Olympic flame's arrival sparks 2022 Winter Games
Carrying a message f peace and slidarity, the flame fr the 2022 Winter Olympic Games arrived t a warm welcme in Beijing n Wednesday Oct. 20.
Witnessed by rganizers, sprts figures, perfrmers and students, the flame－h(huán)used in a red lantern－drew crwds f nlkers as it was escrted by vlunteers int a ceremny held at Beijing's Olympic Twer. The flame arrived early n Wednesday after being flwn frm Greece, the birthplace f the Olympics, where it was lit tw days earlier.
Public exhibitins f the trch and the traditinal natinal relay in the hst cuntry have been streamlined fr the Beijing Games due t COVID-19 precautinary measures.
Cai Qi, secretary f the Cmmunist Party f China Beijing Municipal Cmmittee and president f the rganizing cmmittee fr the Games, lit a cauldrn n a stage using a trch ignited frm the lantern's flame. The lighting f the cauldrn signaled that the curtain had been raised n the Beijing Winter Olympics, which run frm Feb 4 t Feb 20. Games events are scheduled in three znes－dwntwn Beijing, the capital's nrthwest Yanqing district and c-hst Zhangjiaku in Hebei prvince.
Due t the pandemic, Games rganizers have cut back the traditinal trch relay t a small-scale event. The relay will take place in three hst areas and invlve abut 1,200 trchbearers due t COVID-19 cntainment prtcls.
The relay is scheduled fr Feb 2 t Feb 4, with the rute cnnecting landmarks, histrical sites and majr turism attractins in Beijing and Zhangjiaku. The culture and warm hspitality f the hsts will be n display, the rganizing cmmittee f the Games said.
"As an icnic cultural element f the Olympic Games, the trch relay plays a significant rle in prmting the hst's internatinal image while spreading the message f peace, slidarity, friendship and health," said Zhang Jiandng, a vice-mayr f Beijing and executive vice-president f the rganizing cmmittee.
The shrtened trch relay with reduced crwds, will help ensure the health and safety f all participants as well as that f lcal cmmunities. The preparatin wrk fr the Games has been adapted t the pandemic situatin, Zhang added.

With Africa keen t develp its energy sectr, China is seen as a reliable partner fr the cntinent thanks t the Belt and Rad Initiative and ther platfrms fr engagement between the tw sides.
In a seminar n Wednesday, participants said African cuntries need a reliable partner t vercme the technlgical and financial barriers t unleashing the ptential f their energy riches and drive their industrializatin plans.
Speakers at the seminar, c-hsted by the China-Africa Center at the Africa Plicy Institute in Kenya and the China Natinal Petrleum Crpratin Ecnmic and Technlgical Research Institute, agreed that China has the perfect credentials as a partner fr Africa.
The participants pinted t the cmplementary advantages arising frm cperatin between Africa and China and the huge ptential fr cllabratin in energy and industrial develpment.
China's experience with bsting its wind turbine and slar phtvltaic panel industries can be highly valuable fr African cuntries and cmpanies that wish t develp their wn prductin facilities, they said.
Malclm Marega, an il and gas cnsultant, said it is cheaper fr African cuntries t invest in slar technlgy cmpared with electricity lines fr serving remte areas.
"Electricity lines mving frm Kenya's capital, Nairbi, fr instance, t a very remte part f the cuntry might be highly cstly. Whereas, using slar technlgy it's easier and pssible t have micrgrids that serve an entire cmmunity cst effectively," Marega said.
"Sme f these technlgies can be enhanced and replicated in varius parts f the cntinent."
Peter Kagwanja, chief executive at the Africa Plicy Institute, said China-Africa cperatin in energy is nt new and that the relatinship must be upgraded even further.
Kagwanja highlighted the benefits that have cme frm the Frum n China-Africa Cperatin, a platfrm fr exchanges and cllabratin between the tw sides.
"We must shift ur use f energy gradually frm fssil-fuel energy t green energy. This will create a new area f emplyment as we expand green energy t realize ur gals f an eclgical civilizatin.
"We are emerging int a new era f cperatin in industrializatin and energy which has been impsed n us by COVID-19."
