(2020·山東·乳山市教學研究中心八年級期中)In general, laws for children are a good thing.
One hundred years ago in industrial countries, children worked 18 hours a day in a factory at age seven. The factory owner could beat a child who fell asleep or was not fast enough. Both parents and teachers could do the same.
Today, there are many laws about children all over the world. Some people think children must obey (遵守) rules or they should be punished (懲罰), others do not agree. The Intuits or Eskimos in Alaska almost never punish their children. The parents don’t hit them. If the children go too far, the parents punish them by making fun of them.
Children in other parts of the world are not as lucky as Eskimo children. American parents can spank (打臀部) their children at home, but a teacher cannot hit a child in a public school. This is also true in Germany. In contrast (對比), it is against the law for anyone to hit a child in Sweden. Swedish parents cannot spank their children. The children also have a special government official who works for their rights. There is even a plan for children to divorce (分離) from their parents though this is not a law yet!

(2022·北京海淀·八年級期中)A History of English...in Five Words
In 1582, Richard Mulcaster, the headmaster of a British school, wrote that English would not go beyond their island. However, it didn’t stay that way. Today, English is spoken all over the world. It is a colorful and diverse (多樣的) language that long has picked up words from many other languages. Here are five words that show the English language’s interesting history.
English
English began in the language spoken by the early Germanic people in the 5th century AD.It is from them that the word “English” comes.
Beef
Although roast beef is seen as a traditional English dish, the word “beef” was introduced from the French word boeuf during the Middle Ages. It was one of a group of words, including pork and mutton, that were taken from the speech of the French who moved to Britain following the Norman Conquest (諾曼底登陸) of 1066. However, the farmers who kept these animals continued to call them by their old English names: cow, pig and sheep. This difference passed on till this day.
Dictionary
Dictionary is a borrowing from Latin dictornarius liber, “book of words”. It first appeared in English in the 6th century, along with a huge number of other words from Latin and Greek. The first English dictionary was written by Robert Cawdrey in 1604. Cawdrey focused only on the difficult words whose meanings would have caused problems for those not educated in Latin and Greek.
Tea
The word tea comes from the Chinese word cha. A love of tea is so ingrained (根深蒂固的) in British life that the expression “cup of tea” has come to stand for anything viewed positively. The saying “It’s not my cup of tea.” means “I don’t like it.”
Emoji
Emoji originated (起源于) in Japan in the 1990s.The word “emoji” is formed by combining the Japanese “e”—picture and “moji”—letter. Emojis are just another example of the development and diversity of English.

(2022·江蘇·盱眙縣教師發(fā)展管理中心研訓部八年級期末)What should you do if a big fire happens at home? There is no much time to think. People need to act quickly. The following rules will be helpful:
Shout out
If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out” fire”. Shout as loudly as you can to wake people up.
Call 119
Never try to put out a fire by yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.
Keep down close to the floor
If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there. It is easier to breathe (呼吸) and see where you are going. Take a wet towel to protect yourself from the fire and smoke.
Check the door
Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.
Get out
If you can, get out of your home as quickly as you can. Don’t stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds.
Don’t use the lift
Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. A lift may stop at a floor while the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.
Don’t go back
Never go back into a building on fire! Even if you have left your pet or favourite toy inside, do not go back for it.

Learn to do small things
You should learn to do small things, such as doing the dishes, sweeping the floor and making the bed. Part of growing up is to be able to take care of yourself. Doing some small things around the house shows that you are becoming responsible (有責任感的).
Divide(分開) housework among the family
In fact, it’s too tiring for one person to do all the housework alone. It’s good to divide housework into different parts. All the family members will do the housework together. Dividing housework among all the family members will make everyone’s job much easier.

