????Tim Ma's parents came to the United States from Taiwan in the 1970s. They opened a restaurant. It was not a success. They found success in America, however, in computers and engineering. As a result, Ma's parents hoped he would study to become an engineer or doctor. They wanted financial security (安全) for their child.
????Ma grew up in the southern U.S. state of Arkansas. He says the American South was a challenging place to live for a Chinese-American kid in the 1970s and 80s. "There was definitely some racism there. I was the kind of the dopey Asian kid and I would be not punished for that, I would be bullied (欺負) for that."
????Growing up, Ma considered many professions—writer, fireman, even president. But he had a sense early on… "I didn't want to be an engineer." Ma did well in math and science classes in high school. And he ended up choosing to study electrical engineering in college.
????However, later he wanted to leave the engineering world behind and enter the restaurant business. It was in his blood. After all, his parents had owned a Chinese restaurant in Arkansas. His uncle also owned one in New York. His parents, Ma says, could not understand why he would want to leave such a good job to open a restaurant. They had worked long hours but their own restaurant still failed. But Ma remained certain. He was going to do things differently from his parents. He was able to learn from their one major mistake as restaurant owners—they knew very little about the art of cooking. He believes the mistake caused the restaurant to fail.
????So, in 2009, Ma opened his first restaurant in Virginia. It is called Maple Avenue. At Maple Avenue, Ma cooked, cleaned the ovens, fixed equipment and paid bills. His hard work paid off. Ma opened his fourth restaurant last year, Kyirisan in Washington, D.C.
4. Why did Ma's parents want him to become an engineer or doctor?
A. Because of family tradition.
B. Because racism existed there.
C. Because Ma did well in math.
D. Because such jobs are high paid jobs.
5. What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Clever. B. Slow-minded. C. Active. D. Determined.
6. What did Ma finally choose to study in college?
A. Computer. B. Math.
C. Science. D. Electrical engineering.
7. According to Ma, what is important for the success of a restaurant?
A. Long hours' working.
B. Having the best chefs.
C. Knowing about the art of cooking.
D. Choosing the right place for restaurant.

????Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs White. I don't remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. It worried my mother, so one day she went to meet Mrs White and asked her why she never corrected my mistakes or pointed out grammatical errors.
????Mrs White said, "The children are just beginning to get excited about using words and forming sentences. I don't want to dampen (使受挫折) that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won't..." She maybe didn't say it exactly like that. My mother gave me what she could remember. I added in the rest. I grew up learning to use words like that.
????And it occurred to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more, I probably wouldn't be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher to allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression to flower like that. Because to bloom is better than not to bloom.
????I used to misspell 'beautiful' a lot. Pretty is easier to spell but it doesn't hold as much as you mean sometimes. I kept on using 'beautiful'. Eventually the letters settled into their right places. And thanks to Mrs White, I had been writing what I meant even if I couldn't quite spell it out. Life isn't pretty. It's beautiful.
8. What worried the author's mother?
A. The author's learning little.
B. The author's not getting a star.
C. The teacher's not using red pens.
D. The author's uncorrected mistakes.
9. Why didn't Mrs White correct the children's mistakes?
A. She didn't have a red pen.
B. She was too busy to do that.
C. She wanted to protect their excitement.
D. She just ignored the children's mistakes.
10. What is the author's attitude towards Mrs White?
A. Grateful. B. Doubtful. C. Regretful. D. Respectful.
11. Which of the following can best describe Mrs White as a teacher?
A. Humorous. B. Caring. C. Demanding. D. Generous.

A short while ago,I lost access to my WeChat account.I am not sure why it wouldn't let me log in;perhaps it was my ancient,out-of-date phone. But I wasn't upset because it offered me an opportunity to take a break from social media---something more and more people are doing.
In the United States,Twitter and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline(下降) among its younger users. Some of these users may have deserted Twitter and Facebook for other social media platforms, while many others have quit because they felt that social media was having a negative effect on their happiness and overall quality of life.Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of so many Internet trolls leaving negative comments.Ordinary people(like me) are turning away from it because of the feeling that they were spending more time online and enjoying less.
It is not unusual for people to spend two or three hours a day posting or reading posts,to the point where it becomes an addiction. And it is an addiction. There is a chemical in your brain known as dopamine(多巴胺) which is sometimes called the "reward molecule" and its release gives you a feeling of pleasure. For instance, when you post a photo on WeChat and get a hundred likes, you feel happy. That's dopamine at work.
I'm not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages. You could start by leaving your phone at home when you go to school. And it is also a good idea to charge your phone outside of your bedroom at night,as you are unlikely to get a good night's sleep when the notification(通知) bell keeps ringing.
Someday I may reconnect with my WeChat account, but I'm not in a hurry.Life can be more relaxing and just as interesting without it.

A. Upset. B. Joyful. C. Confused. D. Sad.

A. .By illustrating different reasons.
B. By using data.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By doing some research.
14. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? ______
A. The reason for social media addiction.
B. The ways to deal with addiction.
C. People's habits on social media.
D. Chemicals in your brain.
15. What's the writer attitude towards the use of social media? ______
A. Positive. B. Negative.
C. Concerned. D. Neutral.(中立)

Wandering in the street,I passed a noodle shop.I suddenly felt very hungry.I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked,"Hey little girl, you want to cat a bowl?" "But...but I do not carry money..."I shyly replied.
"Okay,I'll treat you." the seller said,"come in,I will cook you a bowl."
A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces,I cried.
"What is it?"He asked.
" Nothing.I am just touched by your kindness!" I said as I wiped my tears. "Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel(殘忍的)!"

Just at that moment, many memories came back into my mind. When I was ill, she was always the one taking care of me. When I had trouble with my study, she never lost faith in me and encouraged me to keep going. When I arrived home during the weekend, she always prepared my favourite food. All her kindness came back to me. I should be grateful for all she had done for me. I realized that I should return home immediately and say sorry to my mother.
When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired. She must have been looking for me everywhere. I was ready for her anger and shouts. However, before I could apologize, my mother saw me and gently said :"oh, honey, thank God, you're back! Come inside. You are probably very hungry?I cooked your favorite noodles, come and eat while they are still hot…" No longer able to control myself, I cried in her arms. "I 'm sorry, mom, please forgive me." I whispered to her through tears, extremely ashamed of myself.
