Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED Preparation
Task
The Adult Basic Education Department serves a huge population of earners. Our task is to teach basic skills and help learners to get more knowledge to function effectively as a family member, citizen, worker, and lifelong learner in a changing world.
Description
ABE is a non-credit program of self-improvement designed to improve basic skills for students who are of different educational levels. Developments of reading, writing, and maths skills are paid special attention to, as well as life skills, employ-ability, and technology. Students without high school diplomas also have opportunities to prepare for the GED exams in the five subject areas; writing, social studies, science, literature, and maths.
Prerequisites
ABE classes are open to anyone 18 or over who desires to improve basic reading, writing, and maths skills at the precollege level. Students who are 16 or 17 must first obtain an official release from high school before attending class. To be accepted, students must attend an Educational Planning Session. During the Educational Planning Session students will be given an overview of the ABE programs as well as PCC polities, fees, etc. Students will also have their reading, writing, and maths abilities assessed during the Educational Planning Session. The results of their assessments will help the teachers develop individual programs of study for students to guide them toward their personal goals. Students needing special help must get in touch with the Office for Students with Disabilities (503-977-4341) at least two weeks before the session is held.

Just approximately 50 years ago, needing money to support family — my novels weren’t bestsellers — I had the idea of taking the longest train trip imaginable and writing a travel book about it.
The trip would be improvisational — no credit card, no idea where I’d be staying, nor any idea of how long this trip would take. Never had I written a travel book, though I’d read many of them. My favorites were those giving a vivid and detailed description of a difficult and unpleasant experience, with ups and downs. But I hoped my trip wouldn’t be that, despite the fact that it was obviously an adventure.
I set off with one small bag containing clothes, a map of Asia, and some travelers’ cheques, I made it to Mashhad, travelled by bus through Afghanistan and rode the rails again. Sometimes threatened, now and then tired, occasionally laying up with food poisoning, I had a narrow escape — all of these vivid details for my story.
I came across an Indian in Afghanistan who said I should pay a visit to him in Kanpur, and he gave me his address: “I live in Railway Bazaar,” as a consequence of which I had my title early on The Great Railway Bazaar on my return in 1974, appearing the following year to go viral and sell well — and it’s still in print, in many languages. A few years later, an idea flooding into my mind, I took a similar trip, mostly by train, from my home in Boston to Patagonia, and wrote about it in The Old Patagonian Express.
That’s the past. Nothing is the same now. All such trips are unique and unrepeatable. It’s not just that the steam trains of Asia are gone. Much of the peace and order is gone. Who’d risk an Iranian train now or take a bus through Afghanistan? All travel books are out of fashion, but they preserve something of the past that would otherwise be lost.
8.What does the underlined word “improvisational” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Impressive. B.Unprepared. C.Interesting. D.Unforgettable.
9.Which word can best describe the author’s trip?
A.Exhausting. B.Adventurous. C.Frightening. D.Frustrating.
10.What gave the author inspiration for the title The Great Railway Bazaar?
A.The Indian friend he met. B.The train rides he experienced.
C.The details for his narrative. D.The idea of taking a similar trip.
11.What did the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.His travel books are outdated.
B.Journey by train is not popular.
C.His travel books conserve what may be lost.
D.He is unwilling to take the train or bus to travel.

