I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group—we'll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”
It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me. But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “l(fā)ikes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call. “Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval(認(rèn)可). I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
Before Facebook, surfing the Internet was an occasional distraction and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls. To recreate the simplicity (質(zhì)樸) of those days and set a healthier example for my son, I deactivated my Facebook account.
I'd been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered knitting(針織). I started taking yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I'm in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year. I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends' kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates. It is not an addiction any more.
24. The underlined word “deactivated” is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. checked B. kept C. closed D. updated
25. What did the author do to change her life?
A. She traveled around a lot for a year. B. She went to the gym as often as she could.
C. She tried to make money for her holidays. D. She developed some healthy habits.
26. What did the author think of the break from Facebook?
A. It gave her time to find beauty in life
B. It distanced her from her friends.
C. It was good for her eyes.
D. It helped her to get acceptance and approval from others.
27. What is the author's attitude towards social media?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.

As France enters a strict four-week lockdown in order to prevent a dangerous second wave of coronavirus, its independent booksellers have requested the status (地位) of an essential service.
A statement announced by booksellers’ association wants bookshops to be listed together with supermarkets and drugstores as necessary to human well-being. Bookstores might not be the first thing that comes to mind when we think about what’s needed in a dangerous situation, but they offer mental comfort that few other businesses can match. “Books satisfy our needs for understanding, reflection, sharing and communication, even in separation,” says the statement. They appeal to the French government to “l(fā)eave our bookstores open, so that social separation is not also cultural isolation(隔離).”
Bookstores have already established rules of conduct that allow shopping to occur in a safe, germ-free manner. They want curbside (路邊) pickup to be allowed to continue, which means placing a customer’s order to his car trunk without the buyer leaving his vehicle. The staff should wear a mask and stay at least six feet of distance while delivering goods.
We also reached out to the American Booksellers Association (ABA) to learn whether American booksellers also view themselves as a much-needed service. CEO Allison Hill admits that booksellers “in no way outweigh healthcare workers during the stay-at-home period,” but the role of bookstores and books should not be underestimated. Books are important to many people this year for various reasons, including homeschooling, education, emotional support, connection, and humanity. That is why “bookstores in the U.S. are given essential status during shutdowns so that they can continue offering curbside service.” Despite this, independent booksellers are struggling across the US, as they are in France. Hill said in a press release that one bookshop has closed per week since COVID-19 started and that 25% are in danger of closing by January.
28. Why did the association announce the statement?
A. To run bookshops near markets. B. To compete with US booksellers.
C. To keep bookstores running. D. To stress the benefits of books.
29. According to Paragraph 3, how will bookstores operate safely?
A. By offering less contact pickup. B. By providing home delivery.
C. By giving away free masks. D. By forcing buyers to leave the cars.
30. What can we infer from Allison Hill’s words?
A. The great importance of books is overlooked.
B. American bookstores are considered necessary.
C. Booksellers are more important than doctors.
D. A quarter of bookstores have closed by January.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Books offer mental support in tough times.
B. Bookstores are at the risk of closing down.
C. Booksellers contribute a lot during the pandemic(大流行?。?
D. Bookstores should be an essential service.

