The 3. 5 millin Americans wh play pickleball are abut ne-tenth the number wh play glf and ne-fifth the number wh play tennis. Yet there are reasns t bet n the sprt's spread. Like many utdr activities, pickleball is scial, but it is easier t learn than tennis and faster and less expensive than glf. Cuntry clubs and recreatin centers are changing sme f their tennis curts int pickleball curts t meet demand. The mre places there are t play, the mre players will try the sprt.
Hping t predict where the ball is ging t land, prducers f tennis racquets (球拍) are starting t make pickleball kit t. "Pickleball is viewed as an pprtunity, " says Stu Upsn f USA Pickleball, the sprt's natinal gverning bdy. As mre peple take up the sprt, demand fr televised matches and spnsrships will increase. The term "scial distancing" has been at the center f public cnversatin fr a while. But it's nt "scial" distance we are trying t prmte. It's physical separatin. In fact, preserving scial ties - even at a distance - is essential fr bth mental and physical health. The results f an analytic review dne in 2017 indicate that a lack f scial supprt is n a par with (與…不相上下) smking cigarettes as a risk factr fr health.
Given this fact, hw might we best stay cnnected t thers while maintaining physical distance? Wuld we be better ff e-mailing a friend? Making a phne call? Setting up a vide chat? In ur study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media thrugh which peple interact affects their sense f cnnectin and hw expectatins abut certain technlgies impact the cmmunicatin media they chse t use.
In ur experiment, we asked participants t recnnect with smene that they hadn't interacted with recently, either thrugh e-mail r ver the phne. Participants first made predictins abut what it wuld be like t get in tuch if they reached ut in these tw ways. They generally believed that they'd feel mre cnnected when interacting via (通過) the phne than ver e-mail. But they als predicted that talking n the phne culd be mre uncmfrtable than sending an e-mail. Althugh these participants believed that talking encuraged strnger bnds, mst f them said they'd rather send an e-mail than call the persn up. Fears abut awkwardness, it seems, push individuals tward text-based methds fr cmmunicating.
In the next part f the experiment, we had participants actually recnnect using ne randmly determined mde f cmmunicatin and then fllwed up with them after they had dne s. We fund that peple d frm meaningfully strnger bnds when interacting ver the phne than ver e-mail. Imprtantly, thugh, there was n difference in the amunt f discmfrt when recnnecting n the phne.
The next time yu think abut hw best t cnnect, cnsider calling r setting up a vide chat. Feelings f scial cnnectin are preferably facilitated by vice rather than a keybard.

A. By stating a deep-rted traditin.
B. By citing a published reprt.
C. By sharing public pinins.
D. By presenting fficial dcuments.
33. What did the authr and Epley's study fcus n?
A. Hw technlgies impact means f cmmunicatin.
B. Hw scial media chices affect feelings f cnnectin.
C. Why maintaining scial separatin is bad fr mental health.
D. Why recnnecting with friends ver the phne brings awkwardness.
34. What can we infer frm the study results?
A. They changed the research bjectives.
B. They prvided insights fr future studies.
C. They cnfirmed researchers' expectatins.
D. They cntradicted participants' predictins partly.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Fr strnger bnds, talk instead f typing
B. Keeping in tuch is key t a lasting friendship
C. Think befre yu cnsider cntacting an ld friend
D. Text-based methds fr cmmunicatin cause discmfrt
