M: Oh, no. That’s terrible!
W: This is so unlike him. I just came home from the park and I noticed that our front gate was open.
M: Well, I did see him playing on your front grassland earlier today. I think the gate was closed then, though. Have you spoken to the other neighbors on the street? Maybe they’ve seen him.
W: Yeah, but nobody else has seen him. I think the mailman must have forgotten to close the gate.
M: Have you thought about creating a “missing” poster?
W: Yes but my parents haven’t gotten back from work yet. Can you help me?
M: Of course. First, you need a picture of him, so people know what he looks like. Then you should mention some other important information about him. How old is he?
W: He’s 12 years old, so he isn’t exactly young anymore. He has long white hair and he doesn’t see very well. He also has a small brown spot on his back.
M: That’s a great start. I’ll help you print out some posters, and we’ll go put them up on the telephone poles in the neighborhood. Hopefully — oh, Susie, look who it is!
W: Charlie!

18. What is the main idea of the talk?
A. Movies are highly inaccurate.
B. Society seems like magic enough.
C. Science is advancing very quickly.
19. What would happen to the person from 1500 A.D. waking up today?
A.
He would be tired.
B. He would get confused.
C. He would be disappointed.
20. How old is the speaker?
A. Forty. B. Sixty. C. Ninety.
【答案】18. C 19. B 20. B
【解析】
【原文】Many things in our every day lives would have seemed like magic to previous generations. Think of that small device we all love. It lets two people on opposite sides of the globe talk to each other. Or, that box with little people living inside of it — at least our distant ancestors would guess so, if they ever saw a television. But the technologies shown as impossible in movies and books from just 40 years ago are now real. That was when the Hollywood space trend of the 1980s happened. I personally remember watching those films when they came out. Clearly, they missed the mark for what the far future will look like. It’s obvious that scientific progress is moving faster today than people have ever seen. Every generation in history has thought about his own time. A person born in 1000 A.D. could probably understand the world if he woke up five hundred years later. Things would be different, but they would still make sense. But, can you imagine a person from 1500 A.D. waking up today? The other side of this question is this: How much change is too much for us to handle? This is an issue society has never seriously thought about, since we have never seen such rapid transformation in the world. While I am at the age of sixty, I still cannot guess what the world will look like if I reach my 90s.

A
I had just delivered a memorized speech that I had labored over for months, and I was about to learn how the experts judged my performance. The polite audience leaned forward in their folding chairs. Silence fell across the room and the drum rolled in my mind.
The contest organizer announced the third-place winner. Alas, the name was not mine. Then the second, and once again it was not me. At last, the moment of truth came. Either I was about to be bathed in the warmth of victory or regretted the last several months spent preparing. While neither of these came to pass, my heart just sank.
Losing is a part of life, but it was an indescribable depression to drive 200 miles round trip, get up early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four contestants. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois Senate race, he reportedly said, “I felt like the 12-year-old boy who stubbed his toe. I was too big to cry and it hurt too bad to laugh.” Oh yeah, I could relate.
Months before the contest, I had spent hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial Speech Contest. As I read through several biographies, one idea stood out: Lincoln was handed many sound defeats, but he never allowed them to permanently stop his spirit or ambition. I thought “failing successfully” was a very appropriate topic, given the many letdowns Lincoln experienced, and so this became the title of my speech.
Never mind the lost prize money and praise — I did gain a new perspective. Through learning about Lincoln, I discovered that I could fail successfully. Now, whenever I’m faced with a failure, I remember what Lincoln said after his unsuccessful 1854 Senate race, “The path was worn and slippery. My foot slipped from under me, knocking the other out of the way, but I recovered and said to myself, ‘It’s a slip and not a fall.’”
21. How did the author feel when waiting for the announcement of the result?
A. Relieved. B. Thrilled. C. Nervous. D. Desperate.
22. Why did the author mention Lincoln’s failures in Senate race?
A. To show Lincoln’s determination to win Senate race.
B. To present his research findings of Lincoln’s biographies.
C. To compare what they had in common in their experiences.
D. To indicate that he drew inspiration from Lincoln’s failures.
23. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. An Unexpected Speech B. A Slippery Path
C. A Successful Failure D. An Impressive Example
【答案】21. C 22. D 23. C

