【原文】W: Good afternoon and welcome to Seattle Houseboat Tours. My name’s Elizabeth Jones and I’m your guide today. This is my houseboat Moonlight. Before we go on board, I’d like to give you a little background information. Seattle has one of the largest numbers of houseboats in the US — about 500 of them in fact. That’s quite a high number and shows how popular houseboat living is here. We’re at the Southern end of Lake Union right now. As you have probably seen already, this is a lively area with restaurants and shops and cafes. During our one-hour tour, you’ll see a number of houseboats. People can pay millions of dollars for the biggest of these. Some of them are quite amazing and have two or three floors. My own is one of the smallest boats, but I still have plenty of room, as you’ll see when I show you around. My living area includes one bedroom with a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. I also have electricity, running water and network, so I really do have everything I need. You may be interested to know that I’m writing a book on the history of houseboats in the city, and this should be on sale from early July. Well, thank you for listening so far. Now let’s move into the boat and start the tour.

A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.
According to course instructor William Barry associate professor at NDNU, Bina48 is the world's first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, an achievement he described as “remarkable." The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.
Before becoming a student, Bina48 speared as a guest speaks in Barry's classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry's class, Bina48 expressed a desire to go to college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course^ Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn't understand, said Barry Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.
"Some interesting things happened in the class," said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is "fairly simple — it's a feeling," said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning "31 different versions of love," said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working with artificial intelligence in future.
Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with, students from West Point. Bina48's contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bma48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.
In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely。
24. What was Bina48's performance like in class?
A. Unattractive. B. Impractical.
C. Unbelievable. D. Extraordinary.
25. What does the underlined word "addressing" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Giving a speech to. B. Consulting with.
C. Dealing with. D. Sending a letter to.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. It was impossible for Bina48 to learn about love.
B. It was quite difficult for Bina48 to learn about love,
C. Humans can launch, a challenge to artificial intelligence.
D. Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.
27. What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?
A. It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.
B. It will completely take the place of instructors.
C. It will be able to promote learning and teaching.
D. It will be smart enough to control human beings.
【答案】24. D 25. A 26. D 27. C

When I was a child, I stayed with my grandmother a lot of the time while my mother was at work. One day some money problems started to arise for my grandmother and the family. They needed a little more income so she decided to sing at the nearby retirement home (養(yǎng)老院).
So I had to go with her. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but as soon as my grandmother actually persuaded me to get on stage and start singing, I loved it. I just loved seeing that sparkle (光亮) in those people’s eyes. They would stand up and dance and clap to the beat of the music. Eventually, we were singing at many of the homes in the surrounding area 5 out of 7 days a week.
Making other people happy has always made me happy. And during that experience I even discovered my gift, singing. My grandma still sings to those people 15 years later, only for no charge now. I moved to North Carolina when I was 13, leaving my grandma in Florida, but I still carry on her effort and try and go out of my way to do something kind, even if very small, for at least one person every day. There is no better feeling in the world than the one you get when you hear appreciation in someone’s voice.

30. We can infer from the second paragraph that ________.
A. the author had great confidence when she started to sing
B. the audience were surprised that the author could sing at such an early age
C. the audience didn’t like the author at first
D. the author was loved by the audience
31. What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?
A. One can find his gift only through failure.
B. Others’ appreciation can make one happy.
C. One can succeed if he doesn’t give up halfway.
D. It’s hard to win others appreciation.

Reading is to success what water is to fish. Apparently, every successful person develops a passion for reading. This is because reading is the key to get the information required to understand something. For example, lawyers have to study and learn every established law on their specific branches. Sometimes the law changes according to people’ s needs. A good lawyer has to be informed about the latest news in the court. A doctor has to be informed of the latest advances in medicine.
Reading is very important for all mankind. Everything is relative in this world, especially reading. Reading can open many doors and it can lead you into a path of success. Studies have confirmed that reading to your unborn child is very good. This way your child will develop a passion for reading.
How do you develop a passion for reading? There is only one way you can boost your passion for reading. Let me explain this to you. If you want to learn how to ride a bike, you have to get on the bike as many times as possible until you have learned. It works the same way with reading. If you want to improve your reading, take a book and read it all the way through. When you finish reading your first book, take another book and do the same. Try to read as much as you can. If you are going out, take a magazine, a book, an article or something to read.
There is a very important factor behind the reading---reading comprehension. It’s what makes you understand the meaning behind the text. Let’s assume that you read a document and you are supposed to explain the meaning of the document. How would you explain the document if you couldn’t capture (捕捉) the message of the author?
32. The first paragraph mainly talk about________.
A. what reading comprehension is
B. how to find a book to read
C. we can get information from the Internet
D. the importance of reading
33. We can define reading comprehension as________.
A. a very important factor behind reading
B. something that makes people understand what they read
C. a strong passion for reading
D. the latest information in reading
34. The author develops the passage mainly by________.
A. comparing the opinions of different people
B. presenting stories
C. presenting opinions and giving examples
D. following the natural time order
35. What can you do to read more?
A. Take something to read when you are out.
B. Read at school.
C. Make friends with who love reading.
D. Visit some popular website.

