BKimberly Arcand, a visualization scientist for NASA, has made it her life's work to help tell the stories of space. Having authored several astrophysics 天體物理學(xué) nonfiction books over the years, Arcand recently turned her attention to children's books. She released Goodnight Exomoon last year, an astronomical parody 天文的模仿作品, which takes the classic children's book Goodnight Moon and explores planetary science in a way that is readable for the very young. The idea, Arcand says, was born when her own children refused to sleep. I would read for hours to try to get them to go to sleep and they loved Goodnight Moon. One day I could not imagine reading Goodnight Moon again so I started creating stories based on it, says Arcand. She wrote down one of the versions of her playful parody, and then put it in a drawer where it stayed for nearly a decade. Then, in 2018, scientists found what they believed was the first exomoon 系外衛(wèi)星 orbiting the exoplanet known as Kepler-1625b. With that first exomoon candidate, it reminded me that I had written the story, says Arcand. So, the scientist pulled her would-be book out of the drawer and brought it to life. In the great telescope room there was a telephone, an atmospheric balloon, and a picture of a satellite flying by the moon begins the story, setting readers in a room that houses a huge telescope. The story goes on to introduce children to some of the more modern tools that astronomers use, like accelerometers, micrometers and satellites, teaching them about astronomical objects like comets and exomoons. Arcand hopes the book will excite space fans, and that it will inspire children and especially young girls to see the field of science as one that is approachable. This desire drives Arcand's scientific work, as well. When not penning parodies, Arcand spends her time making complex concepts and theories more accessible to a variety of audiences, from fellow researchers to students and the general public. 24. What do we know about Goodnight Exomoon?A. It is a classic astrophysics nonfiction book. B. It is a continuation of Goodnight Moon. C. It is accessible to young readers. D. It is produced by NASA. 25. What motivated Arcand to write Goodnight Exomoon?A. The discovery of Kepler-1625b. B. The lack of science books for children. C. Her great love for the book Goodnight Moon. D. Her experience of reading bedtime stories to her kids. 26. What can readers learn from Goodnight Exomoon?A. History of moon exploration. B. Tools for space exploration. C. Stories of famous astronauts. D. Possibilities for space travel. 27. What does Arcand devote herself to doing?A. Spreading knowledge of space. B. Giving training to female scientists. C. Inspiring more researchers to pen books. D. Recommending more books to space fans. CIn 1965 three fathers in Washington State faced a problem familiar to many parents in 2022: how to keep their restless children entertained. They threw together wooden paddles (乒乓球拍), a badminton net, and a perforated (有孔的) plastic ball. The sport "pickleball" was born, getting its name - according to one story - from a dog named Pickle, who kept running away with the ball. Today pickleball, which is a mix of tennis, badminton and ping pong, is the fastest-growing sport in America. In the five years to the end of 2019, pickleball participation grew by more than 7%, while Americans' overall activity level stayed flat. Now, the sport has picked up more swing thanks to COVID 19. Last March, when gyms closed, portable 便攜的 pickleball nets temporarily sold out. "It's a trend. " says Derek Heil, an employee at Dick's Sporting Goods in Dallas, who has seen a sales spike for pickleball equipment over the last year. Players set up courts, which are half the size of tennis courts, in driveways. The 3. 5 million Americans who play pickleball are about one-tenth the number who play golf and one-fifth the number who play tennis. Yet there are reasons to bet on the sport's spread. Like many outdoor activities, pickleball is social, but it is easier to learn than tennis and faster and less expensive than golf. Country clubs and recreation centers are changing some of their tennis courts into pickleball courts to meet demand. The more places there are to play, the more players will try the sport. Hoping to predict where the ball is going to land, producers of tennis racquets (球拍) are starting to make pickleball kit too. "Pickleball is viewed as an opportunity, " says Stu Upson of USA Pickleball, the sport's national governing body. As more people take up the sport, demand for televised matches and sponsorships will increase. Mr. Upson expects that one day pickleball will become an Olympic sport, although that may be a long shot. 28. What can we say about the sport pickleball?A. It was named after a restless child. B. It was used to entertain dogs. C. It was invented by accident. D. It was seen as a threat to tennis. 29. What does the underlined word "spike" in paragraph 2 mean?A. Technique.   B. Increase.   C. Target.  D. Cycle.30. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Pickleball has achieved its dominance in sports market in America. B. Playing pickleball was the most popular sport in the US during the quarantine. C. American's participation in sports except pickleball decreased from 2015-2019. D. Pickleball is the first choice for people to socialize. 31. What's the passage mainly about?A. Great popularity of pickleball in America. B. The development of pickleball in America. C. The influence of pickleball on people's lives. D. The future of pickleball in the Olympics.  DThe term "social distancing" has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it's not "social" distance we are trying to promote. It's physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties - even at a distance - is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review done in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with 不相上下 smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health. Given this fact, how might we best stay connected to others while maintaining physical distance? Would we be better off e-mailing a friend? Making a phone call? Setting up a video chat? In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact affects their sense of connection and how expectations about certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use. In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn't interacted with recently, either through e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they reached out in these two ways. They generally believed that they'd feel more connected when interacting via 通過 the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they'd rather send an e-mail than call the person up. Fears about awkwardness, it seems, push individuals toward text-based methods for communicating. In the next part of the experiment, we had participants actually reconnect using one randomly determined mode of communication and then followed up with them after they had done so. We found that people do form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone. The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or setting up a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard. 32. How does the author support his view on the importance of maintaining social ties? A. By stating a deep-rooted tradition. B. By citing a published report. C. By sharing public opinions. D. By presenting official documents. 33. What did the author and Epley's study focus on?A. How technologies impact means of communication. B. How social media choices affect feelings of connection. C. Why maintaining social separation is bad for mental health. D. Why reconnecting with friends over the phone brings awkwardness. 34. What can we infer from the study results?A. They changed the research objectives. B. They provided insights for future studies. C. They confirmed researchers' expectations. D. They contradicted participants' predictions partly. 35. What is the best title for the text?A. For stronger bonds, talk instead of typingB. Keeping in touch is key to a lasting friendshipC. Think before you consider contacting an old friendD. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did. Her desk mate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids' group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti 意大利面. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!Catherine didn't really like it when the kids chanted Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular. One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lived on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he kept chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!What's the matter with it?She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. They have a pecking order, he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies. Oh, what a poor little thing!Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being peckedby her classmates. I'm going to take it home and take good care of it, she said with a determined look. Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. It's looking healthy, she said proudly. It's fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and. . . Everyone was entertained by Catherine's story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom. 注意: 1. 續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右: 2. 請按如下格式在答題卡的相應(yīng)位置作答。Then Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner.
