Inside, there was a high ceiling. “Did this use to be a bank?” many visitors would ask. But it had, in fact, always been a newsroom.I was young and shy when I first went to work there, and it probably took me a month before I talked to any of the other reporters. But eventually, they became my best friends, the core of my social lifeMy second newsroom was the airy top floor of a historic building in the state capital of Maryland. It was smaller and less grand but far more energizing. My colleagues were older. I learned so much about how to be a reporter from overhearing their phone interviews. This past summer, several American newspapers announced they would be closing their newsrooms. Many local newspapers have gone out of business in recent years, victims of declining circulation and shrinking advertising dollars. Then along came the coronavirus pandemic (新冠病毒疫情), and so many of us were sent home to work from there. The pleasant surprise is that we have all succeeded brilliantly in working remotely. But some managers have looked at this success and thought: “Why would we need to return to the newsroom?”I worry that they are making a big mistake. A physical newsroom sends a powerful message to a community: “We are here for you.” At my first job, strangers could walk right through the door and straight up my desk. We treasured that visibility. But I also think about the collaboration (合作)— of the times I would overhear colleagues talking about a story and realize that I had some useful information for them. Sometimes, a colleague would see me in the hall and give me a story idea. I can’t wait to get back to my newsroom.24How was the author’s first newsroom different from the second one?AIt sat in a big city. BIt used to be a bank.CIt was visitor-friendly. DIt was in a grand building.25How did the author benefit from her second newsroom?AShe overcame her shyness.BShe made her best friends there.CShe could overhear others’ argument.DShe gained experience from her colleagues.26What does the underlined part “this success” in paragraph 4 refer to?AJournalists worked effectively at home.BNewspaper circulation was increasingCNewspaper advertising was profitable.DJournalism survived the pandemic.27Why is the author against closing newsrooms?ANewsrooms serve as a close tie.BShe will be out of work as a result.CNewspapers will disappear due to it.DIt is against the will of communities.C2022·安徽馬鞍山·二模)In 2007, the African Union announced an ambitious project—to plant the Great Green Wall (GGW), a band of trees that would stretch the length of the Sahel. The GGW is an ecological restoration project designed by African people for African people. Heavy rains, droughts, wildfires and landslides have all become common throughout the world. But nowhere is quite like the Sahel. In this huge African region, climate change has materialized in a dramatic manner. In some cases, the severe conditions have left people with no option other than to migrate elsewhere to survive. It was with all of this in mind that the extraordinary, but heavily debated project was first put forward. Fourteen years have passed since the initiative formally kicked off. The stated goal was to create a 15-kilometre-wide, 8, 000-kilometre-long green belt of trees and other plants that, by 2030, would span(跨越)the entire width of the Sahel, from Senegal to Djibouti. Overall, 100 million hectares(公頃)of land would be restored by 2030. Once completed, it was announced, the wall could end up capturing(俘獲)250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, while its creation and upkeep could create ten million jobs in rural areas. Looking at the project as a whole, there’s still a long way to go. According to a status report by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, about four million hectares of degraded land have been restored. This means that progress towards the 100 million hectares target stands at just four per cent. “When we started restoring the soil, we realized the area at risk was much wider than we initially thought,” explains Elvis Paul Tangem, the African Union’s GGW coordinator. “We had few funds to push the initiative as much as we wanted to. There was skepticism among investors, who didn’t understand the project, but also among the African states themselves, which needed time to figure out if the GGW was a priority.”28What is the purpose of the GGW project?ATo improve local ecology. BTo develop rural economy.CTo predict climate patterns. DTo strengthen regional ties.29What do the statistics in paragraph 3 show of the initiative?AThe service period. BThe total budget.CThe targeted groups. DThe expected benefits.30How does Elvis Paul Tangem feel about the project?ASkeptical. BWorried. CConfident. DSatisfied.31What message does the author intend to convey in the text?AAfrican countries should stand together.BThe progress of the GGW project is slow.CFighting climate change is our top priority.DNatural disasters are worse than we thought.D2022·黑龍江·哈九中二模)Video calls are a common occurrence, but have you imagined being able to touch the person on the other end of the line? Scientists are making this a reality. Researchers at the University of New South Wales Australia, have invented a soft skin stretch device (SSD), a haptic device that can recreate the sense of touch. Haptic technology imitates the experience of touch by stimulating localized areas of the skin in ways that are similar to what is felt in the real worlds through force, vibration or motion. Vibration is the most common haptic technology today and has been built into many electronic devices, such as one attached to the back of a trackpad in laptops, which simulates a button clicking. However, haptic feedback with vibration becomes less sensitive when used continuously. The existing technology also has great difficulty recreating the sense of touch with objects in virtual environments or located remotely according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead author of the study. The new technology overcomes issues with existing haptic devices. The research team introduced a novel method to recreate the sense of touch through soft, artificial “muscles”. “Our three-way directional skin stretch device, built into the fingertips of the wearable haptic glove we also created, is like wearing a second skin—it’s soil, stretchable and mimics the sense of touch—and will enable new forms of haptic communication to enhance everyday activities, ” said Thanh Nho Do, senior author of the study. It works like this: Imagine you are at home and you call your friend who is in Australia. You wear a haptic glove with the SSDs and your friend also wears a glove with integrated 3D force sensors. If your friend picks up an object, it will physically press against your friend’s lingers. And the glove with 3D force sensors will measure these interactions. The force signals can be sent to your glove so your device will generate the same 3D forces, making you experience the same sense of touch as your friend. The haptic devices could be applied in various scenes, allowing users to feel objects inside a virtual world or at a distance. This could be especially beneficial during such times like the COVID-19 pandemic when people rely on video calls to stay connected with loved ones. Or it could be used in medical practices. Doctors can feel a patient’s organ tissues with surgical(手術(shù)的)tools without touching them.32What can we learn about the SSD?AIt imitates the sense of touch through animal skin.BIt mainly uses vibration technology.CIt makes virtual haptic communication possible.DIt takes the shape of a glove.33What does the last but one paragraph mainly talk about?AThe advantages of the new haptic glove.BAn explanation of how the haptic device works.CThe applications of the new haptic technology.DA personal experience of using SSDs during a video call.34According to the author, in which of the following situation could the new haptic device benefit people?AInterviewing someone face to face.BRecreating organ tissues.CEvaluating surgeries from a distance.DFeeling a silk scarf being sold online.35What’s the main purpose of the text?ATo encourage the use of a new product.BTo introduce the development of haptic technology.CTo compare different haptic devices.DTo inform readers of a new invention. It's time to break out that picture of you as a kindergarten graduate.