“City Cycling USA: Los Angeles,” a pocket-sized tour guide to seeing Los Angeles on two wheels, is seemingly for visitors; for locals, its series of bike-friendly paths and itineraries (行程) are a road-map to becoming tourists in their own city again.
“City Cycling” explores five neighborhoods in the Westside and Eastside and generally north of the 10 and south of the 101. Itineraries fit the period of a day, beginning with spots for coffee, walking along museums and shops, and finishing off with recommendations of where to buy a well-deserved drink. Published by Thames and Hudson in association with London cycling brand Rapha Racing, the guidebook is among the first U.S. sections — alongside New York, Chicago and San Francisco — in a series launched in 2013 with biking tours of eight European cities.
Greatest hits such as the Bradbury Building and Echo Park Lake are included in the neighborhood tours, with plenty of fashionable places for where to eat — Eggslut, Pine & Crane and Gjusta. The guide is a reminder of how crowdedly packed each enclave (飛地) of L.A.is with unusual destinations, the large number of places to explore within a few square mile radius (半徑), easily done once we step out of the car.
Los Angeles’ famously pleasant weather makes it an ideal city for exploring by bike; neighborhoods have different styles. While the car still plays an important role, cycling culture, like CicLAvia, already has full support, and is prepared to grow with the implementation (實(shí)施) of Mobility Plan 2035, which aims to make the city more bike friendly. “City Cycling USA: Los Angeles” is a start.
12.Who is City Cycling USA: Los Angeles really intended for?
A.Visitors on bikes. B.Locals on bikes.
C.Tourist on bikes D.Bicyclists
13.Where does each itinerary begin and end?
A.Where there is a café. B.Where drink can be bought easily.
C.Where it is convenient for tourists on bikes. D.Where there are museums and shops.
14.What are Eggslut, Pine & Crane and Gjusta used for?
A.Places where you can eat.
B.Destinations you can reach within a day.
C.Guides to a enclave of L.A.crowded with unusual destinations.
D.Places where you can see the Bradbury Building and Echo Park Lake.
15.Why is Los Angeles fit to explore by bike?
A.Because it is bike friendly. B.Because of cycling culture.
C.Because of Mobility Plan 2035. D.Because of its pleasant weather.

第二節(jié)(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
School volunteers don’t get paid money, but sometimes we receive special gifts. One morning, just before Christmas vacation,I was selling tickets to our grade school’s lastevening performance of The Nutcracker.
One of my customers that day was a parent. “I think it’s awful that I have to pay to see my own child perform,”she announced, yanking(猛扯)a wallet from her purse.
“The school asks for a voluntary donation to help pay for scenery and costumes,”I explained,“but no one has to pay. You’re welcome to all the tickets you need. ”
“Oh,I’ll pay,”she said unhappily. “Two adults and a child. ”She plunked down(猛地放下) a ten-dollar bill. I gave her the change and her tickets. She stepped aside, holding her purse. That’s when the boy waiting behind her emptied a pocketful of change onto the table.
“How many tickets?”I asked.
“I don’t need tickets,”he said. “I’m paying. ”He pushed the coins across the table. “But you’ll need tickets to see the show tonight. ”
He shook his head. “I’ve already seen the show. ”
I pushed the pile of nickels, dimes, and quarters back. “You don’t have to pay to sce theshow with your class,”l told him. “That’s free. ”
“No,”the boy insisted. “I saw it last night. My brother and I arrived late. We couldn’t find anyone to buy tickets from,so we just walked in. ”
Lots of people in that crowd had probably “just walked in”. The few volunteers present couldn’t check everyone for a ticket. Anyway,it ‘s OK. As I’d told the parent ahead of this boy ,the donation was voluntary.
He pushed his money back to me. “I’m paying now,for last night,”he said, I knew this boy and his brother must have squeezed into the back of that crowd. And being late to the hall, they couldn’t possibly have seen the whole show. I hated to take his money. A pile of coins in a kid’s hand is usually carefully saved allowance money.

47.One possible version:
So I decided to make some efforts to persuade him to give up paying. “If the ticket table was closed when you got there, you couldn’t pay,” I reasoned. “Nobody knows the difference,” I assured him. “Don’t worry about it” “Thinking the matter was settled, I started to push the coins back. He put his hand on mine.” I know the difference. For a moment our hands bridged the money. Then I spoke, “Two tickets cost two dollars. The pile of coins added up to the correct amount. Thank you,” I said. The boy smiled, turned away and was gone.
Our conversation somewhat affected the woman who had complained about buying tickets. “Excuse me,” I looked up, surprised to see the woman who had bought her own tickets moments earlier. She was still there, purse open, change and tickets in hand. “Why don’t you keep this change,” she said quietly. “The scenery is beautiful, and those costumes couldn’t have been cheap.” She handed me a few dollar bills, and left. Little did that boy know that he had given us both our first gift of the Christmas season.
