“In a way ver-cnsumptin (過度消費(fèi)) is the mther f all ur envirnmental prblems,” Kalle Lasn nce tld CNN. Lasn is the rganizer f Buy Nthing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 t fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has nw becme an internatinal event. It’s held n the day, which is knwn as Black Friday — a famus shpping day in the US and Canada.
Yu can see the irny (諷刺) here.
Even thugh the idea f Buy Nthing Day was brught up 26 years ag, we seem t need it nw mre than ever. It’s just as Lasn said, all the different kinds f pllutin in ur lives tday — bad air quality, the reductin f frest area, endangered animal species, and plastic bags fund in the cean — seem t be the same cause: ver-cnsumptin.
The latest example is the Singles’ Day shpping craze f Nv 11, which saw a new sales recrd. But as Nie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, tld Reuters, “Recrd-setting ver-cnsumptin means recrd-setting waste.” And it was reprted that last year the Singles’ Day packages left mre than 160,000 tns f waste, including plastic and cardbard. The Cllins Dictinary has als just named “single-use” its Wrd f the Year, pinting ut the prblem that there’re t many things we tw ut after nly using them nce.
S, Buy Nthing Day might nly be here fr ne day a year, but it’s nt just t remind us t the a break frm shpping n that day, but t change ur lifestyle cmpletely, fcusing n fun “with peple we care abut” rather than wasting mney n useless things.

Culd a grwing number f peple participate in tday’s wrld withut reading r writing at all? Technlgy makes it pssible. Mst f ur devices nw talk t us and take spken cmmands. Smart cars ask fr a destinatin and then give directins. Smart virtual assistants listen fr requests t reprt the weather, play a sng, set a timer, rder grceries, and much mre. Sftware can als read text alud r turn speech int text. These interactins aren’t perfect — the sftware still makes silly mistakes. But it’s getting better and better. It’s pssible t imagine a future wrld where all f ur cmmunicatin with ur devices and each ther is spken.
But reading and writing are pwerful tls. Fr ne, mst peple read faster than they speak. A pdcaster r audi bk narratr speaks at arund 150 t 160 wrds per minute, while a strng reader can cruise thrugh a text at 300 t 400 wrds per minute. That’s twice as fast! Research has als fund that peple remember mre infrmatin and stay mre interested when they read as ppsed t listen. Learning t read als creates new cnnectins in the brain. 11. Where is the text prbably taken frm?
A. A textbk.B. A blg pst.C. A bk review.D. An academic article.

A grwing demand fr turtles(烏龜) as pets in the United States, Asia, and Eurpe has led t a rise in paching. Paching means t catch r kill an animal illegally. The United States and several Latin American cuntries have suggested stpping r limiting the trade in mre than 20 turtle species. In their CITES prpsal, the cuntries included data frm Mexic that fund nearly 20,000 were cnfiscated frm 2010 t 2022. T cnfiscate means t take smething away frm smene t carry ut laws r rules.
The illegal trade has als led gvernments t suggest listing fr the first time 42 turtle species under CITES, including Nrth American musk turtles. A listing means traders will need permits t sell them internatinally.
Matthew Strickler is with the U.S. Department f the Interir. He is heading the American grup at the CITES meeting in Panama. He called the pssible listings and increased prtectin fr Nrth American turtles “really, really imprtant”.
“We’ve seen this pattern f turtles being depleted in ne place, and then pachers and traders mving t anther place,” Strickler said. “Sutheast Asia was depleted. They mved t Africa. Nw, we see them mving t the Americas.”
12. What is the real cause f the drp in the turtle ppulatin?
A. Hunting them fr their medical value.B. The pllutin f freshwater.
C. Humans’ keeping them as pets.D. Their hmes being destryed.
13. What d we knw frm Tara Easter’s study?
A. Turtle trade grew rapidly.B. Turtles were well prtected.
C. Turtles grw mre and mre ppular.D. Mud turtles were liked better than musk turtles.
