The national outpouring of grief(悲痛) at the death of two legendary academicians(院士) over the weekend, as if people had lost beloved members of their own families, offers much food for thought.
At 1:02 pm on May 22nd, 2021, liver surgeon Wu Mengchao, 99, died in Shanghai. He is known as the founder of hepatobiliary surgery(肝膽外科) in the country and was the teacher of roughly 80 percent of the nation's experts and doctors specializing in liver surgery today. Wu operated on thousands of patients, and saved at least 16,000 lives. Five minutes later in Changsha, Hunan province, agricultural scientist Yuan Longping died at the age of 91. He was known as the father of hybrid rice who helped lift the nation out of hunger.
With their dedication to science and commitment to the people, the two devoted their lives to saving lives and improving people's livelihoods. Together with generations of their students, they not only made a big difference to the lives of the Chinese people, but also many living in other developing and least-developed countries.
Wu insisted that medical science is humanity while Yuan's lifelong dream was always to enable the Chinese people to fill their own bowls with rice. What makes Wu and Yuan great is not only their achievements, but also their shared attachment to the people. The public's spontaneous(自發(fā)的) outpouring of grief at their deaths, which has been rare in the country for decades, shows how much their down-to-earth dedication to improving people's lives touched hearts throughout the country.
Yuan and Wu are just two representatives of the large numbers of scientific workers that have devoted their lives to their research, giving the country's people-centered development principle with more practical meaning. The country needs more scientists to inherit and carry forward their spirit. Even those in other walks of life can draw inspiration from the two academicians' commitment to their dreams, care for the people, and unconcern about material enjoyment, so as to make the best of what life grants for themselves and others.

????On a recent day, Katie Baldwin took a break from work to talk about moving from a wealthy neighborhood near New York City to an organic farm on Long Island. "Farming for where I grew up was a very unusual career choice, said the 32-year-old American, "but everybody belongs to the land in their own way. None of us should feel separate from it.”
????Katie was raised in an upper middle class town outside New York, where most people never thought about working on a farm. Today, Katie grows potatoes, wheat and other crops at Quail Hill, a property in Amagansett, New York.
????In the United States, organic farming is a growing industry. Women operate some of the best-known organic farms on Long Island. Women make up a little more than 37 percent of all organic farmers nationwide. That information comes from the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Experts predict women's share in farming is likely to continue to grow.
????"The new young farmers choose organic farming with their desire to have an influence on society," Katie and several farmers said. She said, "They are choosing it to protect natural resources for future generation, to fight climate change, to feed their community good and healthy food.''
????New York has about 1, 000 certified organic farms, making it the third largest in the country, and California and Wisconsin are the first and second, the USDA says. These farms make up nearly four percent of the state's farmland, compared with a national average of around 0. 6 percent.
??? Although organic farming is growing quickly, it comes with high labor costs and sometimes smaller harvests than commercial farming. So it can be a difficult business for new farmers. "When I look now at the starting of the farm, it seems really audacious," Katie Baldwin said. "But in that environments in 2008, everybody had lost their jobs and there weren't jobs. So, it didn't feel strange to start something," she said.
8、What does Katie think of working at the organic farm?
A. It’s unacceptable. B. It's worthwhile.
C. It's unforgettable. D. It's challenging.
9、Why do the young people want to work as farmers?
A. To find a suitable job. B. To earn healthy food.
C. To stop climate change. D. To help the society develop.
10、Which can replace the underlined word "audacious" in the last paragraph?
A. hopeful B. dangerous C. daring D. reasonable
11、What can be inferred from the text?
A. American women are good at organic farming
B. Organic fanning will become a good employment.
C. Many American communities lack abundant food.
D. Starting organic farming needs careful consideration.
Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in maths and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by the College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programmes in public schools also help to add to a students sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship troubles, and other troubles. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse found that students who took part in school music programmes were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programmes encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries. Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally, they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
12、What can we learn about education with music classes?
A. It allows schools to make more profits.
B. It leads to a lot of emotional problems easily.
C. It helps students to improve their schoolwork.
D. It has a great influence on the culture of the country.
13、What do the two studies seem to show?
A. Not all students take part in music lessons.
B. Students with great success like to attend music lessons.
C. Music plays an important role in students’ success.
D. Students having music classes are better in all lessons.
14、The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that ________.
A. different cultures have different styles of music
B. music makes cross-country communication possible
C. Japan has a good international relationship with America
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano
15、What is the best title for the text?

would like to do是固定短語,意為“想要做某事”,故在like后加to。

Dear Vincent,
I’ve received your email and known that you and your family are coming to China in near future. I’d like to introduce you to visit Xi’an, the capital of Shanxi province in China. As one of the oldest cities in Chinese history, Xi’an is one of Four Great Ancient Capitals of China because it has been the capital of some of the most important dynasties in Chinese history, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, the Sui and Tang dynasties. It is not a modern city like Shanghai, but it’s more restful. And there are some tourist attractions, such as Terracotta Warriors and Horses and Huaqing Lake. Looking forward to your reply.
