High school freshmen always have a lot of questions on their minds. “What can I do when I grow up?” is one of them. It's definitely not too early to start thinking about this tough question. The following tips may help equip you for your future career.
Think beyond grades
Getting good grades in high school is important, but focusing only on straight A's could go wrong. Spending too much time on your schoolwork will leave you little time to explore opportunities outside of the classroom. Extracurricular (課外的) activities are necessary because they serve as form of career exploration. They can help you figure out your work preferences, like whether you are a “people person (擅長交際的人)”or prefer to work alone. Nowadays, most well-known colleges care about candidates' experiences as much as their grades.
Seek advice from grown-ups
Talk to your parents, teachers and school counselors (顧問) about how they started their careers. Even though you're not interested in the careers they are in, it would be useful to learn about the process which got them where they are now. If you find your friend's' mother doing worthwhile job by chance, ask her if job shadowing (體驗(yàn)工作) is possible in her company during vacation After all, seeing a typical day in the position you have an interest in can be an invaluable experience.
Start your search online
If you really have no idea what you can do when you grow up, take online career quizzes to get ideas about what professions naturally match your skills, interests and personality traits (特點(diǎn)). For the time being, you just need to focus on finding a field or two that interests you, rather than a specific career. Chances are you'll change your mind several times before finding a career that you want to stick to. Starting to explore career options now can at least help you decide what your potential major might be.

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”—Albert Einstein
If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, you’re likely to have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (腦癱) and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn’t always an accurate measure of her abilities.
By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence increase rapidly.” he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers.
Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: wonderful. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done—she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase greatly. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.
I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all have. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.
14. What does the author think of Albert Einstein’s saying?
A. Funny. B. True. C. Strange. D. Confusing.
15. What can we learn about Syona’s teacher?
A. She is Syona’s favorite teacher.
B. She puts Einstein’s quote on the wall.
C. She uses videos to teach her students.
D. She helps increase her students’ confidence.
16. What change has taken place in the author’s family?
A. They’ve invited Ulmer’s students to their home.
B They visit Ulmer’s classroom regularly.
C. They give each other praise every day.
D. They feel thankful to people in their lives.
C
Whether a person is considering starting a small business or changing career paths passion must be taken into account. While characteristics such as strong values, talent, ambition, intellect, discipline, persistence (毅力), and luck all contribute to business and career success, following your passion can often make the most significant difference of all.
Before discussing passion and explaining its significance, we must first define the true meaning of success. Success is usually thought of as making large sums of wealth or achieving a certain level of fame, but true success that satisfies is not all about money.
Success is better defined as an achievement of a desired aim or purpose. More than money or fame, most people desire to combine their own passions with their work while making a sustainable income. The more you earn, the less money returns, making money an elusive (難以捉摸的) definition of success.
For most people, success means being proud of their achievements and being part of something that matters. This is particularly true when it comes to meaningful work. If a person decides to follow their passion, there is a greater likelihood that money and traditional success will follow because the time and effort invested in the adventure come with enthusiasm and zeal (熱情).
If enthusiasm and passion are present, people tend to be more resilient (有承受力) when facing difficulties. People who are passionate about what they do, rather than just “in it for the money,” tend to be people who have more positive outlooks and can overcome difficulty through problem-solving.
Also, the more passionate someone is about their job, the more inclined (傾向于) they are to work hard on self-improvement, increasing their chances of success.
One of the most successful companies in the world is Apple. Apple’s founder and most remarkable leader was the late Steve Jobs. In an article titled “The Seven Success Principles of Steve Jobs”, writer Carmine Gallo outlines seven factors responsible for Jobs’ success. The article is based on interviews with Apple employees and Steve Jobs himself. The first principle? “Do what you love.” Steve Jobs believed in the power of passion and once said, “People with passion can change the world for the better.” Jobs claimed that his passion for his work made all the difference.
17. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ______.
A. introduce the topic B. make a comparison
C. present a problem D. give a definition
18. By saying “The more you earn, the less money returns, making money an elusive definition of success.” in Paragraph 3, the author means ______.
A. sometimes you don’t get much reward for your hard work
B. money doesn’t always define success
C. if you want to be successful, you need a steady income
D. the more you earn, the less money returns, which is not a sign of success
19. What could we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Most people intend to choose meaningful jobs.
B. If you follow most people’s course, success is just around the corner.
C. Working with enthusiasm is more likely to succeed.
D. If you are always proud of yourself, you will succeed easily.
20. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Steve Jobs and His Success Principles
B. Follow Your Passions, and Success Will Follow
C. Secrets to Success
D. Passion and Your Career