Researchers from Arizona State University (ASU) published their latest report. When men expressed their opinions with anger, people considered them more believable. But when women expressed anger, they were viewed as more emotional and, thus, less convincing. In other words, a man could benefit from using anger in power and persuasion. A woman, however, could be ignored or hurt by her group if she expressed anger.
The study was based on the responses of 210 students. They were shown evidence online from a murder (謀殺) trial. A man was said to have murdered his wife. The students were asked to decide if the man was guilty or not. Before making their decisions, the students discussed the case online with five jurors (陪審員). But these jurors were computers generating responses and comments. Some of the jurors had male identities. Others had female identities.
Some male jurors were angry about the verdict (裁決). When this happened, the students reacted by doubting their own decisions about the case. Confidence in their responses on the verdict dropped. However, when female jurors seemed angry, the students became more confident in their original verdicts.
Jessica Salerno, a psychologist and co-author of the study, said, “Our results provide something important for any woman who is trying to have an influence on a decision in her workplace and everyday life.”
In a political debate, a female candidate might have less influence if she shows anger. In the entertainment world, actor Jennifer Lawrence recently wrote that women and men in Hollywood get the opposite reactions when expressing their opinions angrily. “All I hear and see are men speaking their opinions,” she wrote, “When I give mine in the quite similar manner, you would have thought I said something annoying.”
32. What's the new finding from the ASU report?
A. Men usually do harm to angry women.
B. Women are more likely to become angry.
C. Angry men appear to gain influence in a group.
D. People prefer to believe the angry women.
33. When would the students be sure about their decisions in the study?
A. Male jurors agreed with them. B. They became angry with the jurors.
C. Angry female jurors didn't agree with them. D. Angry male jurors showed opposite opinions.
34. What does Jessica Salerno think the study?
A. It helps women avoid losing influence.
B. It asks men to get away from angry women.
C. It causes men to change their attitude to women.
D. It shows men and women should be treated equally.
35. How does the author support Jessica Salerno?
A. By presenting research findings. B. By setting down general rules.
C. By making comparisons. D. By giving examples.
第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
Saying no to the right things will help you prioritize (優(yōu)先處理) high-benefit activities, avoiding excessive stress, and reducing the risk of failing to meet your responsibilities. So, it's better to get into the habit of considering what invitations to say yes to and what to say no to.? ? ?36? ? ? .
Start by asking yourself questions to measure the potential benefits: ? ? ?37? ? ? What is the likelihood that it will create more beneficial opportunities in the future? How important is this activity to me personally? Or, will this bring me joy?
? ? ?38? ? ?: How much of my time will it really take? How much time does my schedule have available around when this activity would take place? Will saying yes mean I can’t say yes to something else that’s important to me? Will saying yes steal time away from my personal life? Will this activity cost money? How much stress will the activity cause me? Finally, would I suffer bad effects if I said no?
When you’re done, carefully examine the advantages and disadvantages. If your analysis suggests that the activity would result in many benefits and few costs, then that should be a top candidate for a yes response. ? ? ?39? ? ?, even if they are low-cost as well. In our experience, it's the high-benefit, high-cost activities that require the most careful consideration.? ? ?40? ? ?, which isn't always easy—especially if your answer is no. Figuring out how to give an honest response can help avoid over commitment and time spent on low-benefit activities.
A. Could you give this presentation?
B. How much will I learn?
C. The next step is making a response
D. Then ask yourself questions to estimate the possible costs
E. On the contrary, low-benefit activities might be given a straight no
F. You can achieve it by making an informal cost-benefit analysis
G. We encourage you to do three things to improve your “no” abilities

Most people ride the bus to get from point A to point B, but some riders 71 (take) a new route in Hong Kong are only interested in snoozing(小睡). In the last two years, Ulu Travel Agency,
72 tour company in Hong Kong, 73 (design) and launched a five-hour bus journey specifically for customers to sleep as much as they want.
Many find 74 easy to fall asleep during a long bus trip. But why? There are several possible reasons.
White noise is a type of noise produced by combining sounds with different 75 (frequent) together. Buses are often crowded every day with people going to and 76 work. Therefore, they are the perfect environment for white noise. They produce consistent noises, like the hum of tires or the purring(嗡嗡聲)of the engine. White noise hides distracting sounds and is helpful for people who have trouble 77 (get) sleep.
Another popular view on 78 it’s easy to fall asleep on buses is because of the rocking motion. “The motion of buses resembles a mother swaying(搖晃) a baby in her arms. It is very comfortable,” Frankie Chow, founder of Ulu Travel Agency, told the Washington Post. 79 , it’s not exactly the rocking movement 80 the association between rocking and sleeping that causes sleep. If you want to sleep as a baby, you’d better associate that rocking motion with going to sleep.

M: One day, Jack was walking home from school. ?He liked to think about important things while he was walking, and he often looked down at the sidewalk while he thought. He never noticed most things like bugs and small pieces of trash. ?But this day, a shiny coin caught his eyes. He stopped and picked it up. It was a nice dollar coin. With that, he could buy a package of candy. But he decided to put the coin on the ground again. What if a homeless person might need that money more than he did? He could buy a cup of hot coffee or a loaf of bread with it. But then, Jack quickly picked up the coin again. What if one of the wealthy guys found it? ?But just as quickly, Jack put the coin onto the ground and walked away, ?because he had seen the poorest boy in his class heading in the same direction, with his eyes also on the ground.
