Wuld yu believe that the first utstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman? His name was Laurent Cleric. He became a friend f Thmas Hpkins Gallaudet and tgether they funded America’s first schl fr the deaf.
Laurent Cleric was brn in a small village near Lyns, France, n December 26, 1785. When he was ne year ld, he fell int a fire, lsing bth his hearing and his sense f smell. At 12, Laurent entered the Ryal Institutin fr the Deaf in Paris where he excelled in his studies. After he graduated, the schl asked him t stay n as an assistant teacher.
Meanwhile, in America, Thmas Hpkins Gallaudet was studying t be a minister. He was very cncerned abut the lack f educatinal pprtunities fr the deaf. Therefre, in 1815, Gallaudet sailed t Lndn, England t seek ideas n hw t teach deaf peple.