A character in one of Shakespeare’s plays once said, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Any of these could apply to the modern-day sportsmen. Many still argue about the nature of talent. Some claim that people are born to be sportsmen, while others say it is only through devotion and hard work that they achieve their abilities. Arguably though, it is not until their talents are acknowledged (認(rèn)可) by the public that they truly have greatness fallen upon them.
With this acknowledgement of their “greatness” come all the trappings of modern-day celebrity: money, power, influence and responsibility. For better or for worse, like it or hate it, modern sportsmen are the role models of children everywhere. These children will grow up admiring their heroes, devoting their lives to copying their every move, and wanting above all to be like them. Due to this fascination, particularly with the massive influence of the media, it is more important than ever for these sportsmen to acknowledge their responsibility.
In the past few months alone, there have been many examples of questionable behaviors from sports stars of the present day. They are often mirroring the very worst aspects of society, a fact that the self-righteous (自以為是的) anger of the modern press has been quick to point out. It would be wrong for us to expect sportsmen to be perfect. It would also be wrong for us to think that their behavior is markedly different from the sportsmen they grew up watching, but with the all-seeing eye of modern media it is a different world, and different standards must be expected.
Of course, there is no duty for sportsmen to be good role models. There are no prison sentences, no fines, no community service—unless their behaviors are illegal. Unless they break the law, it is entirely up to them as to whether or not they think their behavior is appropriate. Furthermore, measuring the true influence their decisions have on their followers is absolutely impossible. Some will rise against their idols, seeing them in a new light and criticizing their actions. Others may copy their heroes’ actions, using them as a shield when accused of the same crimes.
It is without doubt that the actions of sportsmen will influence the lives of those who worship them. Modern day sportsmen are almost ideals of today’s world, and their actions are watched carefully by millions over the world. Some may complain against it, denying their influence on these children’s lives. Others may be aware of it but not respect it, while many may both be aware of it and respect it. In a word, you do not choose whether you are a role model. All you can do is to decide how to act when greatness is thrust upon you.
21. In Paragraph 1, the author tries to emphasize ______.
A. sportsmen become great when their gifts are recognized by people
B. sportsmen achieve greatness through their devotion and efforts
C. different ways for sportsmen to achieve success and greatness
D. the core characteristic to become great sportsmen nowadays
22. According to Paragraph 4, we can learn that ______.
A. role models usually have positive influence on their fans
B. sportsmen have the right to behave freely within the law
C. all the fans will follow their heroes’ actions
D. no duty is given to sportsmen
23. The underlined phrase thrust upon in paragraph 1 most probably means ______.
A. put off B. removed from C. related to D. forced on
24. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advise the media to choose proper events to report.

C To remind the sportsmen of their social responsibilities.
D. To argue that sportsmen should not be expected as heroes.

