Architecture is amazing. It has changed the way I lk and interact with the wrld and my envirnment. It has trained me t be hyper-sensitive t the built envirnment, t recgnize prblems and find slutins that an untrained eye wuld never ntice.
As much as I lve this prfessin, it is very easy t get lst in architecture. I get s fcused that I have frgtten abut everything else. Luckily my passin fr cycling kept me sane (清醒的) while I was becming an architect. I faced a lt f bstacles and challenges taking a bicycle ride acrss the United States. Lking back, cycling acrss the America was actually ne f the smartest things I ever did.
I have actually bicycled acrss the cntinental USA twice. East t west, Atlantic Ocean t Pacific Ocean, bth times. Bicycling acrss America isn’t as hard as yu think.
I rde alne n my first trip in 2005 frm Virginia Beach t the cast f Flrence, Oregn. In the end it was 4, 547 miles ver the curse f 77 days.
I left fr the secnd trip in 2007 with my tw best friends frm Bar Harbr, Maine t Prtland, Oregn, which was a 4,886 mile ride ver 90 days. At that time, I fell in lve with the idea f leaving the east cast behind, starting a whle new life and career in a new city. I ended up in Prtland. After arriving in twn n a bike, I eventually fund a jb, a place t live and an amazing dg.
I share all this nt t cnvince anyne t g biking acrss America, but nly t share hw ding this has changed my life. Architecture has given me a wnderful life and career but it isn’t everything. Thankfully I have als been very passinate abut: my friends, traveling, bicycles, punk rck, technlgy, the Internet, my dg, and even yga. My architecture backgrund has definitely sweetened my relatinship with all thse things.
Becming an architect is a nble pursuit, but yu shuld keep pursuing everything else that yu are passinate abut. It will enhance yur architecture career and ultimately make yu a mre interesting persn, which in my pinin is really mre imprtant than being anther silly architect.

B. They shwed the benefits f riding with friends.
C. They gave him sme extrardinary experiences.
D. They guaranteed him a new life and career in Prtland.
26. What can be inferred frm Paragraph 6?
A. Dn’t get cmpletely lst in yur hbbies.
B. Dn’t abandn hbbies fr yur prfessin.
C. Dn’t feel ashamed f stpping yur hbbies.
D. Dn’t weigh yur family against yur prfessin.
27. In the last paragraph, the authr reminds us t ________.
A. take up the pursuit f becming an architect
B. find what we are really passinate abut
C. appreciate ther peple’s gd intentins
D. avid ur career taking ver ther pursuits

If yu are a perfectinist, yu are prbably familiar with the feeling f wanting t get everything just right. Yu may struggle with handing in papers, agnize ver prjects at wrk, and even wrry abut small errrs frm the past. High standards are ne thing, but perfectinism is quite anther. And as sme researchers have discvered, pursuing perfectin can have serius cnsequences t bth mental and physical well-being.
Accrding t researchers, perfectinists hld themselves t unrealistically high standards and becme self-critical if they believe they haven’t met these standards. Perfectinists are als likely t feel guilt and shame if they experience failures, which ften leads them t avid situatins where they are wrried they might fail.
In ne study, researchers lked at a ttal f 284 studies (with ver 57,000 participants) and fund that perfectinism was assciated with symptms f depressin, anxiety, bsessive-cmpulsive disrder, and eating disrders. They als fund that peple higher in perfectinism (i.e. participants wh mre strngly identified with perfectinist traits) als reprted higher levels f verall psychlgical distress.
In an article published in 2016, researchers lked at hw perfectinism and depressin were related ver time. They fund that peple higher in perfectinism tended t have increases in depressin symptms, which suggests that perfectinism may be a risk factr fr develping depressin. In ther wrds, althugh peple may think f their perfectinism as smething that helps them succeed, it appears that their perfectinism may actually be harmful fr their mental health.
Since perfectinism is assciated with negative utcmes, what can smene with perfectinist tendencies d t change their behavir? Althugh peple are smetimes hesitant t give up their perfectinist tendencies, psychlgists pint ut that giving up n perfectin desn’t mean being less successful. In fact, because mistakes are an imprtant part f learning and grwing, embracing imperfectin can actually help us in the lng run.
28. Why des the authr describe the scene in the first paragraph?
A. T intrduce the tpic.
B. T prvide examples.
C. T supprt the authr’s argument.
D. T define a cncept.
29. Wh can be defined as a perfectinist?
A. A persn wh is determined t achieve high gals.
B. A persn wh tends t feel srry fr what he has dne.
C. A persn wh blames himself fr nt being that successful.
D. A persn wh hlds high standards fr themselves.
30. Hw can perfectinism be harmful?
A. It may lwer ne’s mental health.
B. It reflects ne’s psychlgical level.
C. It results in depressin immediately.
D. It stps ne frm recvering frm depressin.
31. What will be discussed in the fllwing paragraph?
A. A call fr nt being a perfectinist.
B. Anther side-effect f perfectinism.
C. Why perfectinism is harmful.
D. Hw t avid perfectinism.

Suppse there are sme cins n the table in frnt f yu. If the number is small, yu can tell right away exactly hw many there are. Yu dn’t even have t cunt them – a single glance is enugh. Cichlids and stingrays, tw kinds f fish, are astnishingly similar t us in this respect: they can detect small quantities precisely – and presumably withut cunting. Fr example, they can be trained t reliably distinguish quantities f three frm quantities f fur.
But hw d yu ask a cichlid fr the result f “2+1” r “5-1”? The researchers shwed the fish a cllectin f gemetric shapes – fr example, fur squares. If these bjects were clred blue, this meant “add ne” fr the fllwing discriminatin. Yellw, n the ther hand, meant “subtract ne.”
After shwing the riginal stimulus (刺激物) (e.g. fur squares), the animals were shwn tw new pictures – ne with five and ne with three squares. If they swam t the crrect picture (i.e. t the five squares in the “blue” arithmetic task), they were rewarded with fd. If they gave the wrng answer, they went away empty-handed. Over time, they learned t assciate the blue clr with an increase f ne in the amunt shwn at the beginning, and the yellw number with a decrease.
“We deliberately left ut sme calculatins during training,” Schluessel explains. “Namely, 3+1 and 3-1.” After the learning phase, the animals gt t see these tw tasks fr the first time. But even in thse tests, they significantly ften chse the crrect answer.” This was true even when they had t decide between chsing fur r five bjects after being shwn a blue 3 – that is, tw utcmes that were bth greater than the initial value. In this case, the fish chse fur ver five, indicating they had nt learned the rule “chse the largest (r smallest) amunt presented” but the rule “always add r subtract ne”.
32. Hw did the researchers tell the fish what t d?
A. They used different clrs t represent different calculatins.
B. They shwed different numbers by varius shapes.
C. They asked the fish fr the result after shwing gemetric shapes.
D. They assciated gemetric shapes with clrs.
33. What did the researchers intend t teach the fish in the training?
A. They can get fd when swimming t the crrect picture.
B. Blue means “add ne,” and yellw means “subtract ne”.
C. Math plays an imprtant rle in ne’s life.
D. Five squares in the blue means fd.
34. Why did the researchers left ut sme calculatins during the training?
A. T prve that the fish finish the task by memrizing numbers.
B. T indicate the fish can d cmplicated tasks.
C. T shw an imprtant rule the fish had nt learned.
D. T check whether the fish can apply this knwledge t new tasks.
35. What is the majr finding f the research?
A. Sme fish can perfrm math tasks by memry.
B. Cichlids and stingrays have simple math abilities.
C. All fish are smarter than we used t think.
D. Scientific training is the key t math.
