Never t ld t learn: 86-year-ld in SW China pursues lifelng learning
Wang Dakang, a celebrity in his hmetwn f Leshan city in Suthwest China's Sichuan prvince fr his inspiratinal life stry, is a mdel f lifelng learning, Chengdu-based Red Star News reprted n Wednesday.
Wang, was brn in 1935 in the twn f Muzi. In the 1980s, he became the first persn in China t accmplish a rund trip f the cuntry using nly a bicycle.
Frm Leshan, he cycled China's 29 prvinces, municipalities and autnmus regins between 1981 and 1984. Over the curse f 1,278 days, he traveled mre than 60,000 kilmeters and later was invited t write his experience int a bk. Hwever, his manuscript was at first rejected fr revisin.
In rder t better edit his bk fr publicatin, Wang, wh was a middle schl graduate, decided t cntinue his studies and g t cllege. At the age f 61, he enrlled at Sichuan Nrmal Cllege in Sichuan prvince in 1996 and majred in jurnalism.
His path fr knwledge did nt stp there. In 2000, Wang began his graduate studies in the same cllege and studied travel literature. In 2008, he was admitted int Leshan Nrmal University as an undergraduate majring in music and graduated in 2012. His purpse f learning had changed frm writing a better bk t acquiring knwledge, accrding t Wang. Wang's 560,000-wrd bk detailing his trip in the 1980s was finally published in 2016.
At present, Wang lives in his hme in a village in Leshan, where he spends his days fllwing carefully planned rutines. Every mrning, Wang gets up at 4:30 am t exercise fr half an hur. His study starts at 6 am, during which he will read and take ntes frm Peple's Daily, a leading newspaper in China, fllwed by writing in his diary. Other daily activities include practicing calligraphy, learning English, riding his bicycle and playing musical instruments.
"Right nw I just feel there's nt enugh time every day as there is s much t learn," Wang said. "I want t cntinue learning as I grw lder and I will study until the very end," he added.

Cancer imaging center bsts hpes
An advanced cancer imaging center built with Chinese aid near Nairbi is expected t greatly facilitate treatment f patients in the regin.
The Integrated Mlecular Imaging Centre at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hspital, in Kiambu cunty, is the first f its kind in the regin. It was engineered, prcured, built and financed by China Jiangxi Internatinal Ecnmic& Technical Cperatin.
The center was develped as part f the Kenyan gvernment's effrt t expand access t cancer treatment in the cuntry. It has a capacity f 100 patients and their families.
Speaking at the fficial pening n Saturday, Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya's president, said the gvernment had invested in the screening and treatment facility in respnse t rising cases f cancer-related deaths in the cuntry.
"We are making these investments in recgnitin f the fact that cancer is the third-leading cause f death in Kenya, and prjectins shw that the burden f the disease will grw by apprximately 85 percent by 2030, unless we as a gvernment take bld steps t address the challenges related t this disease, he said
"The Integrated Mlecular Imaging Centre Hspitality and Accmmdatin Centre will ensure that a family can stay clse t their lved ne receiving treatment here, while als prviding accmmdatin fr utpatients frm far afield as they await subsequent runds f treatment. This will eliminate the need fr the lng back-and-frth jurneys that levy a heavy tll n their health and recvery."
The hspital is just ne result f increasing technlgical cllabratin between Kenya and China. It was built with the help f a cncessinal lan by the Exprt and Imprt Bank f China.
In 2011 a memrandum f understanding was signed between the Chinese and Kenyan gvernments relating t Chinese supprt in preparatin, design, develpment f hspital infrastructure, equipment, persnnel and capacity building.
Kenyan authrities tk charge f the $104 millin hspital in May 2019, but China has cntinued t ffer peripheral supprt in terms f capacity building and acquiring equipment.
When the hspital, abut 45 minutes' drive frm dwntwn Nairbi, was handed ver it was already equipped with 21 intensive care unit beds and 10 high dependence unit beds with specialized equipment and a medical linear acceleratr machine in the nclgy department.
As the gvernment cntinues t expand the use f such equipment, Kenyatta said the greatest bttleneck in cancer management in Kenya has been the lack f adequate facilities fr early diagnsis and accurate stage gruping, a challenge he said the facility seeks t reslve.