You’re complaining(抱怨) to your parents about something. Maybe your computer isn’t powerful enough to play the latest games. ____36____Then you hear...
“When I was your age, there weren’t any computers or video games. And I didn’t get a bike until I was 16. And it was second-hand. ____37____”
So is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. ____38____So parents have got more money to spend on each child. And many things are cheaper than they were when our parents were children.
____39____Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smartphones. And now these things are necessary—we can’t imagine living without them!
However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it’s just us, with our computer or television. Teenagers don’t do enough exercise. ____40____And, although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today don’t have so many social activities as the teenagers in the past.
What do you think? How is teenage life better these days?
A. And it was too big for me.
B. A typical family is smaller now.
C. You get very unhappy with this.
D. Or your friends’ bikes are better than yours.
E. So they aren’t as healthy as the teenagers in the past.
F. Life was not easy in the past.
G. Technology is probably the greatest change in our life.

【解析】
【導(dǎo)語】這是一篇議論文。文章主要講述了青少年現(xiàn)在的生活和過去的生活的對比,詳細(xì)討論了生活變化之大,同時(shí),這也帶來了一些問題。
【36題詳解】
根據(jù)后文“And I didn’t get a bike until I was 16.(直到16歲我才有了一輛自行車。)”可知,這里應(yīng)是與之相呼應(yīng)提到了“自行車事件”。選項(xiàng)D“Or your friends’ bikes are better than yours.(或者你朋友的自行車比你的好。)”提到了“自行車事件”,符合分析。故選D項(xiàng)。
【37題詳解】
根據(jù)前文“And I didn’t get a bike until I was 16. And it was second-hand.(直到16歲我才有了一輛自行車。而且是二手的。)”可知,這里以父母的口吻講述自己的自行車的“不好”,因此可推知,設(shè)空句應(yīng)呼應(yīng)話題,講述二手自行車的不好。選項(xiàng)A“And it was too big for me.(它對我來說太大了。)”符合分析,“And”與前文構(gòu)成遞進(jìn)關(guān)系,“it”與前文“a bike”,“it”相呼應(yīng)。故選A項(xiàng)。
【38題詳解】

【39題詳解】
設(shè)空句為該段中心句,應(yīng)體現(xiàn)主旨核心。根據(jù)后文“Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smartphones.(40年前,沒有人能想象一個(gè)擁有微型電腦和令人驚嘆的智能手機(jī)的世界。)”可知,該段的主旨核心是現(xiàn)代科技,選項(xiàng)G“Technology is probably the greatest change in our life.(科技可能是我們生活中最大的變化。)”
選項(xiàng)E“So they aren’t as healthy as the teenagers in the past.(所以他們不像過去的青少年那樣健康。)”符合缺乏鍛煉的后果,前后銜接緊密。故選E項(xiàng)。

【答案】Dear Li Ming,
My name is Zhang Hua. I’m one of your classmates. I’m writing you this letter to tell you something about the new environment you’re in.
It seems that you feel uncomfortable now because you’ve just entered a new environment, and I’m willing to help you through the hard time. The reason why you feel uneasy could be that you still need some time. And maybe you’re a little shy to communicate with others. I think that you can talk with people around you, and be brave to ask them questions that you don’t know. Besides, you can always turn to me for help whenever you need it. I’m sure that you will get used to this new place soon.
Looking forward to your reply.

Five years ago, I had a nine-to-five job, and I usually commuted to work by bus. Those long tiring hours of travelling were always annoying. But one day, it was healing.
It was a warm March evening, and I'd just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home. I sat in the third row by the window, on the driver's side. It was nearly 6:00 p.m., but the bus was not yet full and the driver gave no indication that he intended to get the bus on the road anytime soon.
A middle-aged woman look a seat opposite me. She was crying. Not speaking to anyone in particular, she tearfully told her story.
She had come to the city to visit her daughter. On the way to the terminal, a thief had snatched one of her bags. It had contained half of the money she'd brought with her. The other half was rolled in a handkerchief and hidden under her blouse, so she fortunately still had some money left.
The bus conductor, driver, and other passengers listened to her tale. After a few minutes, she stopped crying, removed some cheese bread from her bag, and began to eat, worry still sweeping over her.
An old man in ragged and shabby clothes got on the bus. He sat in the seal directly in front of the woman.
After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver got behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were getting off. When by came to the old man's seal, he became suspicious and asked the old man whether he had any money .The old man admitted that he did not. He explained that he had spent all his money this morning when he'd accidentally got on the wrong bus and now he was trying to go home.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus.?The?old man?didn't move. He was almost in tears as he begged the bus conductor to let him take that bus so he could get home before dark. The bus driver, who had been listening to his explanation, stood up, approached the old man, and repeated the conductor's command to urge the old man to?get off?the bus. Apart from the harsh word from the driver and sobs from the old man, the whole bus was in a terrible silence. All the other passengers including me watched quietly.
Paragraph 2:
The woman seated behind the old man was also listening and observing the incident.?When the bus driver and conductor raised their voices at the old man, she interfered. “Stop harassing him! Can't you see he's only trying to get home?” “He doesn't have any money!”?the driver?shouted. “Well, that's no reason to throw him off the bus,” she insisted. “It's just money,” she shrugged. Meanwhile, she reached inside her?blouse, took out her remaining?money, and handed the fares to the conductor. “Here is his fare and mine. Just stop giving him a hard time.” Later, she also shared her?bread?with the old man. And I found a Mona Lisa smile of peace and grace spreading across her face instead of worry. How much sweeter the journey was when we made it a little smoother and richer for others.
