I moved to the United States as a teenager. The adjustment to a new place was difficult. But there was major stress in my life at that time:I was the only member of my family who spoke English, meaning I had to step up when we dealt with a shop assistant, a waiter and so on. However, there was another universal language I loved to learn as a child:art.
Although I connected myself with drawing and painting while in school, I mostly dismissed art as a path to a career. Since my dad always said “Think about the future”, I did not think he would support the study of art once I went to college. But, to my surprise, it was my parents who suggested just that and urged me to apply to technical and liberal arts schools.
I was admitted into industrial design. It's basically to design products and services. I could be doing something more technical or something more related to problem-solving. It was no easy task to do the course including metalworking, woodworking and model making. In one class I just drew cubes for an entire month, which led me to a question: “Wow! Do I really want to do this? ”But I finally survived the course.
Now I am a design strategist for Marshall Moya Design, a famous architecture and interior design company. I have experience in exhibit design, product design and website design, apart from which I enjoy developing public art in my free time.
Throughout my career, I've picked up different things along the way. The best way to learn in my opinion is through working, therefore, get as many projects as you can. Industrial design makes you an all-round person.

It is common for adults to use “baby talk” when interacting with babies. This way of speaking attempts to imitate the sounds babies make when they first try to talk. But is this form of communication helpful to a child's development?
Several studies have suggested a clear link between parental language methods and a child's early language development. Studies showed that language learning in babies was improved when parents spoke more than a few simple words and used a wider vocabulary. Earlier research found that the style of speech used by parents to communicate with their baby could have an influence on language development.
One such speaking style is known as “parentese”. Research has shown that babies react better to this kind of language in the first months of life. Generally, parentese involves adults speaking in a higher voice and at a slower speed. The language is simplified, while sentences are short and often repeated. Studies from the past 30 years have confirmed that babies spoken to in parentese developed larger vocabularies throughout the first three years of life.
A new study on the subject, a project of the University of Washington's Institute for Learning&Brain Sciences, examined whether parents can be effectively taught methods to improve their parentese skills.
Naj a Ferjan Ramírez. working in the Institute for Learning&Brain Sciences, said that the parents involved in the research were first shown the importance of language input for their baby's development. Parents were then given suggestions on how to use different parentese methods, and then rated on how well they used these methods with their child. She added that the new study is important because there are still a lot of parents with little knowledge about how to use parentese to help their child. This was one reason the researchers included parents from different cultural and economic groupings.

While many countries love their tea, UK citizens are particularly proud of being “tea people”. The average UK citizen consumes nearly 2 kilograms of tea each year.
Tea only made its way to England in large quantities in the first years of the 17th century. Tea from China and a few other Asian countries was being sold more widely in England at that time. Then tea was getting more and more popular among different social classes.
There are many varieties of tea. Black tea mixtures are still the most common type drunk in the UK. Black tea is dark in colour, because the leaves have been allowed to oxidize (氧化) before drying. This is why we usually serve it with milk, although it is not uncommon to drink it black or with lemon. You may still find tea made with loose tea leaves, served up in a pot, and poured into the best china cups with saucers (茶托) for visitors.
Tea is still a large part of daily life in the UK today, but it seems to be on the decrease. The amount of tea sold in the UK fell by more than 10% in the five years leading up to 2002,and has been dropping ever since. Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone, and most restaurants report selling more than twice as many cups of coffee as they do tea. More than £1 billion was spent on coffee in high street stores in 2013, more than twice what was spent on tea bags.
Still, what goes around comes around; it's sure to become fashionable again.

Ⅱ.閱讀七選五(共5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分)
16 One day, when I was perhaps six years old,I was walking with my father on a crowded street. All of a sudden, the normal flow of pedestrian traffic backed up as people tried to avoid a large object on the sidewalk. To my astonishment, the object turned out to be a human being, a man lying unconscious against a building. 17 Certainly no one made eye contact. As we walked by, my father—the model of a loving, caring gentleman—pointed to a bottle in a paper bag and told me that the poor soul on the sidewalk just needed to sleep it off. Then the drunken man began to murmur senselessly. My father warned me not to go near, saying “You never know how he'll react. ”
18 I had spent the previous 12 months traveling in poor Asian cities, but even by those standards this was a scene of misery. In addition to being desperately poor, the locals had to live in the extremely hot climate, ridiculously huge crowds and a fairly strong wind blowing dust everywhere. Suddenly a man carrying a huge bag of peanuts called out in pain and fell to the ground. 19 A half dozen sellers ran from their stands to help, leaving unattended what might have been the totality of their possessions. One put a blanket under the man's head; another opened his shirt; a third questioned him carefully about the pain; a fourth fetched water; a fifth kept onlookers from crowding around too closely; a sixth ran for help. 20 The performance could have passed for a final exam at a paramedic (護理人員) school.
A.I then witnessed an astonishing scene.
B.Not one of the passers-by seemed to notice that it was a man.
C.This was totally different from the bitter experience I had in New York.
D.Within minutes, a doctor arrived, and two other locals joined in to assist.
E.I soon came to see that day's lesson as basic knowledge for a New Yorker.
F.I'll always remember a lesson that I learned as a boy growing up in New York City.
G.Yet many years later I had a very different experience while visiting a market in Rangoon.

Ⅵ.概要寫作(滿分25分)
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內容寫一篇60詞左右的內容概要。
An old saying goes that a near neighbour is better than a distant cousin. This saying has fully proved that neighbours are so significant in our life.
In the past, neighbours helped one another build houses and clear fields. They could offer timely help when someone was in trouble. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment. They shared happiness and sorrow from time to time, which brought a harmonious atmosphere.
However, nowadays, lack of communication and interaction between neighbours is a norm. Close relationship between neighbours is not common in our cities. A family may not even know the other families that live next door to them. We live in an age of machines and the Internet, and each family has its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbours as much as they once did. Machines and the Internet keep people apart. In our grandparents' time, women met while they hung out the washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed their lawns. Today, they can't hear anything above the noise of their power lawn mowers. And women stay inside with their electrical dryers. Children are inside watching their favourite TV shows or playing computer games.
Is the idea of being a good neighbour old-fashioned? In 1965,a power cut hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left helpless. Suddenly everyone shared the same problem, and the largest city became a group of eight million neighbours. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other people helped direct traffic. Trapped in elevators, people played word games and helped keep each other in good spirits. In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbour is important.