A new study featuring researchers at Binghamton University found that viewing wealth and material possessions as a sign of success produces significantly better results to life satisfaction than viewing wealth and possessions as a sign of happiness.
“People simply say ‘money can’t buy you happiness’ and just assume that materialism has a negative influence on overall well-being,” said Jenny Jiao, assistant professor of marketing at Binghamton University School of Management. “But it’s not that simple. There is a real difference between success materialism and happiness materialism.”
Jiao and her fellow researchers surveyed over 7,500 German adults to get their findings. They first determined if participants had either a happiness materialistic or success materialistic mindset, and then asked questions regarding current satisfaction of life, expected satisfaction of life in the future and economic motivations.
What they found:
Happiness materialism (wealth and material consumption is the sign of a happy life) can negatively influence life satisfaction in two different ways:
? It can lead a person to be dissatisfied with their current standard of living, which in turn
negatively influences overall life satisfaction.
? It can lead a person to not find satisfaction from other important areas of life (family life, social life, health, etc.), which negatively influences overall life satisfaction.
Success materialism (wealth and material possessions are a sign of success in life) positively influences life satisfaction by boosting (助推) a person’s economic motivation. This can lead to a rise in their future satisfaction with their standard of living, which positively influences overall life satisfaction.
The researchers cross-checked their results with survey answers from other parts of the world, including the United States, to verify (證實(shí)) the universality of the findings. “Your happiness should never rely on money alone, but money can be a tool to motivate you to achieve major milestones in your life, which can make you feel happier in the long run,” said Jiao, adding that focusing on future goals is important in order to stay driven and motivated.
She also cautioned to forget about the other aspects of life that bring satisfaction. “Never lose sight of the other things that provide happiness that don’t necessarily have monetary (貨幣的) value. These include family, friends, your health, continual learning and new experiences,” she said.
25. What did researchers at Binghamton University find in their new study?
A. Materialism has a negative influence on people’s overall well-being.
B. Success materialism and happiness materialism are the same to some extent.
C. Regarding material possessions as a mark of success contributes to better life satisfaction.
D. Viewing wealth and possessions as a sign of happiness positively leads to overall well-being.
26. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The survey result only applies to participants from Germany and the United States.
B. One’s current standard of living has nothing to do with his overall life satisfaction.
C. Family life and social life are two more important factors than wealth and success.
D. Boosting one’s economic motivation may positively influence his life satisfaction.
27 What can you learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. If you want to keep motivated, you should concentrate on money alone.
B. Money can help you achieve major milestones, and thus make you happier.
C. Forget about the other aspects of life that bring satisfaction if you want to be happy.
D. Things that don’t have monetary value should be the focus of your pursuit of happiness.
28. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Wealth can lead to more satisfying life if viewed as a sign of success not happiness.
B. Material possessions viewed as a sign of happiness are vital but always overlooked.
C. Family, friends, health, continual learning and new experiences can lead to success.
D. Satisfaction of life and economic motivations hardly contribute to our happiness.

Some people live to climb the highest mountains. Some people live only dreaming about it while others live to avoid ever climbing at all. But one thing is certain, all people meet mountains in their life.
When I was a little girl, my family moved to a tiny town at the bottom of a big mountain. One day after school, while exploring the green woods of this amazing mountain, I almost fell on a set of stairs. What could these steps lead to? Curiosity got the best of me as I knew it would be starting to get dark soon. I started climbing up those strangely mysterious (神秘的) steps.
I climbed and climbed. There was nothing but just green bushes and these steps. I had to reach the top! But it was now getting real dark. If I kept going I might not be able to see my way back. My mum would be worried sick if I didn’t come home soon. So I ran back home almost in the dark while trying not to get too scared.
Anxiously I went to bed dreaming about what I would find at the top of this magical mountain. Could there be a castle up there? Maybe I would find a monster (怪物). Maybe I was taking the risk of never coming back home. Or, maybe all I would find was absolutely nothing! But something inside me was going to climb that mountain at all cost. I could hardly wait to try this adventure again.
Now we live in a world surrounded by the “can’t do” attitudes. We all fall down. We all have doubts and regrets. Still we must climb and dream about what’s at the top of our mountain. Monsters may appear or the night will fall. But never ever give up on your dream! Never let anyone tell you, “You can’t.” Dream big and climb high!

根據(jù)第一段“Whether an individual is considering starting a small business or changing career paths, passion must be taken into account. 故選A。

(成功通常被認(rèn)為是獲得大量的財(cái)富或獲得一定程度的名聲,但真正讓人滿意的成功并不全是金錢。)”、第三段的第二句“More than money or fame, most people desire to combine their own passions with their work while making a sustainable income.
