When I was five years ld, I played the rle f the turtle in a play rganized by my lder sister. I had ne line at the end, when I beat the sleeping rabbit t the finish line: slw and steady wins the race.
I’ve always felt that thse wrds guided my life. I was never the fastest; I was rarely an A student. But as the careers f thers paused, I kept ging. My gal was always the same: t learn mre this year than I had last year.
When I see slw students, that’s what I think f. Are thse the students wh will keep learning ver their entire lifetime, and leave the “quick” students far behind? The gal f educatin is nt t gain as much knwledge as quickly as pssibly, but t gain useful knwledge and keep it. As such, I wuld prefer a slw, thughtful student t a fast, superficial ne. As a teacher, I dn’t care hw “fast” smene learns smething. We prcess infrmatin differently. T use myself as an example, I tended t be cmparatively slw in my advanced undergraduate mathematics classes. In retrspect, I’ve cme t realize that ne f the ways I learn is “errr-based”. That is, I effectively learn by making mistakes.
I seldm wrried abut “slw learners” when teaching medical students. I knew these yung men and wmen culd learn. Like in s many ther prfessins, knwledge is nly a part f being a dctr. I spent decades learning enugh t be a dctr and decades mre keeping up and imprving. It never stps, and never shuld.

If yu were asked t imagine a scientist, what image wuld cme t yur mind? The idea that mst f the kids have is a man wearing a white lab cat with messy hair, big glasses, and cups f clrful liquids giving ff cluds f smke. As fr adults, the majrity regard scientists as strange peple wh spend a lt f time wrking in a lnely lab. Hwever, the reality is quite different.
Recently I’ve had a chance t take part in a scientific experience far frm my lab and int Csta Rica. It has a large amunt f wildlife due t its gegraphical placement between Nrth and Suth America. It is hme t mre than 500,000 species, which represents nearly 4% f the species wrldwide!
First we wrked t prtect wildlife at a leatherback turtle (棱皮龜) prtectin center. We helped the vlunteers t remve rubbish frm the beach t create a safe envirnment fr turtle eggs t cme ut. After that we stayed at Munt Arenal where we studied seismic (地殼的) activity relating t earthquakes. During ur stay at Arenal, we rde ver the muntainus areas and tk a lng walk thrugh the rainfrest. On the last day we gt a prfessinal intrductin f rcket (火箭) science and learned abut new rcket technlgy that will be used n the internatinal space statin.
During my Csta Rica experience, I knw that being a scientist desn’t mean wrking in a lab all day and night. A scientist is the ne wh lves learning and getting a better understanding f the wrld frm helping prtect wildlife, learning abut earthquakes r inventing rckets. I think that science is s much mre than wearing a lab cat and mixing chemicals. Kids need t be aware f the excitement and adventures science can bring!

Fr almst all f human histry, the Earth's ppulatin has tended t be yunger. But since the last Wrld Ppulatin Day n July 11, a majr shift ccurred: There are nw mre peple aged 65 and lder than there are under age five.

Many cuntries in Latin America and Asia are aging much faster and have less time and resurces t prepare health-care systems.
What are the cnsequences f an lder glbal ppulatin? Supprting elderly peple is mre expensive than caring fr yung nes. Pressing issues arise like hw t prvide lng-term care, and maintain a labr frce. In develped regins like Eurpe, where 10 percent f the ppulatin ver age 50 is childless, elderly care is a majr wrry.
“Nt a single cuntry has been able t change declining trends in fertility (生育) despite gvernment requests fr peple t reprduce as has been dne acrss Eurpe and in Japan,” Kaneda says. “The aging trend is cntinuus. ”
But declining fertility rates can have psitive effects t, says Kaneda. When fertility rates decline but the ppulatin hasn't aged yet, gvernments can spend mre n secndary and higher educatin, and benefit the ecnmy. Bth Thailand and Suth Krea have seized the pprtunity during this ideal perid.
