Dutch researchers have discvered that birds living in cities are using metal spikes (尖刺) t. build their nests. Peple put these spikes n buildings in rder t keep birds ff their balcnies, benches, and chimneys, but birds seem t be stealing them and using them t keep peple away frm their eggs.
The research began when, in the curtyard f a hspital in Antwerp, Belgium, bilgist AukeFlrian Hiemstra fund a large nest that had been built by a magpie (喜鵲). The nest was made frm abut 1, 500 metal spikes. They were pinting utward t create a prtective system arund the nest.
"I just stared at it, this strange, beautiful, weird nest, "Hiemstra tld BBC News. When he investigated further, he fund that magpies had mved away nearly 165 feet f metal spikes that had been glued t the hspital's rf.
After Hiemstra made this discvery, his team heard abut a similar nest created by crws in Rtterdam, in the Netherlands, and anther magpie nest in Glasgw, Sctland. The crws had psitined the spikes in a different way, perhaps using the metal t supprt the nest's structure.
In their reprt, the researchers mentin many kinds f birds mving spikes ff buildings, but they chse t fcus their study n crvids (birds frm the crw family). The researchers pinted ut that there have been previus studies n hw crvids use everything frm telephne wires t clthes hangers t build their nests. They said the use f anti-bird spikes "hints at a functinal use"-meaning the birds seem t knw exactly what they're ding.
Magpies have ften been seen nesting in thrny (多刺的) places, where the thrns can prevent peple frm attacking the small eggs and chicks inside the nest. Thrny hedges aren't cmmn in cities, hwever, s the thery is that magpies use the human-made versin instead. Hiemstra calls this the birds' "revenge". "We're trying t get rid f birds, but the birds are cllecting ur metal spikes and actually making mre birds in these nests, "he said.

There was a pint in time when the slar industry was cnsidered dead mney. It was t expensive, t inefficient, and t incnsistent t be a viable (切實可行的) alternative energy surce fr really anything, let alne yur hme r ffice.

Slar energy csts have drpped mre than 70% ver the past 10 years, and are nw cheaper than fssil fuels in mst parts f the United States. Better yet, the drivers f these cst declines-ecnmies f scale (規(guī)模經(jīng)濟) and technlgical imprvements - are durable (耐久的), and therefre, slar is nly ging t get even cheaper. Indeed, these frces are s pwerful in the slar industry that they have their wn law - Swansn's Law - which states that the price f slar mdules (模塊) decreases by abut 20% fr every dubling in glbal slar capacity.
Meanwhile, slar panels have becme very efficient at transfrming light frm the sun int usable energy. Back in 1992, researchers at the University f Suth Flrida made a thin-film slar cell with 15. 9% efficiency-and that was cnsidered a breakthrugh at the time.
These days, thugh, yur average silicn slar cells' efficiency rate is arund 20%. That's standard. And sme research effrts have even managed t achieve near 50% efficiency in certain lab tests.
At the same time, these slar systems have becme dramatically mre cnsistent. One f the biggest hurdles fr slar in the early 2000s was its intermittency-the sun desn't shine every day, s what d yu d when its cludy?
Well, that's why the clean energy industry has develped energy strage slutins, which are basically just big batteries that hmewners and ffice building managers can install n-site and link t their 'slar panels t stre excess (過度的) slar pwer n super sunny days, and use that pwer n cludy days.
Cheapest. Mst efficient. Mst cnsistent. That's a pwerful cmbinatin. N wnder slar industry has accunted fr 58% f all new energy capacity additins s far in 2021 and is nly ging t get strnger and mre active ver the next 10 years-t a pint where, by 2030, I wuldn't be surprised t see slar industry accunting fr 90%+ f all new energy capacity additins.
32. Which f the fllwing is clsely related t slar energy csts accrding t the Swansn's Law?
A. Technlgical imprvements. B. The efficiency.
C. Ecnmic grwth. D. The capacity.
33. Why have the energy strage slutins been develped?
A. T lwer the slar panel csts. B. T ensure cnsistent pwer supply.
C. T reduce slar energy waste. D. T generate electricity n cludy days.
34. What is the authr's attitude twards the future f the slar industry?
A. Dubtful. B. Cnfident. C. Uncaring. D. Disapprving.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. What Advantages the Slar Energy Has?
B. Hw We Humans Can Fully Use the Slar energy?
C. Why the Slar Industry Is the Future f Earth's Energy?
D. When the Slar Industry Will Becme Our New Energy Capacity Additins?
