It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring California. His 90-pound pit bull, Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham's attention. It was the deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, sorne100 feet away, In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy's head and started dragging him away.
Benham, a thin, fit 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly, he told CBS 13, “he only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’” Sprinting, he lowered his shoulder and plowed into the bear But it only tightened its grip on Buddy. Benham grabbed the bear.by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open, but the jaw was locked tight, Benham resorted to street fighting—punching the bear over and over around its snout and eye. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied and ripped up. His ears were dangling. He had a bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.
“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He scooped up Buddy, put him into his car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy's surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the procedure through a window. “I just stood there,” he said, watching as Buddy's ears were stapled back on and skin flaps were stitched, and tubes were inserted into his head to drain fluid.
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS 13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That's my kid.”

In Scotland, 600, 000 tonnes of food are thrown away every year. This amount of food, which could feed about 1.2 billion poor people, is almost a third of household(家庭的) waste. And food waste isn't just a big problem in Scotland.
Money, time, and resources are often wasted by throwing away good food. It also causes very harmful greenhouse gas, which is perilous to the planet.
In the production stage, some foods do not enter the food chain for many reasons. Supermarkets usually care about the quality of food from farms. They often refuse strange-looking and unusual y sized produce. However, they seem to forget that it is a most impossible to grow the perfect produce. Food waste at the consumption stage includes food going out of date and leftovers because of too much food. In households, even mostly fresh fruit and vegetables are thrown away.
In order to reduce food waste, here is what we can do:
Understand the terms “use by” and “best before” dates. “Use by” dates are there for your safety. It is dangerous to eat food after the use-by date and doing so risks your health. “Best before” dates tell you how long the food will beat its best quality. Once the food passes the date, it isn't necessarily bad, but you should still check, just to be sure.
Every time you go shop pig and bring back new food, put them at the back of your fridge and bring the food that will expire(到期) soon closer to the front. That way, you know what needs to be eaten first.
If you have any food that will expire soon, give it to charity if you aren't going to cat it. They will really appreciate the food you have given.
28. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. Food waste is the biggest part of household waste.
B. Food waste is a common problem.
C. People in Scotland waste the most food.
D. Household waste hasn't drawn much attention.
29. What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2mean?
A. Valuable. B. Unnecessary. C. Different. D. Dangerous.
30. What should people do to reduce food waste according to the text?
A. Pick usually sized produce.
B. Avoid buying too much food at a time.
C. Order produce directly from farmers.
D. Improve the quality of farm produce.
31. What advice does the author offer to people?
A. Buy food that will expire soon to reduce waste.
B. Give food that has passed its use-by date to charity.
C. Throw away food that passes the best-before date.
D. Place food carefully according to its expiry date.
D
New research has found a direct correlation between how a child visually tracks his mother's eyes and the condition. How a toddler responds to baby talk could help diagnose autism(自閉癥)years before symptoms begin, according to the new research.
A study examined responses to parents' use of playful, emotional, exaggerated tones, known as “motherese” (mother's ‘baby talk’), to capture a child's attention. Eye-tracking tests showed that children who did not respond had weaker social and language abilities. Professor Karen Pierce, of California University in San Diego, co-author of the research, said, “We know the earlier we can introduce treatment, the more effective it is likely to be. But most children don't get a formal diagnosis until around the age of three or four. There is a real need for easy and effective tools that can be used on young children. Eye-tacking is a great place to start.”
In experiments, 653 toddlers aged one to two years old were exposed to two one-minute videos featuring a woman speaking motherese or abstract scenes. Their eyes controlled which one played. Participants without ASD (autism spectrum disorder) showed consistently high interest in the woman speaking motherese, spending an average 80 percent of the time watching it. They largely ignored the second video which showed a busy highway, abstract shapes and numbers and had accompanying electronic music.
However, attention levels of peers diagnosed with ASD spanned the full range of concentration levels, with some focusing 100 percent on the random images. A group who fixed on motherese less than 30 percent of the time could be accurately identified as having ASD through this measurement alone. These children also showed lower scores on subsequent tests of language and social skills.
Whether less attention to motherese is the cause of reduced sociability or merely a symptom has yet to be determined. However, researchers found it appears to be a highly accurate biomarker for the condition. Prof Pierce said, “The fact we can reliably identify children with autism using such a simple and rapid eye-tracking test is really remarkable. In future, we hope to us each ids attention to motherese as a cue for which treatments they may most benefit from and as a tool for measuring how well those treatments work.”
32. What is the purpose of the study?
A. To catch a child's attention.
B. To check a child's eyesight.
C. To test a child's reaction to motherese.
D. To diagnose autism early.
33. What can we know according to Pierce?
A. Eye-tracking test is a good way to cur c autism.
B. There is an urgent need for complex tool applied to young children.
C. It is essential to bring in ASD treatment in early time,
D. Most children don't get an informal diagnosis before the age of three or four.
34. How did participants without ASD responded to the videos in experiments?
A. They showed occasionally high interest in the woman speaking motherese.
B. They fixed 80 percent on the random images.
C. They focused on motherese more than 30%percent of time.
D. They mainly overlooked the second one:
35. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. The connection between a child's reaction to motherese and autism.
B. How to improve toddlers' language and social skills.
C. The process of eye-tracking test.
D. How to heal autism.

During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a one-week tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join,
On Saturday morning, Darla's mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket “If you girls stick to tennis, then we’ll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.” The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 a.m.,
Patty's mom woke her up. “It’s time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it’s too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla's house, then they walked to the court.
Mrs. Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs. Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand and backhand. By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs. Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.
Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves or hitting the ball. Patty wasn’t really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn't need to practice. By the end of the summer, Dara began to get the hang of it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well but she didn't want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring:

When a student completes his course, he earns a bachelor's degree that will help him find a job. Many students stay at university and work for a higher degree. Other students take a job for a few years, then they quit working, and they continue studying at the university. Those students work to earn higher degrees. They are called graduate students. Graduate students specialize in a particular field of study. They study to become experts in their field. They hope that when they get their graduate degrees they will succeed in finding interesting jobs with good salaries. Graduate are usually too busy studying. Often they have to pay high school fees. Some give up studying before they get their degrees. But most keep on working at their studies until they graduate. In today's world, most gradates don't regret spending time on studies. They are finding that things are changing fast. New development are occurring in all fields. For many, graduate study has become a necessity.

故填has led/has been leading。
故填was launched。
故填where。
故填and。
故填a.
故填to garden。
故填world's。

The week before school started, Mrs. Cane held another training course .Darla and Patty signed up immediately. In a class, Mrs. Cane asked the teenagers to play in turn. Darla came first, impressing others with her excellent performance. Mrs. Cane was pleased with Darla's progress. “Well, I can tell who's been practicing!” she smiled. Soon it was Patty's turn. Everyone looked at the “talent” expectantly. Yet, Patty had not practiced and was far behind the rest, which was a shock for all. Patty was upset and absent until the class was over.
Patty couldn’t stop thinking of her poor performance on the way home. She realized she needed change if she still wanted to continue with tennis. The next day, Patty came to Darla's team when they practiced to ask whether she could join. Warmly welcomed, she became a member of the team that day. Weak though she was, Patty enjoyed herself and worked hard at practice. She finally found that “natural talent” got her nowhere without diligence and she was able to join in the fun. That was one of the best lessons of her life.
