Just 16 at the time, Tsao wondered what happened to the old ropes. He asked the gym owners and found out the ropes had to be discarded regularly due to safety regulations. He was surprised to find that so many ropes were sent to landfills. This discovery inspired him to find a solution to the environmental issue of climbing rope waste. He considered possible ideas and ways to up cycle the discarded ropes, deciding to turn them into leashes (拴狗帶) for dogs.Once he had made his plan, Tsao contacted all the climbing gyms in Washington State, introducing his idea of recycling old ropes. Some were doubtful at first, but many gyms agreed to donate their used ropes. Tsao spent months testing and designing his products and filling documents to become a nonprofit organization which he called Rocks2Dogs.To make the leashes, Tsao and volunteers first wash and dry the ropes. They cut them into different lengths, ranging from4 to 10 feet, and then burn the ends to prevent them from fraying (磨損). They add a clip and handle to each end, and cover the leash’s hardware with shrink tape.Because making the leashes now is a full-time job, Tsao has asked his friends, family and neighbors for help. “We have made and sold over a thousand leashes, which add up to over 10,000 feet of rope being saved from landfills,” says Tsao. The leashes come in various colors. There are also half-price leashes made from ropes with slight imperfections. These start at $7.49 while most other leashes start at $ 14.99. To date, the nonprofit has raised more than $ 35,000. Much of this money has been donated to animal shelters.24What did Tsao discover?ARock climbing might do harm to health.BThe gym didn’t obey safety regulations.CMany old climbing ropes went to waste.DLandfills caused damage to the environment.25What was Tsao’s plan?ATo call on climbing gyms to donate ropes.BTo transform retired ropes into dog leashes.CTo upcycle old leashes saved from landfills.DTo set up an environmental organization.26What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?AEfforts to promote the ropes.BReasons for starting Rocks2Dogs.CWays to reuse discarded waste.DSteps for making the leashes.27What is the last paragraph intended to tell us?ATsao succeeds in the leash business.BAnimal protection gain’s more attention.CMore people volunteered to help Tsao.DLeashes are very popular with pet owners.C2022·浙江紹興·二模)When kids melt down in the middle of a crowded store or at a holiday dinner with extended family, it can be extremely frustrating. But parents can help kids learn self-control and teach them how to respond without just acting on impulse (沖動).Teaching self-control is one of the most important things that parents can do for their kids because these skills are some of the most important for success later in life. By learning self-control, kids can make appropriate decisions and respond to stressful situations in ways that can yield positive outcomes. For example, if you say that you’re not serving ice cream until after dinner, your child may cry, plead, or even scream in the hopes that you will give in. But with self-control, your child can understand that a temper tantrum (發(fā)牌氣) means you’ll take away the ice cream for good and that it’s wiser to wait patiently.Difficult as it may be, resist the urge to yell when you’re disciplining your kids. Instead, be persistent and matter of fact. During a child’s meltdown, stay calm and explain that yelling, throwing a tantrum, and slamming doors are unacceptable behaviors that have consequences. Your actions will show that tantrums won’t get kids the upper hand. For example, if your child gets, upset in the grocery store after you’ve explained why you won’t buy candy, don’t give in – thus demonstrating that the tantrum was both unacceptable and ineffective. Also, consider speaking to your child’s teachers about classroom settings and appropriate behavior expectations. Ask if problem-solving is taught or demonstrated in school. And model good self-control yourself. If you’re in an annoyed situation in front of your kids, tell them why you’re frustrated and then discuss potential solutions to the problem. For example, if you’ve misplaced your keys, instead of getting upset, tell your kids the keys are missing and then search for them together. If they don’t turn up, take the next constructive step. Show that good emotional control and problem solving are the ways to deal with a difficult situation.28What is the main idea of paragraph 2?AImpulsive responses lead to frustration.BKids’ melting down is a common phenomenon.CParents should help kids make decisions appropriately.DTeaching kids self-control is a must for their future success.29What is the parents’ best attitude towards a child’s meltdown?AFirm and factual.BCalm and tolerant.CCautious and objective.DAnnoyed and disapproving.30Which of the following best explains the underlined part in paragraph 3?AEmotional outburst is unexpected behaviors.BKids shouldn’t be responsible for their behaviors alone.CTemper loss won’t give the kids a position of advantage.DTantrums are ineffective in interpersonal communications.31What message is conveyed in the last paragraph?ASlow and steady wins the race.BGood example is the best sermon.CExperience is the mother of wisdom.DSuccess comes from thorough self-control.D2022·江蘇·三模)Researchers say a new electrical device placed in three paralyzed patients has helped them walk again. The lower bodies of the three patients were left paralyzed after they suffered spinal (脊柱的) cord injuries. But a device implanted in the spinal cord was able to send electrical signals to the muscles to permit them to stand, walk and exercise.Scientists have discovered that neurons—which receive and send signals for muscle movements—often still work in injured patients with serious spinal cord injuries. However, past research into spinal cord injuries has centered on the stimulation of neurons. Now in the latest experiment led by Gregoire Courtine and Jocelyne Bloch of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, three paralyzed men were implanted a new electrical device designed to copy an action of the brain, in which it sends signals to the spinal cord that result in muscle movement. When the spinal cord receives the brain signals, it stimulates a collection of nerve cells that can activate different muscles. The researchers reported that all three patients who got the spinal cord implants were able to take their first steps within an hour after receiving them. Over the next six months, the patients regained the ability to take part in more advanced walking activities, the study found. They were also able to ride bicycles and swim in community settings.Unlike other attempts to help paralyzed patients walk by stimulating nerves through the back of the spine, Courtine said that his team redesigned the devices so signals would enter the spine from the sides. This method permits more direct targeting and activation of spinal cord areas, he said. The team then developed artificial intelligence (AI) systems linked to the device. The AI controls electrodes on the device to send signals to stimulate individual nerves that control muscles needed for walking and other activities. However, because the patients’ muscles were weak from not being used, they needed help with supporting their weight, the researchers said. It also took some time for them to learn to work with the technology. Still, Bloch said, “The more they train, the more they start lifting their muscles, the more fluid it becomes.”32What can be inferred from paragraph 2?ACourtine and Bloch have found that neurons in paralyzed patients still work.BThe new electrical device can imitate the brain to send signals to the spinal cord.CThree paralyzed men recovered with the help of a new electrical device.DStimulating the neurons is the focus of the latest research into spinal .cord injuries.33How does the new device stimulate the spinal cord areas more directly?ABy stimulating nerves through the back of the spine.BBy using the AI system.CBy making signals enter the spine from the sides.DBy sending the signals to the brain.34Which can best describe Bloch’s idea in the last paragraph?AEvery garden has its weeds.BPut the cart (運(yùn)貨馬車) before the horse.CIt's hard to please all.DPractice makes perfect.35What is the purpose of this text?ATo report the consequence of spinal cord injuries.BTo introduce the findings of a recent research.CTo compare a recent research with other previous researches.DTo recommend a treatment for paralyzed patients. Art is all around us.
