The Chinese paddlefish(白鱘)—ne f the wrld's largest freshwater fish—has been annunced extinct. Scientists say the paddlefish, als called the Chinese swrdfish, is believed t have a lineage dating back at least 34 millin years. With its lng nse and muth, the paddlefish culd grw as lng as seven meters.
But a research paper recently published in Science f the Ttal. Envirnment reprted the paddlefish was nw extinct. The researchers include scientists frm the Chinese Academy f Fishery Sciences, Britain's University f Kent and the University f Suth Bhemia in the Czech Republic.
The paper says the paddlefish was annunced extinct fr tw reasns. It said that the fish was nt able t survive because f widespread verfishing and damage t its native envirnment in the Yangtze River.
Researchers discvered 332 different species f fish in the Yangtze River in 2017 and 2018. But they did nt find a single Chinese paddlefish. They guessed the fish disappeared between 2005 and 2010. The extinctin f the Chinese paddlefish was “a huge lss” t nature.
Pan Wenjing is a frest and cean expert with Greenpeace East Asia. “The eclgy f the Yangtze River is almst in ruins due t human activity in past decades” Pan said. She stressed that China had taken measures t imprve the Yangtze's envirnment, including a 10-year ban(禁令)n fishing.
