Many people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend too much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives. Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. When playing a sport, such as swimming, many people forget about their problems, and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. If you want to feel happier, do something useful for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, or go shopping to buy food for the old.

This summer holiday, some of you might have spent a lot of time playing video games online. However, you won’t be able to do this anymore. On August 30th, 2021, the government cut online gaming time for minors(未成年人)to avoid gaming addiction(沉迷).
A new notice says that game companies can only offer one hour of service to minors from 8 p.m.to 9 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The companies must also make sure that users register(注冊(cè))and log in(登錄)with their real names. Under earlier rules, minors could play online games for 1.5 hours on any day and three hours a day on holidays. But many parents have called for even stricter rules.
When the rules come out, some people support them, while others are surprised at how strict the rules are. Some people think that teenagers can hardly control themselves, so there should be some rules to guide them. Others also show their worries that if kids use their parents’ logins, what should we do?
Teenagers are the future of a country. Protecting their physical and mental health is important. Parents and schools need to let them know more about the related(相關(guān)的)laws and rules.

A special kitchen is next to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital(江西腫瘤醫(yī)院), in Nanchang. Around meal time, families of the hospital’s patients(病人) use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
The kitchen was a breakfast stall(攤) at first, run(經(jīng)營(yíng)) by a husband and wife, Wan Zuocheng and Xiong Gengxiang. One day, in 2003, a young woman asked if she could use it to cook food for her son who was in hospital. Wan and Xiong agreed. Later on, they gave cookers to people for free to help them cook for family in hospital. As it’s known to more people, they began to call their breakfast stall “kitchen of love” because in their eyes it was a place to pass on love.
With more and more people coming and cooking, Wang and Xiong had to turn their stall into a big kitchen while people began to show their willingness(意愿) to share the costs(費(fèi)用). Wan and Xiong finally agreed to set a very low price: 1 yuan to cook a dish and 1.5 yuan to cook soup.
Now they are over 60, but to make it easier for others to use the kitchen, they still get up at 4 a.m. every day to boil water(煮水) and cook rice.
Wan and Xiong always listen to patients’ families talking about their experiences because they believe listening to those people helps them feel better. Xiong says, “It’s necessary to take medicine when we’re ill, however, love is sometimes much better than any other medicine. I feel really happy to run the kitchen and help others.”

(2021·山東·棗莊市第十五中學(xué)八年級(jí)階段練習(xí)) How much time do you spend on exercise? Scientists from the US made a survey (調(diào)查) about people’s exercise time during a day in the city of Chicago in 2021. They suggest (建議) that we should exercise two hours each day to keep healthy. As it shows in the survey, only a quarter of people in the city have enough time to exercise. Most people exercise for less than one hour and half every day. Less than twenty percent of people exercise two to four hours a day. We all know that we should often exercise, but it is not easy to plan enough time to exercise during the busy day. To find the best time to exercise is also important, so we need to know how our bodies function (運(yùn)行) over a 24-hour day. In fact, it’s good to exercise both in the morning and evening. Although keeping on taking exercise isn’t easy when we have lots of work and study, we still need to plan to do it.

(2021·吉林·長(zhǎng)春外國(guó)語(yǔ)學(xué)校八年級(jí)期中) When the well-known pianist Kong Xiangdong first made it big in the city in the early 1990s, he was called the “piano prince”. His smart look and music performance won the hearts of many fans.
Kong’s mother had a great interest in the instrument—and provided him with a keyboard painted on paper. It was on this soundless “instrument” that he began his piano career at the age of 5. His mother put the “keyboard” in the kitchen and asked Kong to practice on it every day. “A pianist has no childhood at all. I didn’t understand the games other children played,” Kong ever said.
When he was 7, Kong’s mother borrowed enough money to buy a second-hand piano for him. He was fascinated by the beautiful sound of a real piano after years at the paper keyboard. So far, he has kept the old piano to remind him of those days.
Kong is now the president of a piano school that has accepted more than 20,000 students during the past years.
“I always told those parents that it was a mistake to push their children to learn the instrument as a career(職業(yè)) unless the child felt he couldn’t live without it,” Kong said.

