisms that are als wrsening existing illnesses?”
Whether the micrrganisms in smke actually cause infectin r simply wrsen ptential respiratry (呼吸的) issues, the article raises a new health threat that is “certainly alarming”, says Kelsey Jack, an assciate prfessr f envirnmental and develpment ecnmics. This is especially true fr lwer-incme ppulatins, Jack says, because peple with fewer means are ften mre expsed t the envirnment. If smke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the peple wh wrk utside, r wh have t g t the ffice n ft r by bike will inhale mre smke than thse wh drive.
But until mre research is dne, Chen says the best thing peple can d is just fllw existing recmmendatins when air quality is pr—including staying indrs, keeping windws and drs clsed, using HEPA filters and running air cnditining.
8. What can we knw abut the micrrganisms frm paragraph 2?
A. They culd be killed by high heat.
B. They culd reprduce in large numbers after fires.
C. They culd pssibly travel thrugh air by themselves.

9. Hw d mst micrrganisms affect peple accrding t Dr. Peter Chen?
A. They might wrsen lung diseases.B. They will cause lung infectins.
C. They will destry living envirnments.D. They might damage respiratry systems.
10. Why are lw-incme peple suffering mre than thers?
A. They live in pr areas.
B. They drive t and frm wrk.
C. They have suffered frm lung disease.
D. They are expsed t plluted air mre frequently.
11. What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
A. Results f the new research.
B Suggestins n dealing with pr air quality.
C. Disagreements between the authr and Chen.
D. Benefits f preventing smke frm plluting the air.

Three minutes f lking at red light nce a week may help ur eyesight, new research suggests. The findings shw that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment fr declines in clr visin as we get lder.
Last year, researchers frm University Cllege Lndn did a study n red light therapy (療法). 24 healthy vlunteers, aged between 28 and 72, were asked t lk at red light fr three minutes every day fr tw weeks. Tests later fund that the eyesight f peple ver the age f 40 imprved.
T test the pssible weak pints f their therapy, they did a new study this year. Instead f using the light every day, they used it nce a week. The new study included 20 vlunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy visin. Sme received red light therapy in the mrning, and thers received it in the afternn. They were then tested n their clr visin up t a week later.
On the whle, thse wh gt the treatment in the mrning shwed a 17% imprvement in their clr visin, even a week later. Thse wh gt the treatment in the afternn did nt have any imprvement.
“We’ve fund that ne single expsure (暴露) t red light in the mrning can greatly imprve declining visin,” said lead authr Glen Jeffrey.
The findings d supprt their earlier wrk, and they might make the treatment mre practicable, since a nce-weekly treatment is easier t stick t than a daily ne. But the team’s prmising results are still drawn n small numbers f healthy vlunteers. Larger studies wuld be needed t shw the benefits f red light therapy.
“In the near future, a nce-a-week three-minute expsure t deep red light culd be dne while making a cffee r listening t a sng, and such a simple thing culd change eye care and visin arund the wrld,” Jeffrey said.
Given its lw cst (as little as $15) per device, and simplicity, the team is excited abut the future f their therapy.
12. What plays a key rle in red light therapy?
A. The time f day fr treatment.
B. The device used in the treatment.
C. The time that ne treatment lasts.
D. The number f treatments received.
13. What makes it necessary t imprve the study?
A. The age f the vlunteers.
B. The number f the vlunteers.
C. The pr visin f the vlunteers.
D. The health cnditin f the vlunteers.
14. What is Jeffrey’s attitude twards the future f the therapy?
A. Unclear.B. Dubtful.C. Tlerant.D. Hpeful.
15. What is the purpse f this text?
A. T state the imprtance f eye care.
B. T explain the value f deep red light.
C. T intrduce a way t fight visin decline.
D. T encurage aged peple t prtect their eyesight.
