O'Plerou Grebet is a 22-year-old graphic design student in C?te d'Ivoire, Africa. Everywhere he looks, he sees signs of Western influence — from the glass skyscrapers and malls lining the streets in his home city to the way his fellows speak and dress. “We are living like we’re Western people,” he says. That even applies to the keyboard culture — when his friends text using the messaging apps, they especially love to use the “tears of joy” face emoji (表情符號). So he used his design skills to create digital stickers that show what he thinks is missing: symbols of history, life and culture in C?te d'Ivoire and neighboring countries.
In 2018, he released a free pack of over 360 stickers in a mobile app called "Zouzoukwa”, which means "image" in the local Bété language. Available on Android and iOS, it now has over 120,000 downloads. It's more impressive than other emoji apps, with the feature of connecting to the realities of Africans using it. “ It would make their jokes even livelier,” says Grebet. The stickers include traditional masks, African instruments like the djembe drum and people dressed in a variety of prints and clothing that can reflect local tradition.
Some of his favorite designs are a series of facial expressions commonly used in his area, but not available as standardized emojis. There’s a woman with lips pursed, giving some serious side-eye—a sign you can use when your friend keeps you waiting long for no reason. It's common in C?te d'Ivoire and also translates across cultures, Grebet says.
The next step, Grebet says, is to try and get some of his designs into the official emoji set, where they’d reach more than 2 billion people worldwide, as usable ones on smartphones everywhere. Grebet also plans to keep traveling and expanding his experiences and his sticker pack. His designs so far are drawn from his experience and research into a few African countries.
24. How does Grebet find their local culture according to paragraph 1?
A. It's very similar to Western culture. B. It's absent in many aspects of their life.
C. It's full of inspirational ideas and symbols. D. It's influential in local people's lifestyle.
25. What's Zouzoukwa's advantage over other emoji apps?
A. It provides a better source of jokes. B. It's designed based on daily items.
C. It's related more closely to the locals. D. It applies to both Android and iOS.
26. Which feeling does the woman emoji mentioned in paragraph 3 convey?
A. Curiosity. B. Sorrow. C. Annoyance. D. Disappointment.
27. What will Grebet probably do next?
A. Be on tour to advocate his designs. B. Create an official emoji set.
C. Research into more African countries. D. Standardize some of his emojis.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. C 27. D

Scientists have developed a new type of smart bandage (繃帶) that can signal the type of bacterial (細菌的) infection it’s protecting, just like a traffic light, as well as release the right type of drugs on demand. The traffic light system works just like this: Green means no bacteria or a low concentration of bacteria, yellow means drug-sensitive (DS) bacteria responsive to standard antibiotics (抗生素) and causes antibiotic release, and red means drug-resistant (DR) bacteria that need extra help to be wiped out.
In testing the bandage on mice, the research team was able to successfully treat both DS and DR infections using the new method. However, the common methods of sensing resistance are limited by time, the requirement for professional personnel, and expensive instruments. Moreover, the abuse of antibiotics causes the accelerated process of bacterial resistance.
It’s easy to see how a simple bandage and light could overcome some of these limitations. Treatment doesn’t have to wait for a doctor to make a diagnosis, and the bandage can get the right sort of drugs applied at the earliest opportunity. What’s more, the person wearing the bandage gets real-time feedback on what’s happening with the infection, if there’s an infection at all. The researchers say it offers numerous benefits over existing treatments that make use of light, including photodynamic therapy or PDT.
We’ve been seeing quite a few upgrades to the traditional bandage in recent years, thanks to advances in science — like the nanofiber mesh that attracts bacteria and draws some of it out, speeding up the healing process. Then there’s the novel bandage for treating burns, which stops bacteria from multiplying and lowers the risk of infection.
The more work that a bandage can do while it’s protecting a wound, the better. Efforts to improve bandages continue and now we've got a bandage that not only releases antibiotics, but also tells the patient exactly what’s going on too.
28. What is the smart bandage mainly designed to do?
A. Avoid the use of antibiotics. B. Clear out harmful bacteria.
C. Detect bacterial infections. D. Increase treatment options.
29. What is the advantage of the smart bandage?
A. It saves much time and cost. B. It removes the risk of infection.
C. It prevents the bacterial resistance. D. It improves doctor-patient relationship.
30. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Traditional bandages are out of use now.
B. More smart bandages will be developed.
C. Progress in science calls for more research.
D. People are urged to study medical science.
31. What does the text focus on?
A. A successful test on mice. B. A colour-changing bandage.
C. Sensing drug-resistant bacteria. D. Preventing abuse of antibiotics.

