I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group—we'll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”
It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me. But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “l(fā)ikes” it had got. As France enters a strict four-week lockdown in order to prevent a dangerous second wave of coronavirus, its independent booksellers have requested the status (地位) of an essential service.
A statement announced by booksellers’ association wants bookshops to be listed together with supermarkets and drugstores as necessary to human well-being. Bookstores might not be the first thing that comes to mind when we think about what’s needed in a dangerous situation, but they offer mental comfort that few other businesses can match. “Books satisfy our needs for understanding, reflection, sharing and communication, even in separation,” says the statement. They appeal to the French government to “l(fā)eave our bookstores open, so that social separation is not also cultural isolation（隔離）.”
Bookstores have already established rules of conduct that allow shopping to occur in a safe, germ-free manner. They want curbside (路邊) pickup to be allowed to continue, which means placing a customer’s order to his car trunk without the buyer leaving his vehicle. The staff should wear a mask and stay at least six feet of distance while delivering goods.
We also reached out to the American Booksellers Association (ABA) to learn whether American booksellers also view themselves as a much-needed service. CEO Allison Hill admits that booksellers “in no way outweigh healthcare workers during the stay-at-home period,” but the role of bookstores and books should not be underestimated. Books are important to many people this year for various reasons, including homeschooling, education, emotional support, connection, and humanity. That is why “bookstores in the U.S. are given essential status during shutdowns so that they can continue offering curbside service.” Despite this, independent booksellers are struggling across the US, as they are in France. Hill said in a press release that one bookshop has closed per week since COVID-19 started and that 25% are in danger of closing by January.

Researchers from Arizona State University （ASU） published their latest report. When men expressed their opinions with anger, people considered them more believable. But when women expressed anger, they were viewed as more emotional and, thus, less convincing. In other words, a man could benefit from using anger in power and persuasion. A woman, however, could be ignored or hurt by her group if she expressed anger.
The study was based on the responses of 210 students. They were shown evidence online from a murder (謀殺) trial. A man was said to have murdered his wife. The students were asked to decide if the man was guilty or not. Before making their decisions, the students discussed the case online with five jurors (陪審員). But these jurors were computers generating responses and comments. Some of the jurors had male identities. Others had female identities.
Some male jurors were angry about the verdict (裁決). When this happened, the students reacted by doubting their own decisions about the case. Confidence in their responses on the verdict dropped. However, when female jurors seemed angry, the students became more confident in their original verdicts.
Jessica Salerno, a psychologist and co-author of the study, said, “Our results provide something important for any woman who is trying to have an influence on a decision in her workplace and everyday life.”
In a political debate, a female candidate might have less influence if she shows anger. In the entertainment world, actor Jennifer Lawrence recently wrote that women and men in Hollywood get the opposite reactions when expressing their opinions angrily. “All I hear and see are men speaking their opinions,” she wrote, “When I give mine in the quite similar manner, you would have thought I said something annoying.”