What is space tourism?
Space tourism is space travel for leisure purposes (休閑目的). What was once only a dream—described in books such as Arthur C.Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey—is now becoming a reality.
Futurologists (未來學家) are scientists who try to predict (預測) what life will be like in the future. After the first man landed on the moon in 1969, they thought that hotels would be built on the moon by the year 2000. Futurologists also considered the possibility that, in the 21st century, families might go for a holiday on the moon. Neither of these predictions have come true yet—but the rapid development of technology may mean these predictions are a possibility in the years to come.
Space Adventures is currently the only company to send people into space. Space Adventures worked with the Federal Space Agency of the Russian Federation and Rocket and Space Corporation Energia to offer flights for the world’s first private space explorers. Each person paid over $20 million for their 10-day trip to the International Space Station.
Following several successful trips into space, more companies are now thinking about the possibility of sending tourists into space. In order to make it cheaper, suborbital (亞軌道的) space travel is a choice for many companies, including Virgin Galactic. Passengers would go to a height of between 100 and 160 km above earth, experience 3—6 minutes of weightlessness and a view of the stars, then come back down to earth. This costs about $200,000 per person.
While it could be an amazing experience, there are some problems with space tourism. Many people believe that it could make global warming (全球變暖) worse and it is not good for the ozone layer (臭氧層). What’s more, space travel is only really for the rich people. There are still millions of people worldwide who couldn’t pay for it.

Doctor Seuss is one of the best-loved and most successful children’s book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers.
Dr. Seuss took up writing because of a report. In 1954, a report in life magazine told about school children who could not read. It said many children’s books were not interesting. Dr. Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. Although he did not get training (訓練) in art, he drew the pictures for most of his books.

(2021·上海·上外附中八年級階段練習)Answer questions in COMPLETE sentences.
For a long time people had wondered how life had developed on earth. The Bible stated that god had created everything in a week. Some people did not believe this. “What about fossils?” they asked. “What has happened to the strange creatures which existed so many years ago?” they asked.
Charles Darwin, a young man just out of university in 1831, was offered a job on a ship on a voyage of discovery around the world. Life on board was tough. Darwin was terribly seasick and was only happy when he was ashore collecting plant samples and observing animals. It was to be the most important journey in his life. It lasted for five years; he returned in October 1836.
Darvin studied nature in South America and in a group of small islands in the South Pacific. On each island there were birds. They were very similar, but the shape of their beaks, and even their eating habits varied. Darwin wondered why they were different. Then he realized that, long before, they had been the same. Each island had different foods available. Only the birds that could eat available food could survive. This might depend on having the right shape of beak. He realized that the same process happened with all living things. Over millions of years, all plants and animals have gradually changed into the forms we see today. What we call “the survival of the fittest’’ he named “natural selection”. Darwin called this slow process of change “evolution”. It explains why many kinds of creatures, whose fossil remains, are no longer alive.
By 1846, he had published an article describing his voyage. He also began to think seriously about evolution and natural selection, and wrote two essays describing his ideas. He did not publish these essays because he realized his ideas proved the Bible’s theory of creation was wrong, and he was worried about the anger and troubles they would cause.
Darwin spent the following years developing his theories and making them perfect. In 1859 he published them in The Origin of Species. It caused a huge row because it seemed to deny what the Bible said. His The Descent of Man (《人類的由來》), 1871, pointed out that mankind had come from the same ancestor. Darwin was upset by the opposition. Other scientists agreed with his ideas and took up his cause. The Church prohibited the teaching of the Theory of Evolution in some countries. However, today most people believe that Darwin was right.

(2022·湖南·衡陽市華新實驗中學八年級期中)Many parents want to let their kids enjoy themselves when they’re still young. Others may think children can’t finish the housework as well as possible. I think they seem to be right, but actually wrong. There are several reasons for doing chores for kids.
Chores help improve life skills(技能). They are young now, but when they grow up, they need to do washing, cooking and cleaning. They can’t learn them at school. Learning these skills at home is important. Chores help kids learn to be independent. Cleaning their rooms or washing their clothes can make them less dependent on others. They will think they can take care of themselves.
Chores help teach them to respect(尊重)others. They often can’t realize what their parents do around the house until they move away from home. They may realize the mess of their rooms by doing housework themselves, so they can respect their parents’ work at home.
Chores help improve planning skills. It feels like there are a lot of things to do in a day. How to spend time on them? Chores can help older kids build good habits early. They learn to plan their time in a right way. It is also an important skill for them in the future.