With greater climate catastrophe (氣候突變) on Earth, it is natural for us to make every effort to stop the potential floods, snowstorms, and alarming reports from scientists. For many of us (myself included), part of that means running out to buy reusable straws, organic cleaners, and packaging-free products.
However, before you are delighted at “green” purchases, take a second to consider the results of a new study from Arizona University. By comparing the shopping habits, mental health and environmental impact of young people, the researchers reconfirmed a principle: Buying less beats buying “green” stuff without effort. And that is true whether you are looking at the impact that your purchases have on the Earth or on your own happiness.
It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet. After all, every new item a factory yields requires some resources to produce. Take plastic bag bans for instance. If your city is getting rid of single-use shopping bags, it can be attractive to pay for a fashionable organic cotton bag hanging in the check-out line of your local supermarket. However, experts insist that growing cotton is actually no better for the Earth than producing the conventional plastic bags. Then what is your best bet for carrying your groceries if you care about sustainability? Any bag you already own.
It is not just the Earth that will be happier if you buy less. You will feel more contented too, according to the new study. “People believe that they might well be self-satisfied about becoming environmentally conscious through ‘green’ buying patterns, but it doesn’t seem to be that way”, said the lead researcher Sabrina Helm. “Reduced consumption has effects on increased well-being, but we don’t see that with ‘green’ consumption.”
“Owning every new ‘green’ product on the market might make you feel contented, but if you relieve yourself of that burden of ownership, most people report feeling a lot better,” said Helm.
32. Why does the writer mention “green” shopping habits?
A. To call on a green lifestyle. B. To praise people’s green efforts.
C. To introduce a social trend. D. To present a half true “green” truth.
33. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The plastic bag bans are of no effect. B. Using any bag you have is the best bet.
C. Reduced consumption is better for the Earth. D. Growing cotton is far worse for the Earth.
34. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The sense of achievement. B. The sense of happiness.
C. The sense of relief. D. The sense of security.
35. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Less is More B. The Greener, The Happier
C. Happiness Guarantee D. What Are Green Products?

【導語】這是一篇說明文。主要介紹了無論是對地球的影響還是對自己的幸福感而言,減少消費比綠色消費更好。
【32題詳解】
推理判斷題。由第一段中的“For many of us (myself included), part of that means running out to buy reusable straws, organic cleaners, and packaging-free products. (對我們許多人(包括我自己)來說,這部分意味著要去買可重復使用的吸管、有機清潔劑和無包裝產(chǎn)品)”和第二段中的“By comparing the shopping habits, mental health and environmental impact of young people, the researchers reconfirmed a principle: Buying less beats buying “green” stuff without effort. (通過比較年輕人的購物習慣、心理健康和環(huán)境影響,研究人員再次確認了一個原則:少買比不費力地買“綠色”東西要好)”可知,研究人員認為“少買”比“不費力地買‘綠色’東西要好”(說明綠色購物并不好),可得出作者提到綠色購物習慣是為了呈現(xiàn)一種不太正確的綠色理念。故選D項。
【33題詳解】