When did you last write a letter? Properly write one — by hand? In a digital world, where sending a text or email is far more convenient than using snail mail, is the writing on the wall for traditional pen and paper? Well, some people claim that writing still has many benefits, so maybe it’s not time to ditch your ballpoint or fountain pen yet.
These days, when people request things in writing, a typed, electronic document will be accepted. Doing this on a computer means it could be saved, edited, copied and sent via email. But crafting a handwritten document is unique: it requires planning and thought, and, as well as practising your handwriting, it helps you to remember spelling and punctuation.
Some experts believe your brain benefits from using old-fashioned pen and paper. This is particularly relevant for students, where typing notes into a laptop is thought to lack the “tactile feedback (觸覺反饋)” to the brain that contact between pen and paper does. BBC Worklife website quotes Hetty Roessingh from the University of Calgary, who says that taking notes by hand involves cognitive engagement in summarising, paraphrasing, organising, concept and vocabulary mapping. Others agree that handwriting may boost fine motor skills in your hands and fingers.
There are everyday benefits of using pen and paper too. Scribbling (匆忙書寫) notes, shopping lists or messages on the back of an envelope can still be useful, quick and portable. But putting pen to paper in a letter to a friend or loved one can probably have the most impact. Pen pal writer Katherine Moller told the BBC, “In a world where it is so easy to hop online to email or to send a fast text, it is so personal and so precious to know someone chose to turn off the virtual world to spend some time with you.”
So, while digital skills remain important, don’t write off your pens and pencils yet — especially if your smartphone, tablet or laptop runs out of power.
24. The underlined word “ditch” in the first paragraph can be replaced by “________”.
A. abandon B. preserve C. conduct D. employ
25. Which of the following belongs to the features of writing by hand?
A. It can be edited and delivered online.
B. It strengthens people’s cognitive abilities.
C. It lacks the “tactile feedback” to the brain.
D. It promotes motor skills throughout your body.
26. What did Katherine Moller suggest in Para 4?
A. People are supposed to turn off the virtual world.
B. Scribbling notes, shopping lists, or messages saves time.
C. It is quite convenient to communicate with others online.
D. Writing by hand is an important way to care about others.
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. D

As new year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting fireworks to light up the sky. But the fireworks could finally lose their appeal with the growing use of drones (無人機(jī)) for light shows. One obvious example was drone light show in the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics.
Ollie Howitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drones to create a display for London’s new year celebration, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drones were increasingly able to fly in greater density and for longer. Howitt also said there were benefits of drones, “They give out no pollutants, they’re reusable, and there’s no fallout or that kind of thing. So in that sense they are a very sensible choice.”
Robert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbor, also said the decision to use a drone display at the harbor was down to a number of factors, including the impact of fireworks on animals — from wildlife to the pets of boat owners. “They’ve often commented on how much suffering is caused to their pets by the fireworks,” he said.
But not everyone agrees. Hans Rosling, a spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (鋰) batteries which are known not to be all that ‘green’,” he said. “The impact of firework use on the environment has been shown to be minor and very short-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely to be more pollution from a couple of cars driving to an event than caused by fireworks at an event.”
And there are issues with drone light displays, which need to receive specific safety approval from certain authorities. Some suggest the use of drones doesn’t mean shutting off fireworks. The bangs of fireworks create a sound feeling that is hard to replace. Meanwhile, others prefer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of image.
27. Why does the writer talk about the Tokyo Olympics in Para 1?
A. To attract readers’ attention to the Olympics.
B. To advocate setting off fireworks in the new year.
C. To introduce the popular use of drones for light shows.
D. To highlight people’s celebration of this opening ceremony.
28. What did Ollie Howitt think of drone displays?
A. They bring environmental problems.
B. They cause little suffering to the pets.
C. They add color to the new year celebration.
D. They are economical and environmentally-friendly.
29. Which of the following did Hans Rosling agree with?
A. Firework displays last shorter than drone displays.
B. The pollution from fireworks isn’t as much as people think.
C. Drones have less impact on the environment than fireworks.
D. People should abandon the drone displays because of lithium batteries.
30. What are people’s attitudes towards drone light displays?
A. Controversial. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Neutral.

