I wanted t stp the Sahara Desert in its tracks.“ A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity f drughts have led t an estimated 75 per cent f Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertificatin.

The Rbt Avatar Thermal-Enhanced system, r RAVE, is the creatin f a team led by Petitt, a scientist at Gallaudet University. The learning begins when the rbt’s thermal(熱力的)camera, which is fcused n the baby’s face, senses small changes in his bdy temperature, which is assciated with awareness. This, cmbined with the baby’s facial expressin, causes the rbt t turn its head and guide the baby’s attentin t a cmputer screen.
Here, a human avatar starts t cmmunicate with the baby much like a parent wuld. Fr example, if the baby pints twards the screen, the avatar might respnd, “Are yu pinting t me?” and fllw that up with a fairy tale, r sme necessary scial cmmunicatin, all in sign language. The “cnversatin” cntinues until the kid lses interest.
The team, wh have been testing the system fr three years, fund that babies began t mve their hands in a way similar t sign language after interacting with RAVE fr just a few minutes. T much time spent n gaming smartphnes and watching televisin is linked t heightened levels and diagnses (診斷) f anxiety r depressin in children as yung as age 2, accrding t a new study.

The study prvides further evidence that the American Academy f Pediatrics’ (AAP) established screen time limits — ne hur per day fr thse aged 2 t 5, with a fcus n high-quality prgrams — are valid (有效的), Twenge said. The study als suggests that similar limits — perhaps t tw hurs a day-shuld be applied t schl-aged children and adlescents, said Twenge.
In terms f preventin, establishing pssible causes and utcmes f lw psychlgical well-being is especially imprtant fr child and adlescent ppulatins. “Half f mental health prblems develp by adlescence,” Twenge and Campbell wrte in their paper.