【35題詳解】
主旨大意題。由第二段中的“By comparing the shopping habits, mental health and environmental impact of young people, the researchers reconfirmed a principle: Buying less beats buying “green” stuff without effort. (通過比較年輕人的購物習慣、心理健康和環(huán)境影響,研究人員再次確認了一個原則:少買比不費力地買“綠色”東西要好。無論你是在看你的購買對地球的影響,還是對你自己的幸福感的影響,這都是事實)”,第三段主題句“It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet. (簡單地減少消費對地球更好,這不應該讓人感到震驚)”和第四段中的“It is not just the Earth that will be happier if you buy less. You will feel more contented too, according to the new study. (如果你減少購買,不僅地球會更幸福。根據(jù)這項新研究,你也會感到更滿足)”可知,文章主要介紹了無論是對地球的影響還是對自己的幸福感而言,減少消費比綠色消費更好,所以“少即是多”可以作為文章標題。故選A項。

【答案】范文
Be A Lifelong Reader
Hello, everyone! I am Li Hua, an enthusiastic reader.
It is a great shame that students nowadays have so little time for leisure reading as most of them are burdened with huge academic pressure. This invariably leads to their narrow scope of reading as well as highly restricted reading time.
As a veteran book lover, I will, no matter how busy I am, squeeze at least 15 minutes to read. Through reading, I am transported back to different dynasties and countries, enjoying a totally different lifestyle and meeting people I would never meet in real life. In a sense, reading provides me a safe harbor where I can escape from worries in real life, rest my soul and immediately get recharged.
Therefore, I would like to inspire every one of you to join me in pursuing the habit of lifelong reading, which I believe will benefit you on all fronts.

Sandy and Jane came to see the jobo tree on the hilltop again. Jobos were their favorite fruit, but the tree belonged to a lady who lived in the house by the hill. They heard she was difficult, but that sometimes she would give fruit in return for an errand(差使)
The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door. An elderly woman with a fierce look answered, staring down at the girls. “We heard …”said Sandy, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.”
The lady raised one eyebrow, then went into the kitchen and took two baskets. She pushed them into the girls’ hands.“Go fill these with jobos, and come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and filled the baskets with the ripest jobos. Back at the house, the lady filled a bag with rice and handed it to Sandy. “Take this bag and one basket of jobos to the Brown family. And ask them for the payment,” the lady added with a tight smile.“If you return without the payment, you won’t get the fruit.”
The girls struggled all the way with the bag and the basket. When they were there, Mrs. Brown answered the door. Inside on the floor were three little children, each painting something on papers.
Mr. Brown was lying sick in bed.Times were hard.
The girls handed her the food.“This is from the lady with the jobo tree, ” said Sandy.
“She asked for the payment, too.”Jane said awkwardly.
“The payment! The payment!” The children repeated, waving the paper in their hands happily.
Sandy and Jane looked at each other strangely. With a smile, Mrs. Brown handed Sandy a large sealed(密封的)envelope so full that it was almost starting to break open. The girls said goodbye and left quickly. “I wonder,” Sandy murmured, “whether Mrs. Brown can afford to pay for that food.”

Worried, the two girls discussed what was in the envelope as they walked back. Tapping her chin, Sandy murmured, “If it’s money, that’s a great deal! If it’s not, what could it be?” Jane, lost in thought, didn’t reply at once. She placed her palms on envelope, reflected on the family and suddenly she claimed, “Paintings! It must be the girls’ paintings! After she explained to Sandy, they arrived at the old lady’s. Awkwardly, Jane handed the lady the envelope with trembling hands.
The lady opened the envelope, took out a pile of papers and smiled. On the papers were colorful drawings from the children. At this scene, Sandy and Jane looked at each other and smiled. Then, the girls gained their payment- a full basket of ripe jobos. For them, it turned out that their errand not only gained them their favorite fruit, but also a sweet taste of getting payment by their hard work. When they took a bite, the juice was as sweet as the feeling inside their heart.