根據(jù)前文“Some students prefer online classes.(一些學(xué)生喜歡上網(wǎng)課)”可知,本段陳述學(xué)生對于網(wǎng)課的不同態(tài)度,D項(xiàng)“Other students really struggle with online classes.(其他學(xué)生在上網(wǎng)課時(shí)真的很吃力)”中的“Other students”與前文“Some students”對應(yīng)。故選D。
【32題詳解】
前文“The syllabus is supposed to be your guide for the entire semester.(教學(xué)大綱應(yīng)該是你整個(gè)學(xué)期的指南)”指出“syllabus教學(xué)大綱”的作用,E項(xiàng)“It tells you what you are doing, when, why, and how.(它告訴你需要做什么,什么時(shí)候,為什么,以及如何做)”中的it指代syllabus,承接上文,繼續(xù)說明它的作用。故選E。
【33題詳解】
根據(jù)前文“However you need to do that or find doing that to be most effective, do it.(不管你需要做什么,或者覺得做什么是最有效的,就去做吧)”可知,當(dāng)確定做某件事是有成效的時(shí)候,應(yīng)該當(dāng)即去做,F(xiàn)項(xiàng)“You do not want to fail a class because you never turned anything in.(你不想因?yàn)閺奈刺峤贿^任何東西就不及格吧)”中“never turned anything in”與前文中的“do it”表述意思相反,但都旨在說明應(yīng)該在截止日期前完成一些事情。故選F。
【34題詳解】
前文“While strategy number one told you that you should not immediately email your professor with a question, that was in regards to asking questions that could be answered by the syllabus.(雖然策略一告訴你,你不應(yīng)該立即給教授發(fā)電子郵件問問題,但這是關(guān)于提出可以由教學(xué)大綱回答的問題)”指出如果能通過教學(xué)大綱解決的問題就不必向教授提出,G項(xiàng)“However, you shouldn’t be afraid to message your professor with thoughtful questions.(然而,你不應(yīng)該害怕向教授提出有想法的問題)”與前文形成轉(zhuǎn)折,指出可以提出有意義的問題,呼應(yīng)段落標(biāo)題“Ask questions提問題”。故選G。

My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells corny jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?” “Of course!” she said. “If we want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” “I know volunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn’t you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead?” She laughed, “Don’t be silly. We will have fun!”
“OK, fellas!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early today because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest snowflake hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said, “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance performance I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh please, oh please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill, or an assembly, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself — and me!!!
But apparently my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.

【答案】“I can’t believe this is happening” was all I could think. I closed my eyes, covered my ears and shrank as low as I possibly could in my chair. After a few seconds, though, I mustered up enough courage to uncover one ear and peek through a half-open eye. That’s when I saw the expression of pure joy on my mom’s face. She was having so much fun that I couldn’t help smiling. My classmates clapped and cheered, and I heard someone say, “Wow! Arizona’s mother is pretty talented!”
My mom turned out to be more than a little OK at performing. She was also good at teaching us the song and the dance steps, too. We learned quickly. By the time of the fair, I was actually proud of her for putting herself out there for the sake of us kids. Our performance at the Winter Fair was a huge success. As we drove home, I said to my mom, “I’m really glad you volunteered to help my class with the performance.” My mom reached back and squeezed my hand. “Thanks for saying that. I can see why you might’ve been embarrassed, but I had such a great time.”