Different people have different interests in their free time. My friend Li Ming and I often go to the movies when we are free. However, we like different movies.
My favorite movie star is Wu Jing. He is a great actor. He looks handsome. He had a film called the Battle at Lake Changjin《長(zhǎng)津湖》recently. It’s a wonderful war film. And it is very popular these days. I think it’s moving.
But Li Ming likes Shen Teng best. He thinks his movies are funny. He will laugh loudly when he watches them. One of Shen Teng’s movies is Crazy Alien (《瘋狂的外星人》). But I don’t think it’s great. In fact, it’s boring. What’ s more, Li Ming also likes watching Beijing Opera. He even hopes to be a Beijing Opera artist. I don’t like Beijing Opera very much, but my father likes it a lot. My grandma is a gentle old lady. Like many women of her time, she has a talent for sewing(縫紉). She made all my childhood clothes on her own. As a young girl, rather than playing outside with my friends, I liked staying with my grandmother to help her sew. I was so interested in getting the thread(線)through the eyes of the needle(針).
Later, instead of making clothes, my grandmother would sew gloves or insoles(鞋墊)for me. She cannot be with me all the time, but the love passed by her needle and thread warms me.
It was my grandma who sparked my enthusiasm(熱情)for sewing and taught me how to show love and care. Almost a year ago, I was trying to give a birthday present to my friend. Then, I thought, “ Why don’t I sew her a gift?” I decided to make her a pencil case. I cut out the pattern(圖案)from my old skirt, drew a design and started sewing. It took me many days to finish it. The final result wasn’t as pretty as I imagined. But it was the best pencil case that I could make.
Just yesterday, my friend called me and said that every time she sees the pencil case, she thinks of me and the warm feeling.
Sewing is a fantastic art form that can convey(傳達(dá))our love and care.

During the following days, I often got the same call. But I didn’t care much about it. Then one day she kept calling me. Finally I answered the phone and heard a weak voice, “Dad, please come back. I miss you so much! Dad, I’m in so much pain(疼痛)! Mum said you were too busy to take care of me. But, Dad, please kiss me again, OK?” It was difficult to refuse her. I made a sweet kiss on the phone and heard the weak voice say, “Thank you... Dad, I am so ... happy, so... happy...”

Last week, we took my school trip to Shanghai by train. It took us about 12 hours to get there. When we got there, it was quite late. Although I missed my mom a lot, I didn’t call her because I was so tired.
On the first day, I learned how to fold a blanket(疊毯子) by myself. It was great fun and useful to learn. On the second and third days, my classmates and I visited an aircraft carrier (航空母艦). (2020·上海市進(jìn)才中學(xué)北校八年級(jí)期中) Extracted from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Alice was now in a long dark room with doors all round the walls, and she could not see the White Rabbit anywhere.
She tried to open the doors, but they were all locked. “How will I ever get out again?” she thought sadly. Then she saw a little glass table with three legs, and on the top of it was a very small gold key. Alice quickly took the key and tried it in all the doors, but she couldn’t open any.
Then she saw another door, a door that was only forty centimeters high. The little gold key unlocked this door easily. But Alice couldn’t get through it—she was too big. So she lay on the floor and looked through the open door, into a beautiful garden with green trees and bright flowers.
“I’d like to be out there—not in this dark room. Why can’t I get smaller?” It was already a very strange day, and Alice was beginning to think that anything was possible.
After a while she locked the door again, got up and went back to the glass table. She put the key down and then she saw a little bottle on the table. Round the neck of the bottle was a piece of paper with the words DRINK ME in large letters.
“It can be dangerous to drink out of strange bottles,” she said. “What will it do to me?” She drank little bit very slowly. The taste was very nice and very soon Alice finished the bottle.
“I think I’m getting smaller and smaller every minute.” And she was. “And now,” she said happily, “I can get through the little door into that beautiful garden.”
She ran at once to the door. Then she remembered that the little gold key was back on the glass table. She ran back to the table for it, but she was now much too small! The key was high above her, on top of the table. She tried very hard to climb up the table leg, but she couldn’t do it.
At last, tired and sad, she got angry with herself. Soon she saw a little glass box near her on the floor. She opened it, and found a very small cake with the words EAT Me on it.

American and British people both speak English, but sometimes it doesn’t seem like the same language.
First of all they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say all the letters in each word, especially consonants like “t” and “d”. For example, Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know”. However, the British usually pronounce their consonants(輔音)more carefully.
Also, some letters have different sounds. For example, Americans say the “a” in “half” like the “a” in “cat”, but the British say the “a” in “half” like the “a” in “aah”.
Sound is not the only difference between British English and American English.
The two languages have words for same things. For example, the words for clothing are different. Americans use the word “sweater”, but the British say “jumper”.
Many other words and expressions are different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone a friend, you “ring her up”. In America, you “give her a call”. The British use the word “l(fā)ovely” to describe something they like. Americans use the word “cool” or “great”.
There are also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans almost always use the helping verb “do” with the verb “have”. They might say “Do you have an extra pen?” The British often ask the question in a different way. They might say “Have you got an extra pen?”
These differences can be confusing if you are learning English. But there is a reason for the differences. Languages change over time. When the same language is used in different places, it changes differently in each place. This is what happened to English. It also happened to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French, but their French is different from the French spoken in France.
72.Do Americans say all the letters in each word?

73.Who use the word ‘sweater’ instead of ‘jumper’, Americans or the British?
