At a high schl in Indiana, a grup f students are wrking n ideas t deal with climate change. One student, Murphy, suggests a large cntainer filled with water that wuld heat up and prduce steam (蒸汽) t pwer a car. Althugh the idea has limitatins, climate scientist Ben Kravitz appreciates it, saying that steam pwer, while ld, still wrks.
Kravitz develped a lessn with Paul Gddard, a research scientist, and Kirstin Milks, a high schl science teacher. The lessn encurages students t think creatively abut reducing pllutin and slving glbal warming. Milks believes it’s imprtant fr students t nt nly understand the dangers f climate change but als feel cnfident t cme up with slutins. She says, “These students will lead the future climate wrk.”
The lessn cvers the basics f climate change, explaining that burning cal, il, and gas gives ff carbn dixide (CO2), the main cause f glbal warming. Kravitz stresses that reducing greenhuse gas emissins (is the nly lasting slutin, but new technlgies, such as wind and slar energy, are needed t make prgress.
In the meantime, Kravitz and ther scientists are explring ways, such as climate engineering, t reduce the planet’s temperature. Climate engineering includes techniques like reflecting sunlight back int space r remving CO2 frm the atmsphere. Hwever, these ways cme with risks, such as changing weather systems and rainfall patterns, leading t lss f bidiversity and impacting agriculture. Students are encuraged t think abut such challenges when develping their ideas.
Thrugh this lessn, Milks hpes t develp in students bth awareness and ptimism (樂(lè)觀), shwing them that they can play a rle in slving glbal issues.
24. What is Murphy’s idea?
A. Design a special car.B. Pwer cars with steam.
C. Discver new energy.D. Make a drinking machine.
25. Why was this lessn develped?
A. T equip students fr climate actin.B. T discuss the benefits f using slar energy.
C. T encurage students t stp using cal and gas.D. T explain climate change affects weather systems.
26. What can we knw abut climate engineering?
A. It can absrb the sunlight.B. It can add CO2 t the atmsphere.
C. It may enrich the bidiversity.D. It may have effects n agriculture.
27. What is a suitable title fr the passage?
A. The challenges f climate engineering.B. Students’ cntributins t steam pwer.
C. The develpment f climate-related technlgies.D. Students’ creative ideas fr a better climate future.

Have yu ever been in a situatin where yu needed t d well but failed because f the pressure? Yu’re nt alne. Steven Chase, a scientist at Carnegie Melln University, studied what culd happen in the brain under pressure. The experiments shw that pressure is linked t a drp in activity in the brain area that prepares fr mvement, just as athletes fail under stress.
The team first experimented with certain mnkeys and set up a cmputer task fr them. The mnkeys mved a cursr (光標(biāo)) n a screen t get rewards ranging frm small t medium, large, r even a rare and big “jackpt” which was meant t create high-pressure situatins, similar t what athletes face in critical mments. T see the changes in brain activity, the researchers put a small chip (芯片) int the mnkeys’ mtr crtex, the part f the brain that cntrls mvement. During jackpt setting, the activity f the neurns (神經(jīng)元) that help in mvement planning decreased. This drp in such activity made the mnkeys less prepared, leading t wrse perfrmance.
The study shwed a cmplex relatinship between rewards and perfrmance. The team have fund that while small rewards can imprve perfrmance, t many rewards can actually make it wrse. This is knwn as the “neural-bias hypthesis,” which says that t much pressure can destry the brain’s best functin. The research als lked int why mtr preparatin decreased under high pressure. It suggested that as the reward gt bigger, the brain’s activity reached a peak and then started t decline.
In cnclusin, understanding why peple and animals fail under pressure can help us develp better ways t manage stressful situatins and perfrm better when it matters mst.
28. Why was the “jackpt” reward used in the experiment?
A. T create high-pressure situatins.B. T train the prblem-slving skills.
C. T imprve mnkeys’ intelligence.D. T prvide extra fd fr mnkeys.
29. Hw did the researchers measure brain activity in mnkeys?
A. By bserving their hbbies.B. By using a chip put in the brain.
C. By giving them similar rewards.D. By mnitring their heart rate.
30. What des the “neural-bias hypthesis” suggest?
A. Rewards hardly affect brain functin.B. Mnkeys perfrm better under n pressure.
C. Small rewards seldm imprve perfrmance.D. T many rewards can cause bad perfrmance.
31. What des the study fcus n?
A. Appraches t dealing with great stress.B. Hw rewards impact brain develpment.
C. Links f pressure t perfrmance failure.D. Hw gd athletes face their challenges.

As fr the new type f glasses, we pay special attentin t hw the glasses are made. Cmpanies that care abut the envirnment will make sure their glasses last a lng time, frm when they start making them t when they’re n lnger needed. This means they use materials that cme frm renewable surces rather than limit themselves t lcal materials. Fr example, they might use wd frm frests that are managed well r recycled materials. They als use energy-saving machines and try t reduce waste. In a wrd, they make sure that the glasses are made in a respnsible way. T ur custmers, green glasses are the best ptin fr us t prtect ur eyes and the planet at the same time. By chsing these glasses, we’re helping the planet and making a psitive change.
The future f glasses is lking bright! The way glasses are made is changing, with green materials and methds. As mre peple becme interested in green prducts and technlgy imprves, there will be mre green chices available. Chse green glasses that lk great and help the planet. Be part f the change and see the future in a better way.
32. What des the underlined wrd “sustainable” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A. Limited.B. Ec-friendly.C. Expensive.D. Old-fashined.

On a cld raining evening, I was in the ward (病房) searching fr the final female patient, Mrs. Green, t cmplete my paper. Hlding a patient questinnaire, I walked twards her rm. I didn’t see any dctrs r nurses; the ward was quiet. With the dim light, I culd see heavy raindrps thrugh the windw.
She was lying n bed, still very weak, with n relatives arund. I sat dwn n a chair next t her bed, and began t intrduce myself plitely. Luckily, she agreed with a nd. Her husband died a year ag and she was the nly breadwinner f her family as a cleaner.
I had n idea hw t cmfrt her. Lking int her eyes, I tried my best t remember the cmmunicatin skills that I had learned earlier. But still my mind was blank. I regretted nt paying mre attentin. Can yu remember any time when yu were really mad, sad r shamed? I certainly can. One was when I applied fr a curse I really wanted t d. I put a lt f effrt int it. I spent a lt f time and energy, and then I was turned dwn. That was really bad fr me and I was sad and angry. T make things wrse, I had tld all my friends that I wuld certainly be accepted fr the curse, s it was really difficult t tell them that I had been turned dwn. I tried t deal with it by making jkes abut it and lking as if I didn’t care, but that just made me feel even wrse. I didn’t knw what t d. It wuldn’t be fair t shut at my family r hit things, althugh that was what I felt like ding. Finally, my dad said I shuld write dwn my feelings. That helped me a lt, but I dn’t think it is the perfect slutin. I think the best thing t d is t talk hnestly t thers abut the way yu feel.Dear Mike,
I hpe yu’re ding well! There’s s much t share abut my high schl life I just started.
Best wishes!
Yurs,
Li Hua
A few days later, I returned t see Mrs. Green.
